2 INTRODUCTORY TRAINING COURSE for Safety and Health Representatives OVERVIEW: This course aims to give safety and health representatives the basic knowledge and skills to perform their roles and functions under the legislation with the ultimate aim of improving safety and health in Western Australia. Trainwest is committed to reducing the number of injuries, illnesses and diseases in Western Australian workplaces. The need for this training is clear and Trainwest can equip candidates with skills and knowledge to assist in reaching this goal. Trainwest supports all its learners and therefore encourages those with special needs to also apply. Main topics covered during the course include: Introduction of safety and health and legislation Critical areas of legislation Functions of a SHR, manger, committee and inspector Hazard identification, risk assessment and control Consultation and issue resolution Communication and representation Inspections Investigations Issuing PINs Accessing information and basic records keeping Committees DURATION: This course is completed in five days of face to face training. The course has been broken into five modules for ease of learning: Module One: Occupational safety and health legislation Module Two: Hazard Identification and risk management Module Three: Inspections and investigations Module Four: Communication and representation Module Five: Conflict resolution and Provisional Improvement notices (PINs) RECOMMENDED FOR: Candidates must be an elected safety and health representative LOCATIONS AND COURSE CALENDAR: Please refer to the course calendar (attached) for all your delivery location and date options. *Credit transfers for holders of the Trainwest Cert IV in WHS BSB41412 **Credit transfer for holders of the Trainwest Cert IV in TAE40110 and Cert IV in WHS BSB41412

3 INTRODUCTORY TRAINING COURSE for Safety and Health Representatives ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must be an elected safety and health representative ACTIVITES: The course does not provide a qualification and formal competencies are not assessed. However candidate s performance will be assessed on the knowledge and skills to perform their roles and functions under the legislation. The merits of competency based training are recognised. Candidates will participate in a variety of tasks during the course including written tasks, case studies, demonstration and scenarios. CERTIFICATION: There is no nationally recognised award issued for this course. However, after completion of the Introductory Training Course for Safety and Health with Trainwest, candidates have the option to have their training recognised as part of the BSB30712 Certificate III in Work Health and Safety. The units mapped to this course are below: BSBWHS302A Apply knowledge of WHS legislation in the workplace BSBWHS304A Participate effectively in WHS communication and consultation processes BSBWHS305A Contribute to WHS issue resolution BSBWHS303A Participate in WHS hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control BSBWHS406A Assist with responding to incidents To receive a nationally recognised award the candidate must submit their activity book to Trainwest for assessment. The candidate will also be required to complete additional post course assessments within a six month timeframe to fulfil the requirements of BSB30712 Certificate III in Work Health and Safety. To receive the post course assessments, please phone Trainwest on The remaining units required to be completed are below: BSBCMM201A Communicate in the workplace PUAWER001B identify, prevent and report potential workplace emergency situations BSBWOR401A Establish effective workplace relationships BSBWRT301A Write simple documents BSBCMM401A Make a presentation Recognition of prior learning will be given to those eligible candidates. 4 BSB CERTIFICATE IV in Work Health and Safety OVERVIEW: This qualification is suitable for people working in a work health and safety (WHS) role that may or may not work under supervision. They may provide leadership and guidance to others and have some limited responsibilities for the output of others. This qualification reflects the role of workers who apply a broad knowledge base and well developed skills in a wide variety of contexts and may include coordinators, advisors and facilitators. This course is completed over 5 (five) working days of face to face training. There are small workplace assessments to be completed post course. 7 ASSESSMENT: Participants will be assessed in a variety of ways during the course which will include role play, case studies, demonstrations and scenarios. The post course assignment involved the gathering of evidence relevant to all aspects of health and safety in a workplace environment. CERTIFICATION: Upon completion students will receive the Diploma of Work Health and Safety BSB Upon completion of individual units of competency participants will receive a Statement of Attainment which is a progression toward the Diploma of Work Health and Safety BSB This is a nationally recognised qualification. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: All core units in BSB41412 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety or equivalent competencies: BSBWHS402A Assist with compliance with WHS laws BSBWHS403A Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS consultation and participation processes BSBWHS404A Contribute to WHS hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control BSBWHS405A Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS management systems BSBWHS406A Assist with responding to incidents INVESTMENT: $2200 $1800 (repeat students) PAYMENT PLAN All clients have access to Trainwest s interest free payment plan. The standard payment terms are as follows: $500 payable prior to course commencement $250 payable on a fortnightly basis Payments are accepted via credit card.
