1 PRESIDENT S SCHOLARS PROGRAM SUPPORT THE PRESIDENT S SCHOLARS PROGRAM AT WEST HILLS COLLEGE
2 REWARD ALL TOP STUDENTS BASED ON ACADEMIC MERIT Rewarding academic success is at the heart of the President s Scholars Program that provides free tuition and $250 a semester in books to all California high school graduates with a 3.5 or higher grade point average who plan to attend West Hills College. For some students, the choice to attend West Hills is purely financial but for others the idea of attending college close to home helps them stay focused on academic success. No matter what the reason, more and more of these top students are turning to West Hills and the needs for this privately-funded scholarship are dramatically increasing. Over the first 15 years of the program, there were usually between 15 and 25 students enrolled at West Hills as a President s Scholars. With the dramatic increases in CSU and UC tuition the number of President s Scholars has grown to over 100 in The success of the program depends on the generosity of donors like you. Your support means that ALL qualified students can attend the first two years of college with little or no expense if they can continue to live at home.
3 Your support makes the President s Scholarship possible $ 25,000 establishes a scholarship in perpetuity bearing your name (arrangements can be made over three years) West Hills is committed to keeping the doors open for these students but our costs are increasing and we need your help. Please consider a tax-deductible investment in these top students by making a contribution to the West Hills Community College Foundation. $ 11,280 provides three full scholarships for one year $ 3,760 provides one scholarship $ 1,880 provides one scholarship for one semester Fresno State communications major Kaleo Lopez grew roots in the college world during his two years as a President s Scholar at West Hills. In addition to saving more than $30,000 in tuition and housing costs while he earned 60 units that all transferred to Fresno State, he had a chance to figure out a career path. I didn t realize I liked public speaking but WHC instructors encouraged me. That encouragement led Kaleo to serve as the 2013 commencement speaker at West Hills College Coalinga and at Rotary Clubs in the area. The Avenal High School graduate plans to pursue a career as a college communications instructor. Randy Williams works more than 50 hours a week at two different jobs while attending WHCL. Some nights I don t sleep, says Williams, but I always get to class and get my work done. Randy says that his time at West Hills has been well spent. I thought I wanted to be a meteorologist, then I was interested in corrections, then I thought about the psych tech program. A computer class at West Hills showed him the opportunities for careers in information technology and he plans to transfer and get his four-year degree in that field. With parents working in the field and no legal residency, North District Center Firebaugh student Mariana Torres would not be able to attend college without the help of the President s Scholars Program. The scholarship and other West Hills College programs are allowing her to pursue her dream of becoming an accountant and helping her family. Without this program, I wouldn t know if I m capable of being successful in college, Marianna says. You choose your path and work hard to do your part but the people who donate to the scholarship are making it possible. $ 500 pays for books for one year for one scholarship $ please add this to your endowment to make sure that this program is available for ALL qualified students in perpetuity Cost of Attendance: *UC Berkeley $ 32,068 *CSU Fresno $ 20,681 *West Hills College $ 6,364 *Living on campus The West Hills Community College Foundation has a goal of raising $1 million to endow the President s Scholars Program.
