DIRECTOR, POPULATION HEALTH SCIENCES INITIATIVE Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, IL, invites applicants for the position of Associate Professor or Professor and Director of Population Health Sciences. This new position will oversee the development of SIU s recently implemented Population Health Sciences Initiative, with the intent of establishing and becoming the Founding Chair of a new Department of Population Health Sciences at the SIU SOM. The Population Health Sciences Initiative is focused on health outcomes, health services, clinical and general epidemiology, and related population health research relevant to the population of rural central and southern Illinois, which comprises 66 counties and 2.2 million people. SIU now serves the health needs of this region through programs such as telemedicine, three rural regional health offices, continuing education, and outreach. The ideal candidate will be a visionary program builder who has achieved the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at an academic center, with a record of engagement with the communities and populations of rural areas. He/she will have established his/her own independent program of funded population health research, with preference for a focus on cancer control or related areas. Support for this position, in addition to competitive salary and benefits and support for the candidate s research program, will include resources to recruit at least 3 new Population Health Science faculty and a substantial core of research and support staff in behavioral sciences, biostatistics, epidemiology, and other related disciplines as suited to SIU s goals and the candidate s vision for the Department. 2 Position: Director, Population Health Science Initiative, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine Faculty Rank: Associate Professor/Professor General Description: The Director of the Population Health Sciences Program, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, will lead in the creation of this program for the School of Medicine, including managing the process leading to approval of a new department by Southern Illinois University and the Illinois Board of Higher Education. Broadly, the program director will recruit and establish a range of faculty and staff expertise to enhance our understanding of the health of the population served by the School of Medicine, incorporating disciplines such as epidemiology, biostatistics, health communications, health services and health outcomes research, social sciences, public policy, and others. This individual will lead his or her own program of independent research in an appropriate field of study, preferably with a focus on cancer control, epidemiology, and/or outcomes. In addition, he/she will be responsible for organizing and helping to advance the research programs of other population scientists at the medical school and the university, as well as those from other School of Medicine Departments who have relevant interest. At the time that a Department is approved and established, he/she will be appointed as the Founding Chair of the Department. Accordingly, he/she will provide leadership by developing priorities and strategic direction for the Department, recruiting faculty and staff, and assuring that the Department succeeds in its educational, research and service activities in line with the mission of the SIU School of Medicine. When he or she joins SIU SOM, this individual will receive a faculty appointment within a clinical or basic science department most appropriate to his/her area of training and research. For purposes of development of the population health science program, he/she will report to the Associate Dean for Community Health and Service, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine; once a Department is established, as Chair of the Department he/she will report to the Dean of the School of Medicine. The person holding this position will be responsible for the following activities: Administration: 40% A. Oversee and provide leadership for the process of creation and approval by the University of the new Department of Population Health Sciences. B. Establish and oversee plans, budgets, and resource requirements needed to support the program, including the recruitment of new faculty and staff. C. Work with and advise the Dean regarding strategy, development, and overall management of the population health science program. D. Identify faculty within the SIU SOM who could participate in Population Health Sciences teaching, research, and service activities, and help to organize and facilitate their efforts.

Establish relationships and collaborations with SIU Health Care, the Simmons Cancer Institute, and other organizations outside of SIU that enable and enhance population health science activities. F. Once the department is established, oversee and provide leadership for the Department of Population Health Sciences, as the Founding Chair. Research: 40% Education: 10% A. Conduct a program of independent population health science research related to cancer control or related topics, with emphasis on clinical epidemiology, population health outcomes and/or health services research. The program must be successful in attracting substantial ongoing external funding. B. Establish a core set of resources, internal support, and expertise to support the population health science program for the School of Medicine. C. Establish a faculty development and mentoring program for junior faculty who conduct population science research. A. Oversee the Population Health Curriculum for medical students. B. Instruct medical students, residents, fellows, and graduate students in relevant areas of population health science C. Educate colleagues and community practitioners and collaborators about relevant areas of population science. D. Provide community education about relevant areas of population science. Service: 10% A. Serve on Departmental, Medical School, and University Committees, and participate in other institutional activities as appropriate. B. Participate in community activities, in keeping with the School of Medicine Mission Statements. C. Serve appropriate roles in regional and national professional organizations relevant to population health science.

4 Qualifications: Required: MD, PHD, or other terminal degree Demonstrated record of personal academic productivity in population health science Demonstrated record of program development in population health science Desirable: Earned promotion to at least the level of associate professor at an academic institution Experience in program development and leadership in an academic institution Successful track record of ongoing research funding, ideally from national foundations and/or federal government sources National recognition of accomplishments in population health sciences Resources available to support this position: Academic salary for the position Salary support for four additional junior faculty members Salary support for master s level biostatistician Expenses for appropriate professional travel and other professional support. Other support for research/service programs Salary support for three research or service staff, for three years, with expectation that researcher salaries will be funded from external sources thereafter. Funds for purchase of appropriate equipment and commodities needed for research or service activities. Administrative support (office space and equipment, computer and necessary basic software, and full time secretarial support.)
