2 Why study this programme? This programme is designed for people with an interest in education as an academic subject. The programme provides a broadbased platform for the study of key aspects of education, particularly current concepts, practices and issues. The programme focuses on the nature of learning, human development and the socioeconomic, historical, cultural and political contexts of educational institutions and of the wider society in which learning takes place. It is also concerned with the differing approaches to knowledge and curricula within institutions and with educational processes. This involves debate about the aims of education and the conflicting theories from which educational practices are drawn. One of the unique features of this programme will be the opportunity to study social enterprise, a rapidly growing sector that is increasingly important in working with children and young people. In Year 1 you will learn the basics of social enterprise before planning your own or investigate an existing one in Year 2. If you want to build your own social enterprise in Year 3 we will support you, if not, we will provide a placement, in a relevant setting, to further build your employability skills. Although the programme does not lead to Qualified Teacher Status, many students go on to become teachers by taking an

3 Initial Teacher Training qualification. If you wish to pursue a career in primary teaching after graduating, you will need to follow this degree with a PGCE Primary or School Direct programme. BA Hons Education Studies is not suitable if you wish to pursue a PGCE Secondary programme, as applicants normally require a degree in the subject they eventually want to teach, e.g. science. Why study with us? The Department of Education & Community Studies, part of the Faculty of Education & Health, offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes for those interested in careers in education, childcare, youth work and the wider public sector. Many members of the department are internationally recognised leaders in their field and have published in highly regarded academic and practitioner journals. The department is home to two research centres: the Centre for the Study of Play & Recreation and the Centre for Natural Learning & Environments. We also have close links with professional bodies such as Play England and the National Youth Agency as well as with partner colleges and the wider community through joint programmes and work placements. The department is located on our Avery Hill Campus, which is set in pleasant parkland in south-east London. Avery Hill has convenient transport links to our other campuses and to Kent and central London. The Students Union University of Greenwich ( organises a variety of sports and social activities on campus. What will you study? You will have opportunities throughout the programme to specialise in areas of particular interest, such as the curriculum, education in the early years, vocational education, educational policy and management, and community and intercultural education. Teaching and assessment The programme is currently assessed almost entirely by continuous assessment of coursework.
