1 BREAKTHROUGH TO NURSING CALIFORNIA NURSING STUDENTS ASSOCIATION
2 WHAT IS BREAKTHROUGH TO NURSING? Breakthrough to Nursing began fifty years ago, in The goal of this project is to organize, represent, and mentor nursing students into becoming sensitive to our culturally diverse society. This project promotes an increase in recruitment and retention within the nursing profession.
3 BREAKTHROUGH TO NURSING (BTN) RESPONSIBILITIES Educate the community about the profession of nursing Encourage recruitment and retention of minorities to increase the diversity of nursing Promote a positive, accurate image of nursing Organize and execute BTN events Work with local high schools to give in-class presentations on nursing Promote academic success through mentorship programs
4 EDUCATE THE COMMUNITY Nursing is a great profession! Share the endless possibilities the nursing profession holds to others in the community Host an event on campus to inform faculty, students and the community about the nursing profession Include hands on learning to encourage involvement and interest
5 HOW CAN LOCAL CHAPTERS GET INVOLVED? Local school presentations on the nursing profession Contact local hospitals to have a career day for students Have students write letters to high school counselors letting them know how much they are learning, and refer potential nursing students to them if they have questions Have a BTN fundraiser to provide funds for tutoring students with academic needs Encourage minority students in the school of nursing to get involved and serve as role models and mentors Focus on retention and recruitment of students, such as through peer support groups Give a tour of your nursing program to future nursing students Get involved with the state Breakthrough to Nursing project
