1 Executive Search Announcement i n v i t e s a p p l i c a t i o n s a n d n o m i n a t i o n s f o r Assistant Dean for Research for the School of Nursing and School of Health Professions The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio seeks a nationally and/or internationally known nurse researcher with an established record of funded research and research-based publications to serve as Assistant Dean for Research for the UT Health Science Center School of Nursing and School of Health Professions. Reporting to and working with the Associate Dean for Research, the Assistant Dean provides transformational leadership in the research missions of the School of Nursing and School of Health Professions. The UT Health Science Center is a world-class, Carnegie Research One, internationally recognized academic health science center.
2 The Opportunity The Assistant Dean for Research position provides an excellent opportunity for an experienced nurse scholar to influence and advance research and scholarship at one of the nation s largest, internationally recognized academic health science centers. The Assistant Dean fosters, supports, and facilitates the highest quality scholarship and research conducted by faculty and students. The Assistant Dean participates in grant development activities through the Office of Nursing Research and Scholarship (ONRS), as well as the School of Health Professions Dean s Office, and secures appropriate resource materials for faculty and doctoral student use. Maintaining an active program of research, the Assistant Dean mentors faculty and doctoral and community scholars in developing programs of research. This research administrator also works collaboratively with Health Science Center colleagues, as well as community counterparts and multicampus sites, in nursing and health professions research efforts. The Assistant Dean advocates for scientific integrity in proposal writing, conduct of investigations, and reporting research findings. In concert with the department chairs, the administrator also shares in the establishment of research goals for the School of Nursing and School of Health Professions, ensuring they are consistent with those of the University. Additionally, the Assistant Dean works closely with the Associate Dean for Research and Vice Dean for Practice and Engagement, as well as department chairs and vice chairs, to assist faculty in reaching their research goals. Responsibilities: The Assistant Dean for Research: Assists in the development of research resources, activities, and liaisons for the School Mentors faculty and doctoral students in development of programs of research Establishes interdisciplinary relationships and activities in the Health Science Center and community Promotes research collaboration between the School and the professional community Mentors faculty and doctoral students in grantsmanship, grants management and coordination, and report writing Shares in the identification of funding priorities and resources for grants, research development, and pre- and post-doctoral support Participates in internal research activities and seed grant reviews in the School Serves as liaison between research in the School and that of affiliated agencies Fosters scholarly engagement across program Works with Vice Dean to place students in the UT Nursing Clinical Enterprise Assists faculty and students in using Health Science Center resources for completion of IRB forms and grant review forms Serves as spokesperson for research activities of the School of Nursing in national and international research forums and conferences Actively participates in researchrelated professional organizations, publications, and grant-review bodies Conducts an active program of research, publication, and grantsmanship Fulfills teaching responsibilities appropriate to expertise Doctoral Program: Doctoral students are considered a part of the community of scholars. They are informed of research development, funding, and scientific news through the Office of Nursing Research and Scholarship. The Assistant Dean for Research works closely with the School of Nursing doctoral faculty to promote, maintain, and expand doctoral studies. Fully knowledgeable about the doctoral curriculum, admission criteria, and supporting cognate requirements, the Assistant Dean facilitates integration of doctoral students into faculty programs of research. 3 In concert with the Vice Dean for Practice and Engagement, Associate Dean for Research, and the Assistant Dean for Graduate Studies, the Assistant Dean for Research: Participates in doctoral student selection process Coordinates recruitment of doctoral student applicants from a national pool Assures match between doctoral student applicants and faculty resources Involves doctoral students in the School s research mission Advises and consults with doctoral students on clarifying research ideas, planning research projects, and focusing dissertation topics Seeks opportunities to include students as part of faculty research teams in grant proposals Provides student consultation and office support for student training and research grant applications Maintains database for faculty and doctoral student research, instrumentation, and dissertation studies, as well as funding applications Provides a forum and environment for faculty-student collaboration in scholarly endeavors Qualifications Qualified candidates will be doctorally prepared, with experience in research and grant development and evaluation.candidates must be experienced in