About us

About us Coleraine 96.4FM TRANSMISSION AREA Londonderry 102.4FM Ballymena 102.3FM Larne 97.1FM Belfast 1026AM Enniskillen 96.6FM Newry 103.1FM Newcastle 103.4FM Downtown Radio DAB Digital Northern Ireland s first commercial station, Downtown Radio began broadcasting on 16th March 1976, coincidentally the same day as Prime Minister Harold Wilson resigned. The station had a mini coup, breaking the news over an hour before BBC Radio Ulster and has continued to be an important source of news ever since. The station is the only province-wide commercial station broadcasting adult contemporary music to the over 35 s, using a network of FM and AM transmitters. Downtown Radio is at the heart of broadcasting in Northern Ireland, with many of its presenters being household names. Downtown Radio is one of the few Independent Local Radio stations that continues to cater for specialist music tastes such as gospel and jazz. Listening figures for Downtown s country music programmes are amongst the station s highest.

About us TRANSMISSION AREA Ballymena Larne Carrickfergus Belfast Bangor Lisburn Newtownards Portadown Armagh Banbridge Downpatrick Cool FM Newry 97.4FM /DAB Digital Launched on 7th February 1990, after its sister station Downtown Radio split its AM and FM frequencies in the Greater Belfast area. It created a brand new sound for a youth orientated market. Cool FM quickly became Northern Ireland s largest commercial station, targeting the much sought after 18 35 age demographic with a hit music format. Transmitting from the mast on top of Black Mountain just a few miles to the west of Belfast, Cool FM covers all the major towns in the east of the province (approximately 68% of the Northern Ireland population).

Why Radio?

Why Radio? 7 Reasons to use radio 1. Radio talks to people at the right time and place with the lowest cost per thousand Radio works in real time so ads can be targeted at key touchpoint times e.g. on the school run, thereby reaching people at the time they are most ready to be influenced by the message. 2. Radio is a friend Listeners typically describe their favourite radio station as a friend, a valuable context for an advertiser to appear in. The effect is particularly enhanced for sponsorship and promotions. 3. Radio reaches out in an avoidance world Research shows that radio has one of the lowest levels of ad avoidance. People rarely switch stations and are available to listen to any message that is relevant, creative or intriguing. Radio is an ideal medium for reaching out to new customers. 4. Radio has a multiplier effect on other media. Radio s way of multiplying the effect of other media has been thoroughly researched. Studies show that in combination with television, outdoor or press, radio can substantially enhance campaign recall as well as increasing coverage and frequency. 5. Radio creates a large share of mind for a brand Radio can create a sense of ubiquity for a brand because of the following reasons: Radio is a cost effective medium enabling ads to be broadcast more frequently. Radio audiences engage with the medium for long periods of time. 6. Radio builds long term brand dominance Small businesses can become bigger businesses by using radio as their primary medium. Radio provides higher frequency and lower levels of ad avoidance, so the advertiser has more opportunity to be speaking to the listener at the critical time when they are making a purchase decision. 7. Radio is the most flexible medium Business conditions can change fast. Production of commercials is quick and relatively low cost.
