2 Why study this programme? This new undergraduate degree in mathematics education provides a fast route into teaching in the secondary or further education sectors. Students completing this two-year accelerated degree will be well placed to progress onto a PGCE programme, either at the University of Greenwich or through the School Direct training initiative. You can therefore gain a degree and a teaching qualification in only three years at least one year less study than alternative routes to qualification. The programme contextualises subject knowledge in relation to practice through specific and applied courses. The core subject knowledge is delivered at Greenwich Campus by experts from the university s Department of Mathematical Sciences. The applied courses are delivered at Avery Hill Campus by the Department of Secondary Education, Lifelong Learning Teacher Education & Physical Education and Sport. Why study with us? We offer a broad range of interrelated programmes across a variety of subject specialisms. These are designed for people who wish to develop their teaching capacities and professionalisms to teach older children and young and mature adults. The department exemplifies the very best practice in teaching and learning through interactive lectures and seminars, electronic media, peer learning, tutorials and a wide variety of resources.
3 Our programmes of initial teacher education enable students to become professional, creative and reflective educators. We prepare our students to enter the teaching profession with enthusiasm and confidence. They are able to inspire, challenge and motivate their learners and to develop their own professional identity. The department is located on our Avery Hill Campus, which is set in pleasant parkland in south-east London. Avery Hill has convenient transport links to our other campuses and to Kent and central London. 4 Key facts UCAS code: G11X A BA/MathEd Attendance: 2 years full-time Entry requirements: You should have: 300 UCAS points, of which 80 points must be from A-level mathematics. PLUS GCSEs at grade C or above in English and mathematics, or equivalent qualifications. If you were educated in a language other than English and/or in a country where English speakers are in a minority, you should have a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill) or an equivalent rating in another Secure English Language Test. 5 Career opportunities Graduates completing this two-year accelerated degree will be well placed to progress onto a PGCE programme, either at the University of Greenwich or through the School Direct training initiative. Graduates may also pursue careers as academic or industrial researchers and most industries are actively seeking graduates who have intellectual, mathematical and numerical skills that they can apply in a wide range of practical situations.
