Statement of Beliefs concerning the importance of teaching, research, and community/public service to the overall mission of the university: In keeping with the mission of Louisiana Tech University, I am committed to quality in teaching in the Division of Nursing. Nursing is a unique profession in which an educator must build upon the foundation of pathologies, instill critical thinking, assessment skills and decision-making, while invoking the non-summative qualities of caring and compassion. It is my goal to provide an atmosphere of learning as a member 1

2 of a student oriented faculty that stimulates the necessary critical thinking and academic excellence that nursing demands. In support of the University mission to provide opportunities for interaction between students and the larger community, with on-campus learning, off campus presence, Service Learning is utilized as an integral part of Nursing 210, Maternal/Newborn Health Maintenance, and Nursing 212, Child Health Maintenance. Service Learning embodies the mission in providing opportunities for students to intertwine the academic environment with community service and civic engagement. It has been my privilege to teach in courses that utilize this worthwhile tool for learning while promoting civic duty and making a positive impact on our surrounding communities. In light of my involvement with Service Learning, I have partnered with other nursing faculty to present oral and poster presentations within the college, state, and region to represent Louisiana Tech University s commitment to quality in teaching,...creative activity, and public service. Research that I am involved with involves the effect of caring in nursing faculty on nursing students in the clinical setting, and the effect of maternity nursing on male nursing students. I feel that learning is best retained in a relaxed atmosphere where the student is an active participant in the learning process, with a variety of instructional methods utilized. My philosophy is to retain an expectation of excellence while providing a caring presence as a nursing instructor. As a member of the Division of Nursing, I am committed to uphold the mission of the Division and maintain the University standard of academic excellence and lifelong learning through a balance of teaching, research, and service, while fostering caring as well as clinically competent nurses of the future. 2
