3 2 Brisbane State High School Senior Course Guide ACCOUNTING Unit 1 Year 10 Preparatory Studies Prerequisite Nil This subject will introduce students to the practical application of business financial records. The subject focuses on preparation and interpretation of financial reports, business documents and book keeping principles. Accounting Fundamentals and Transaction Analysis The Accounting Process and Double Entry System Preparation of Financial Reports and Ratios includes in class assignment and class test. Readiness for Senior Year 10 Accounting provides an opportunity for students to gain an understanding of the fundamentals of accounting required for success in senior accounting. ACCOUNTING Unit 2 Year 10 Preparatory Studies (Semester 2 only) Prerequisite Accounting Unit 1 This subject further develops students understanding and application of accounting concepts and principles previously undertaken in Accounting 101. Students will undertake computerised accounting as well as developing their skills in evaluating financial reports Computerised Accounting Package Spread sheets and Accounting In class computerised assignment, class test. Readiness for Senior Year 10 Accounting (unit 2) provides an opportunity for students to gain an understanding computerised accounting in preparation for senior Accounting.

Students will be encouraged to be reflective thinkers within a business environment. Marketing Finance Operations Human Resource includes tests, extended response and non-written presentations. Readiness for Senior Year 10 Business Management provides an opportunity for students to gain an understanding of business operations and the skills required for success in senior accounting. INFORMATION PROCESSING AND TECHNOLOGY Year 10 Preparatory Studies Prerequisite Nil The course will introduce students to the fundamental principles of software development, database design and single page web application. The following programmes will be learnt in this subject: Databases using Access Gamemaker includes practical exercises and projects. Readiness for Senior Year 10 Information Processing and Technology provides an opportunity for students to gain an understanding of the programming skills required for success in senior Legal Studies.
5 4 Brisbane State High School Senior Course Guide YEAR 11 and 12 ACCOUNTING Authority Subject Accounting is an information system which involves the recording, reporting, analysing, and interpreting of financial and other information used for making and evaluating decisions about the allocation of resources. A comprehensive accounting system is central to assisting in the discharge of accountability and to the development and maintenance of the financial control of business organisations. People use accounting information to help evaluate performance, to facilitate decision making and control, and to report on the operation of an organisation from both internal and external perspectives. Students are provided with opportunities to develop skills in managing financial resources that they can apply in the business environment and also on a personal level. They are encouraged to think logically, to apply accounting principles in a consistent and effective manner, and to become independent learners. The most successful students will be those who: are logical thinkers enjoy solving problems show initiative, are self -motivated and communicate effectively Foundation Studies Recording and controls of accounting information Reporting and decision making Accounting packages Elective studies Special Features of the Course Students may participate in the Queensland Accounting Competition Opportunity is given to students in year 12 to complete a first year Accounting subject through QUT or UQ Most business degrees at university require students to study at least one Accounting subject. Having studied Senior Accounting, students are at a decided advantage The criteria in Accounting includes; Knowledge and procedural practices, Interpretation and Applied practical processes. Students are assessed through tests (computerised and manual), research assignments and non-written presentations. In an increasingly dynamic and global society, it is important for young people to make informed and rational decisions about business management. The context of business provides a realistic setting where students understanding of management can be developed as it applies not only to business but also to the student s personal life. Business Management contributes to the development of an enterprising culture in Australia and identifies the contribution that such a culture could make to improving economic and community wellbeing. 7 6 Brisbane State High School Senior Course Guide YEAR 11 and 12 INFORMATION PROCESSING AND TECHNOLOGY Authority Subject IPT is a course of study that provides students with knowledge, skills, processes and understanding of information technology. It emphasises problem identification and solution as well as the use of applications. The most successful students tend to be those who have obtained at least a C in Junior Mathematics and English, have a positive attitude towards learning and who are willing to take a structured approach to problem solving following a design, develop and evaluate cycle. Software and System Engineering This topic involves the study of operating systems and environments, computer system architecture, software design and programming involving the complete software development process from determination of user requirements through analysis, design and implementation to evaluation. Information and Intelligent Systems This topic introduces a formal model to describe the architecture of information systems (databases), presents methods for developing these systems, and allows students to implement these to produce working information. They will also learn about SQL, Expert Systems and Artificial Intelligence. Social and Ethical Issues The aim of this topic is to help students develop an appreciation and understanding of the impact that developments in information technology have on themselves and communities worldwide. Topics include: Privacy and security, legal issues, equity and accessibility and the internet. Human-Computer Interaction The aim of this topic is to help students develop an appreciation of how an interface (screen design) presented to us in a program can greatly affect how well we can interact and use the program. Special Features of the Course As a result, the study of this subject will contribute in a significant way to the general education of students, whether or not they intend proceeding to employment specific to information technology. Knowledge and application Analysis and synthesis Evaluation and communication formal examinations at the end of each semester writing tasks: one in Year 11 and two in Year 12 major projects on creating an information system in year 11, and developing and writing a program in Year 12

Students achieve skills in leadership, innovation, customer service and personal management - through the delivery of a range of projects and services within their school community. Micro business opportunities are also explored. The qualification contains 12 units of competency. Completion of all 12 units will earn a student 8 credit points towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and a Certificate III in Business. Students will receive a Statement of Attainment for partial completion of the course based on the percentage of competencies attained (25%, 50%, and 75%). Students must have a passion for and/or interest in working in the Business Services Industry. They must have good quality written and spoken communication skills showing enthusiasm and motivation to participate in a range of projects. Career Pathways Graduates will be able to use their Certificate III in Business: as an entry level qualification into the Business Services Industries (e.g. customer service advisor, duty manager) to pursue further tertiary pathways (e.g. Certificate IV, Diploma or Bachelor of Business) and to improve their chances of gaining tertiary entrance. BSB40212 CERTIFICATE IV in BUSINESS School-based Vocational Course The BSB40212 Certificate IV in Business is nationally accredited and allows students to thoroughly develop their skills and knowledge base in a wide variety of contexts. Learn to apply solutions to a defined range of unpredictable problems, and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources. Within the 10 units, students will learn how to monitor a safe workplace, manage projects, provide customer service strategies, report on financial activities, produce various computer documents and other competencies. Students can expect to learn all aspects of business performance, management and communication within the workplace as well as externally. Completion of all 12 units will earn a student 8 credit points towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). Students must have a passion for and/or interest in working in the Business Services Industry. Cost The cost to undertake this subject is approximately $1750 for the two year course QLD CERTIFICATE IV JUSTICE STUDIES School-based Vocational Course 39292QLD Certificate IV in Justice Studies is a dynamic program that has practical links to the justice sector. Many students who study Legal Studies plan to seek employment in jobs associated with the law. This course provides relevant skills and knowledge for those wishing to enter a variety of occupations including the police service, justicerelated occupations, corrective services, courts, legal offices, customs service, security industry and private investigations. The opportunity to complete this qualification prior to leaving school is a significant advantage for students. Completion of all 10 units will earn a student 8 credit points. Students will receive a Statement of Attainment for partial completion this will be based on the percentage of competencies attained (25%, 50%, and 75%) e.g. completion of 5 units will earn 4 credits. A Certificate is issued if all units are deemed competent at the level required by the training package. Successful completion of the course gives students direct entry into the Bachelor of Justice and Legal Studies at the University of the Sunshine Coast with 4 credit points (equivalent to 6 months off the duration of the course).
