Dementia Capable Care Two-Day Dementia Therapy Intermediate Course This course is designed for Occupational Therapists/ COTAs, Speech Language Pathologists, and Physical Therapists/PTAs who have some experience using the Cognitive Disabilities Model (CDM), Allen Levels, and assessments in geriatric practice. The program provides more in-depth training on the CDM, the Allen Levels, the ACLS (leather lacing), and Allen Diagnostic Module (ADM) assessments. Participants continue to develop their understanding of how to use the CDM, person-centered care, and the Theory of Retrogenesis for successful assessment, treatment, and documentation of clients with Alzheimer s/dementia. There is teaching emphasis on understanding the complex client with dementia, including those with psychiatric illness and other common comorbidities. Participants learn to use a clinical reasoning framework, based on the CDM and the other theoretical underpinnings, for effective, reimbursable intervention. Through application of this clinical reasoning framework to multiple challenging case studies, participants further develop their assessment and treatment aptitude, while building their skills and confidence to provide therapy services to those with Alzheimer s/dementia. What Therapists Will Learn Understand how to use the Allen model to accurately identify a person s Allen Cognitive Level and to apply the Allen level to reimbursable goals and treatment approaches addressing deficits in ADLs, mobility, leisure activity, cognition, communication, and/or swallowing. Identify how psychiatric illness impacts function and cognition. Establish treatment plans to reduce behavioral outbursts and improve function and safety. Understand how to use the Allen model and clinical reasoning skills to assess and treat persons with dementia who experience psychiatric and other common comorbid conditions. Discuss methods to integrate the Allen Cognitive Level assessment and treatment methods into various clinical settings. Identify key documentation elements for reimbursement. This course helps you meet the requirements necessary to achieve recognition as a Dementia Capable Care Therapist. Visit crisisprevention.com/dcct for more information. 3
