A dozen members went to Puerto Rico for our annual national conference. We were delighted and inspired to see old friends and new colleagues from around the nation. This year SDNAHN funds supported members with transportation cost to attend the conference, in this way; SDNAHN helps members and the community by bringing new and fresh ideas back to our local chapter. Now that we have had a wonderful summer including time with our families, some of us are preparing to head back to school. Along with thoughts of school is a reminder to get ready for the scholarship dinner on October 6, at the Hilton San Diego Airport/Harbor Island. SDNAHN has now made it fast and easy to buy tickets on line with PayPal. Order early to guarantee your spot for a fun filled night of entertainment, guest speaker, and great food; I look forward in seeing all of you at our scholarship dinner. 2 SDNAHN 2 NAHN ANNUAL CONFERENCE July 2012 Contributed by Magda Angel Puerto Rico, La Isla del Encanto, provided the perfect setting for the 37 th Annual Conference of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses. This tropical island was the setting of many adventures and life changing experiences for two San Diego chapter board members, Vice-president Eliane "Lee" Moreira-Ali and director Magda Angel. The first national nursing conference for both of us, we had the opportunity to network among the professionals attending and became motivated by inspiring key note speakers. At the same time, we were able to explore one of nature s most beautiful rainforests, El Yunque, a spectacular experience in itself to visit this subtropical National Forest Reserve. At this conference we met and befriended other chapter members who shared their success stories with us. Their experiences urged us to bring and implement new programs into SDNAHN chapter and hoping to one day obtain recognition at a national nursing conference. Another wonderful memory that we will cherish are the inspirational speeches led by amazing role models that planted a seed of success and leadership in our hearts For example, Dr. Josefina Lujan, who shared her journey to establish a BSN program at Texas Tech University in El Paso, Texas. Every story shared by these astounding professionals was profound and unforgettable. We returned from our Caribbean trip with suitcases full of ideas, memories and souvenirs from an inspiring conference.

4 SDNAHN 4 SDNAHN 14 th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser Gala Keynote Speaker Sylvia Mendez This year we are honored to have Sylvia Mendez the keynote speaker for our 14 th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser Gala. Ms. Mendez shown above with her honorary Medal of Freedom will amaze you with her story and the story of Mendez vs. Westminster. A civil rights case which helped outlaw segregation in California seven years prior to Brown v. Board of Education. Ms. Mendez was born in Orange County, attended Orange Coast Community College where she earned her Associate of Arts degree in nursing. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and Certificate in Public Health from California State University of Los Angeles. In 2012, Sylvia received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. In addition to a 33 year career as a nurse at the Los Angeles University of Southern California Medical Center she held the position of Assistant Nursing Director of the Pediatric Pavilion in her final five years of service. In 2011 Ms. Mendez received the Medal of Freedom Award from President Obama, and Ms. Mendez has received many awards including lifetime achievement awards and Certificates of Recognition for her efforts to advocate for education.

5 SDNAHN 5 SUMMER PICNIC On Saturday July 14, 2012, SDNAHN held its annual picnic in Mission Bay at Hospitality Point. The day started out a bit cold and overcast, but around noon the sun finally came out and the high-spf sunscreen was very useful. There was a excellent member turnout, including new members who brought their families. Special shout out to the Executive Board who worked tirelessly to make this picnic the most enjoyable thus far. There was delicious food, plenty of drinks to keep the attendees hydrated, and fun games for entertainment. Our treasury department sold t-shirts with the SDNAHN logo, and some of our members took advantage of the one-day deal for our scholarship dinner gala which is right around the corner on October 6th, 2012 at the Hilton Hotel. Additionally, this year there was an especially high turnout of children. The games included Loteria, Volleyball, and the ever popular potato sack competition, all of which kept the attendees entertained. However, it seemed Loteria was very popular, as was the adults vs. kids potato sack race! Congratulations to Teresa Aldana, our SDNAHN member who won a free ticket to the Scholarship Gala simply by attending the picnic. Looking forward to the next one! 6 SDNAHN 6 Activities Page Thousand Smiles trip to Ensenada occurs quarterly to assist with surgeries to repair cleft lips and palates; any volunteer is welcome, no matter what your skill level. Nurses and nursing students clean & prep surgical instruments, if you speak Spanish great, but not necessary. Great experience and very rewarding, a passport is required. 7 SDNAHN 7 Podium Presentation at NAHN Conference By Felipe Gutierrez I joined SDNAHN as a student over 13 years ago, through the leadership and mentorship of many I finished my associate degree, and continued on to obtain my Bachelors degree. Through scholarship funds from both SDNAHN and NAHN I was afforded the opportunity to continue my education and obtain my masters degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner. I have also had the opportunity to give back to the community. I have participated in multiple community events allowing me to touch many people. As an advanced practice nurse I have an obligation to teach when opportunities arise. Since becoming a member I have had two podium presentations at a national conference through NAHN, the first opportunity was upon completion of my bachelor s degree. It was such a confidence booster and a great learning opportunity that led to many other presentations. I have presented multiple times since my first presentation through NAHN and I really owe my expertise to the leadership that opened up the doors to those opportunities. This year I was given the podium to present my evidenced based practice study titled, Acute Alcohol Withdrawal Prevention and Management: A Systematic Approach. The study was a three-phase study focusing on prevention of alcohol withdrawal in the in-patient medical-surgical patient. I discussed the use of evidenced based practice tools to monitor the patient s condition. I was able to share with those attending how I conducted the study with a multidisciplinary team of physicians, pharmacists, and nursing. When I saw the call for abstracts, I knew I had to submit the study so that I could convey to those attending how critical of a problem alcohol withdrawal is and how nurses can be leaders in ensuring the safety of these patients while under their care.

9 SDNAHN 9 IN THE NEWS Congratulations to Sophia Jimenez our NAHN Scholarship recipient Hi, my name is Sophia Jimenez; I have been a member of NAHN SD chapter since I graduated from Southwestern College ADN program in May 2011 and currently working on a Medical-Surgical floor. I am also attending Grand Canyon University on-line in their RN to BSN program; graduation will be mid October I was very fortunate to receive a scholarship at the annual NAHN conference this year that was held in Puerto Rico. What an extraordinary experience, it was very motivating and inspiring to be among such educated Hispanic nurses. It is amazing to hear what our colleagues are doing and accomplishing around the United States. Attending the conference motivates you to continue with our education and inspires you to continue doing great things within your communities. It also makes me proud to be among all the wonderful nurses in my own SD chapter of NAHN. I would like to thank the members for the scholarships I have been awarded here locally and for being such great mentors and leaders. I feel honored to be a member and working alongside all of you.
