The PLI team is dedicated t prviding utstanding prfessinal learning that is targeted, grunded in research and respnsive t feedback frm participants. The fcus f the PLI in 2012 will be n leadership develpment with an emphasis n schl leadership. During 2012 cnsultatin will take place acrss the agency t ensure apprpriate prfessinal learning is develped fr all members f the Department f Educatin. Beliefs The wrk f the Prfessinal Learning Institute is integral t the sense and missin f the Department and will be guided by the fllwing seven beliefs. The Institute team believes that prfessinal learning is mst effective when it is: Fcussed - n the needs f the learner. Evidence-driven - based upn learning data and grunded in current and best-available thery and research. The wrk f the Institute will be guided by the principles develped in line with the Department s Strategic Plan. Design and develp prfessinal learning prgrams based upn: using learning data accessing and using prfessinal standards actin research, inquiry and feedback prcesses mentring and caching active learning practices (participatin, bservatin, demnstratin). Implement leadership prgrams that supprt and meet the needs f established and emergent leaders (current principals, aspirant principals, teacher leaders, administratin and executive staff). Wrk cllabratively with the Netwrk Leaders and schl leadership teams, as well as expert prviders f prfessinal learning, t cnnect emplyees t cntextualised and meaningful learning. Fster leadership capacity in thers by facilitating prfessinal dialgue. Engage current research. The PLI Team Dr Jhn Ewingtn - Principal Leader, Prfessinal Learning Institute Jhn has had 36 years f experience wrking fr the Department f Educatin starting as a Mathematics/Science teacher at Smithtn High Schl. Jhn has been a Principal f three schls: Smithtn High, Ulverstne High and Sheffield District High. He wrked as a Cluster Crdinating Principal and has been the Prgram Manager f Schl Leadership Develpment fr the past three years. Jhn spent sme time n secndment t the University f Tasmania lecturing bth undergraduate and pst graduate students. A member f the inaugural executive f the Tasmanian Principals' Assciatin, Jhn als represented the TPA n the Australian Secndary Principals Assciatin Natinal Bard. He has been a Natinal Directr f the Australian Cuncil fr Educatinal Leadership fr fifteen years and is a Fellw f the Australian Cuncil fr Educatinal Leaders (ACEL). Jhn hlds a Master f Educatin degree and a Dctr f Philsphy. His master s research was int change in schls which led t mre extensive study f schl effectiveness fr his PhD. He has authred and c-authred several papers n schl leadership and has presented papers at natinal and internatinal cnferences. Stephanie Hickey- Prfessinal Learning Leader Stephanie Hickey started dwn her teaching pathway with the Department f Educatin Tasmania in Her early career pstings had a very distinct rural flavur: Tarraleah and Wayatinah Primary Schls, and then pstings at Ringarma Primary and Winnaleah District High. When Steph mved t Hbart fr the 1998 schl year, she bught with her a diverse range f teacher-learner experiences K-10, a grwing knwledge f schl management practices and a strng sense f being cnnected t a cmmunity. Steph cntinued in teaching and leadership rles in the nrthern-suburbs schls f Hbart until August 2010 when she mved t Learning Services Suth in a Prject Officer s rle. Steph s pst graduate studies have included a specialisatin in Teaching Mathematics and mre recently, Prfessinal Learning and Schl Imprvement. She has als cmpleted studies in Grwth Caching and Cgnitive Caching. 5 Bernadette Hward - Prfessinal Learning Leader Bernadette Hward has ver 25 years f experience in educatin in Tasmania. Her leadership and prfessinal learning rles have fcussed heavily n caching, mentring and cllabrating and imprving prfessinal practice. Mst recently she was principal at Cee Primary prir t jining the Institute. Bernadette s pst-graduate qualificatins include an accredited Agency Trainer fr the Centre fr Cgnitive Caching and a trainer in training fr the Centre fr Adaptive Schls. She has cached principals, leadership teams and adults frm diverse wrkfrces. As an educatinal leader, Bernadette is renwned fr her passin fr develping selfdirectedness and belief in distributed leadership. She brings with her significant experience in grwing this culture in educatinal settings. Max Drummy - Prfessinal Learning Leader Max Drummy cmes t the Institute after years as an ICT teacher, leader, and innvatr. His teaching jurney began in Victrian High Schls, and then tk him t Suthern China fr 3 years, where he wrked in an Internatinal Baccalaureate Schl in the industrial city f Guangzhu (frmerly Cantn). Upn return frm China, Max was drawn t Tasmania by the educatinal leadership pprtunities the Department f Educatin presented. He has been an Advanced Skills Teacher and Assistant Principal fr 8 years, cmpleting an M.Ed. in 2009 and bth GROWTH and Cgnitive Caching accreditatins. In 2011, Max mved int a prfessinal leadership rle acrss the nrth f the state, where the fcus was t prvide ICT-based prfessinal learning and strategic advice t schls. He extends this rle as a part f the Prfessinal Learning Institute. Besides being passinate abut family life and tinkering in the shed, Max is highly cmmitted t explring hw effective educatin systems lead and educate fr future generatins. Ruth Radfrd - Principal Prject Leader, PITE Ruth Radfrd has had leadership rles in a number f the Department s prfessinal learning initiatives. She was General Manager f the Tasmanian Educatinal Cnsrtium and later Assistant Directr, Leadership and Learning supprting the state-wide prfessinal learning team fr the Essential Learnings Curriculum. Currently she is the Principal Prject Leader fr the Partnership in Teaching Excellence (PiTE), a Department schlarship prgram fr pre-service teachers. Ruth has a Master f Educatin, is an agency cach fr the Centre f Cgnitive Caching and an accredited Grwth Caching cach. Carl Bellchambers - Business Manager Carl Bellchambers previusly wrked in the private sectr fr Price Waterhuse and was secnded frm TAFE t the Department f Educatin in She has cnsiderable business and crprate experience, particularly within the Department f Educatin, where ver a perid f eighteen years she has held a variety f psitins including Executive Assistant Schl Leadership, Data Management Officer and Human Resurces Officer. Add t this extensive experience Carl s qualificatins include Advanced Diplma Accunting and Assciated Diplma Business which equip her fr this rle. Carl is enjying the challenge f this exciting new rle as the Business Manager at the Prfessinal Learning Institute and wrking with the team acrss all Institute peratins including, prgrams, marketing and finance in additin t assisting the Principal Leader and Prfessinal Learning Leaders. Jan Bwer - Executive Assistant - Teacher Learning Centre Jan s wrking life has been that f cntinual learning, as evidenced by the variety f rles undertaken: Persnal Assistant, Research Officer, Electrate Officer, web publisher and develper and event c-rdinatr. Her experience within State and Federal agencies has included the Department f Premier and Cabinet, the Australian Gvernment Ministerial Service, NSW Department f Turism, Mental Health Cmmissin, Department f Infrastructure, Energy and Resurces and the Department f Educatin. As a member f a team, Jan has c-rdinated State-wide prfessinal learning prgrams fr teachers, cnferences, seminars and fficial functins. Jan als assisted with the develpment and prductin f Essential Learnings print publicatins and the Learning, Teaching and Assessment Guide nline resurce. Since its establishment in June 2009, Jan has managed the peratins f the Teacher Learning Centre. She als prvides executive assistance arund the Partnerships in Teaching Excellence Prgram.