program administation as 75 percent of the responsibilities are administrative and 25 percent are teaching and/or research. Office of Nursing Research and Scholarship The Office of Nursing Research and Scholarship, housed in the School of Nursing, mentors student and faculty investigators, fosters interprofessional collaborations, and helps investigators meet regulatory compliance for engaging in research. In the School of Nursing s Strategic Plan, the goal for scholarship and research is to engage in research to increase knowledge about health and disease and health care delivery and to commercialize discoveries beneficial to the public. Four strategies have been established: Strategy 1 - Build on existing thematic research capabilities and add new thematic capabilities to enhance research collaborations among Health Science Center and other UT System institutions and advance human health with special attention to regional health care issues Strategy 2 - Recruit and nurture the next generation of nurse scientists into the School of Nursing s priority research themes. Strategy 3 - Enhance and expand School of Nursing research technology and infrastructure Strategy 4 - Maximize development and submission of applications to new funding resources being offered through Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and other health care reform focused funding mechanisms to support T3 and T4 translational science The School of Nursing The UTHSCSA School of Nursing is at the forefront of nursing education and research. The school leads excellence in nursing leadership through its innovative teaching, quality research, compassionate care, faculty practice, and service to the South Texas community and the world. As part of the only Tier 1 research university in South Texas and one of the major academic health science centers in the nation, the School of Nursing is the only school in the region to offer doctoral nursing degrees. UTHSCSA is educating future health care providers, but more importantly serving as the leadership pipeline for nursing faculty, clinical leaders and specialists, nurse practitioners, and nurse scientists. The School has 9 Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). Additionally, 59 percent of the full-time faculty are doctorally prepared with another 9 percent enrolled in doctoral programs. With the increasing shortage of nurses in Texas and across the country, the School is committed to preparing nursing students for today s complex health environment. The School of Nursing offers the traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) as well as alternative pathways to the BSN for Page - 3
4 AVANCE Fenley Wellness Clinic, and the San Antonio Refugee Health Clinic. Each provides patient- and family-centered primary and acute care, chronic disease management, behavioral health services for underserved populations, nutrition counseling, a wide range of health care initiatives, and access to research populations. Associate Degree RNs and students who have completed a baccalaureate degree in another field. Additionally, the UTHSCSA School of Nursing Graduate Nursing Program offers educational opportunities for students at the Master s, Post-Master s, and Doctoral levels. The Nursing School has 600 undergraduate and 350 graduate students. As a designated Hispanicserving academic institution, the rich diversity in the student body reflects the School s commitment to educate the next generation of compassionate, culturally-proficient nursing health care professionals at all levels of nursing education. UT Nursing Clinical Enterprise In September 2009, the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio School of Nursing created the Office of Practice and Engagement (OPE). The practice and engagement mission integrates discovery, learning, diversity, delivery, and engagement. In 2010, the OPE evolved to the UT Nursing Clinical Enterprise (UTNCE). The Enterprise provides a research and learning laboratory where evidencebased practice and education occur. The UTNCE creates an accessible, compassionate, high-quality, culturally proficient, and cost-effective health care delivery system for individuals, families, and communities. Since 2009, the UTNCE has been developing, implementing, and evaluating a sustainable alternative to the expensive, inefficient U.S. health care delivery system. Health care delivery in the UTNCE nurseled, nurse-managed clinic networks provides a systematic process for continuous quality improvement. The UTNCE includes the UTHSCSA Student Health Center (SHC), the Employee Health and Wellness Clinic (EHWC), Healy-Murphy Alternative High School Wellness Clinic, AVANCE Community Partnership Clinic, Applications & Nominations The School of Health Professions Confidential inquiries are welcomed and nominations are invited. The School offers bachelor s degrees in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Emergency Heath Science, and Respiratory Care. The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio provides the best in health careers education, biomedical research, patient care, and community service to San Antonio and the 50,000 square-mile area of South Texas. The Health Science Center extends to campuses in the metropolitan border communities of Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley. The Regional Academic Health Education Centers in Harlingen and Edinburg host biomedical researchers, medical students, and residents serving the communities of the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
