1 SCHOOL OF COMPUTING & MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES Network and Computer Systems Security MSc Greenwich Campus
2 Why study this programme? This programme is designed for graduates with a good first degree in computer science, information systems or other computingrelated subject, with some knowledge of computer networks studied at undergraduate level. It is suitable for both new graduates wishing to specialise in computer security and IT professionals who wish to further their skills and move into this area. Students will gain an understanding of the threats to networks, information systems and servers. They will learn to administer and manage critical distributed-applications and configure relevant security options. They will be exposed to industry-standard software and hardware systems for security management. Graduates will, therefore, be able to contribute quickly to the well-being of corporate IT and informational assets. There will be hands-on training in current industry standard tools for implementing security, including access control, authentication, encryption, key management and other aspects. Why study with us? The School of Computing & Mathematical Sciences offers an exciting, diverse and innovative portfolio of programmes. These are designed in close collaboration with industry and informed by worldclass research and enterprise, leading to great jobs in industry both in the UK and internationally. The Sunday Times University Guide has ranked our computer sciences and mathematical sciences subjects in the national top 10 for teaching excellence with the two subject areas rated 7th and 4th respectively. In the Guardian 2012 University Guide, mathematics at Greenwich was rated 12th in the country and second in London. The School consistently performs well in the National Student Survey, regularly achieving up to 100% student satisfaction in computing and mathematics subjects. We are recognised nationally and internationally for our cutting-edge research and innovative approach to curriculum development. In fact, we are one of the first universities in the country to use Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, which provides our students with remote access to our resources. We have pioneered programmes in computing, information systems, digital and multimedia technology, interactive multimedia games, networking, Internet and web technologies, data mining, mathematics, statistics, decision science and computational science and engineering. Our students study on the university s Greenwich Campus, which is part of the Old Royal Naval College and on the banks of the River Thames. The university s largest campus, it is centred on three baroque buildings, designed by Sir Christopher Wren at the end of the 17th century. The
3 surrounding town is a mix of markets, shops, restaurants and pubs, as well as some of the most famous museums and tourist attractions in the country. By train, central London is only a few minutes away. What will you study? Content On this programme students: Demonstrate an understanding of network management issues and standards. They will also learn about the capabilities and benefits of automated network management Understand the installation costs and runtime overheads of network management Demonstrate a clear understanding of network performance and reliability and be able to relate these aspects to network management (how network management facilitates the achievement of these) Be able to design a network from analysis of user requirements to selection of equipment, configuration and implementation, and be able to relate aspects of the design to network management (ensuring that the design is manageable) Understand routing concepts, strategy, algorithms, and protocols. Students will be able to differentiate between various routing protocols, identifying their features and their relative benefits and drawbacks. They will also be able to configure routers Understand the security needs of networks, users and applications Demonstrate an appreciation of security threats and the need to achieve an appropriate level of security while allowing legitimate access Show an understanding of algorithms and procedures, covering areas such as encryption, keys, digital signatures and certificates, and strengths and weaknesses Show an awareness of the methodologies and software tools typically used by hackers Identify the relevant laws which apply to the security of information systems. Courses Project a substantial individual project on a topic chosen by the student (60 credits) Managing IT Security and Risk Network Security Network Management Operating System and Application Server Security IT Application Security and Control Network and Internet Technologies and Design PLUS Two additional options from: Distributed Data Architecture and Management Enterprise Web Engineering Mobile Technologies Computer Crime and Forensics High Performance Systems Engineering Network Architectures and Services Software Tools and Techniques This is a rapidly changing subject area and course content may change in order to ensure that it is up to date and industrially relevant.
