4 A Message From Your Seminar Leader, Emily Dassow, OTR/L Dear Colleague: Bureau of Education & Research th Avenue SE PO Box Bellevue, WA Phone (800) Fax (425) School based Occupational Therapy services are in HIGH demand and on the rise! The secret is out, and our profession is becoming more frequently recognized as a valuable asset to students learning. As the word continues to spread, we will find ourselves serving more and more students and teachers. We have the opportunity to work with kids of all ages and with a wide range of abilities, but this range of students can make our job a challenge. Our profession is a necessary commodity to many children in the country, so let s band together and strive for an effective therapeutic alliance with the educational system. Curriculum and educational standards are changing at a fast pace all over the country. We need to keep abreast of the evolving expectations being placed on our students and teachers so we can best support them. What impact does the Common Core State Standards have on our work with students and teachers? What standards are most applicable to our OT sessions? How can we best utilize our skills to help each student we serve meet and exceed the Common Core State Standards? If you are seeking answers to these timely questions, this is a seminar you won t want to miss! I have designed this day to help school based Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants find the answers they seek around the Common Core State Standards. During our day together, we will learn and define what exactly the Common Core State Standards are and how we can apply our expertise to helping students achieve them. We will also talk about and share treatment ideas that address fine motor, visual motor, visual processing, praxis and sensory processing, and modulation. Along with treatment ideas, we will explore how to incorporate the Common Core State Standards into writing goals for IEP documents. I have designed this day to help school based Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants find the answers they seek around the Common Core State Standards. Our caseloads are filled to the brim, and it seems there just are never enough hours in the day to get all of our work done. I d like to share some practical and effective ways of making every minute of therapy count, and I hope that you ll want to share some of your ideas with the rest of us! It is a team effort to help our students achieve success; let s discover effective ways of being relevant IEP team members! Warmly, Emily Dassow, OTR/L P.S. All the practical ideas and strategies are included in the resource handbook that each participant will receive. I have designed this day with you in mind and will focus our time and energy on the core standards that are most applicable to our work as school based Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants. 4
