1 SCHOOL OF COMPUTING & MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES Internet Technology and E-Commerce PGDip/MSc Greenwich Campus
2 Why study this programme? An advanced programme of study involving; distributed programming; software technologies and architectures; e-commerce concepts and strategies for building Internet enabled e-commerce systems. The main tasks facing industry at the moment involve the development of new Internet enabled systems, the integration of legacy systems into intranets or extranets, and advanced Internet publishing. There is a pressing need for people with skills in designing, building and maintaining such systems. These skills should be accompanied by an appreciation of the business context and market forces behind the new technologies. This programme educates graduates in the applications necessary for the deployment of distributed computing systems over the Internet. Why study with us? The School of Computing & Mathematical Sciences offers an exciting, diverse and state-of-the-art portfolio of programmes. These are designed in close collaboration with industry and informed by our world- class research and enterprise, leading to great jobs in industry both locally in the UK and internationally. In the 2008 National Student Survey our performance was outstanding with over 90 per cent of our students expressing the highest levels of satisfaction with the education and support they received. We are recognised nationally and internationally for our cutting-edge research and innovative approach to curriculum development. Our portfolio of programmes explores subjects as diverse as film production, digital animation, robotics and e-business. We have a wide range relevant and exciting programmes in leadingedge technologies, such as digital media, embedded systems, games development, forensics and security, data mining and data warehousing. We also cover more traditional areas, such as computer science, networking and mathematics. Our students study on the university s Greenwich Campus, which is part of the Old Royal Naval College and on the banks of the River Thames. The university s largest campus, it is centred on three baroque buildings, designed by Sir Christopher Wren at the end of the 17th century.
3 The surrounding town is a mix of markets, shops, restaurants and pubs, as well as some of the most famous museums and tourist attractions in the country. By train, central London is only a few minutes away. What will you study? Content On this programme students will: Design and implement non-trivial web based applications using appropriate Java technology such as JSPs, Servlets, Struts and JDBC Critically evaluate architectures and approaches to the design of enterprise applications Acquire an understanding of algorithms and procedures: encryption, keys, digital signatures and certifi cates and their strengths and weaknesses Develop an awareness of the methodologies and software tools typically used by hackers Judiciously evaluate and select, design, implement and various types of interfaces to databases using modern tools appropriate for the task Be competent in the evaluation and selection of software tools and APIs for mobile applications and be aware of their scope and limitations Confi gure routers for network management (specifi cally includes setting up the SNMP agent) Create W3C standard and WAI guideline compliant websites Use and evaluate a diversity of serverside technologies for building multi-server and multi-tier web applications Critically appraise the social, legal, ethical and professional issues related to building modern enterprise software systems Critically evaluate and apply modern modelling techniques and methods to the whole life cycle of real enterprise software systems Administer web server and application server operation Design and implement stored database programming components. Courses E-Business Applications (15 credits) Network Security (15 credits) Web Engineering (15 credits) Enterprise Patterns and Frameworks (15 credits) Programming Enterprise Components (15 credits) Project (60 credits) Three options from: Distributed Data Management Technology (15); Distributed Data Architecture and Management (15); Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery in Databases (15); Mobile Application Development (15); Network Management (15); Data Warehousing (15); Enterprise Web Engineering (15); Software Engineering Management (15); Enterprise Software Engineering Development (15); Operating System and Application Server Security (15); High Performance Systems Engineering (15); High Performance Distributed Memory Systems (15); Computer Security and Risk Analysis (15); Network and Internet Technologies and Design (15); 3D Computer Graphics (15); Business Intelligence (15); Network Architectures and Services (15) (45 credits) This is a rapidly changing subject area and course content may change in order to ensure that it is up to date and industrially relevant.
4 Key facts Attendance: 1 year full-time, 2 years part-time starting in September or January. Entry requirements: Candidates should have a good honours degree in computer science or a related discipline. Ideally students should have a good working knowledge of programming in Java although C+ is also acceptable. How to apply: Applications should be made on a university application form. This is available from the Enquiry Unit or International Offi ce or can be downloaded from apply. There is no closing date for applications to postgraduate programmes, but many fi ll up quickly, so applicants are advised to apply early.
