1 ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT FOR ADVANCEMENT, COLLEGES AND UNITS UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL FLORIDA FOUNDATION Orlando, Florida The Aspen Leadership Group is proud to partner with the University of Central Florida Foundation in the search for an Associate Vice President for Advancement, Colleges and Units. As a member of the senior management team, the Associate Vice President for Advancement will be responsible for providing leadership to members of the UCF advancement staff and managing the activities of UCF s fundraising efforts. The University of Central Florida is a public, multi- campus, metropolitan research university that stands for opportunity. UCF is the nation s second- largest university, serving more than 60,000 students. It is one of the public institutions in the nation with the Carnegie Foundation's very high research designation. UCF provides high- quality, broad- based education and experienced- based learning, pioneering scholarship and impactful research, enriched student development and leadership growth, and highly relevant continuing education and public service initiatives. UCF s 13 colleges offer 93 bachelor s degree programs, 84 master s programs, and 31 doctoral programs to serve 54,766 undergraduate students, 8,150 graduate students, and 457 M.D. students. UCF also administers 11 regional campuses across Central Florida and a wide variety of centers and institutes, including the world- renowned Institute for Simulation and Training. Among UCF s best known programs and the DeVos Sport Business Management Program, the Florida Interactive Entertainment Institute, and the Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers. UCF maintains valued relationships with hundreds of partners ranging from school districts and video game producers, to health care networks and the Department of Defense. UCF is consistently ranked as one of the nation s best values in higher education. Nearly half of UCF students graduate with no educational debt, versus a third nationally. Some 77 percent of undergraduate students receive financial aid, of which the university awarded $437 million last year. 2 PRINCIPAL OPPORTUNITIES As a young university, UCF lacks the longstanding tradition of philanthropy enjoyed by older institutions. Additionally, development was not a major area of emphasis until the last two decades. While UCF benefits from strong philanthropic partnerships with a wide variety of local, regional, national, and international corporations and foundations, great opportunity for growth exists in support from individual alumni and in instilling the culture of philanthropy in current students. With 235,000 living alumni and more than 13,000 new graduates per year, the potential is tremendous. Ignite, the Campaign for UCF, is nearing the end of the leadership phase. With a final campaign goal of $500 million by 2018, the campaign has raised just over $200 million to date. The new AVP should possess an entrepreneurial mindset with a tolerance for risk and a focus on partnerships. The right candidate has the opportunity to make a significant impact on UCF philanthropy. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS The Associate Vice President for Advancement, Colleges and Units reports to the Vice President of Alumni Relations and Executive Director of the UCF Foundation. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES The Associate Vice President, Colleges and Units will orient, train, mentor, and coach staff members, encouraging an appropriate level of independence and supporting professional growth; effectively lead change initiatives affecting staff; identify the current and long- term professional development and training needs of individuals and groups and provide or facilitate access to appropriate development experiences; establish, delegate, communicate, monitor, and reinforce staff assignments, accountabilities, performance expectations, and goals; ensure alignment of fundraising goals and strategies with the priority fundraising needs of the University of Central Florida; develop fundraising strategies for individuals, corporations, and foundations consistent with UCF Advancement's overall mission and fundraising plans; foster a culture of philanthropy within the organization; assure that the organization's corporate culture, systems, and procedures support fund development; lead the development of major fundraising campaigns and overall fundraising plans; help develop a balanced funding mix of donor sources and solicitation programs tailored to the needs of the organization that will enable it to attract, retain, and motivate donors and fundraising volunteers; 2

3 collaborate with other senior leaders to develop relationships with partners in the public and private sector that are key to the foundation's successful fundraising; ensure the use of consistent messaging and themes that reinforce UCF Advancement's brand value and reflect its initiatives and fundraising campaigns through all Advancement's publications; oversee staff, budgets, programs, and projects; interact regularly with Operations, Prospect Development, and other staff members to ensure seamless recording and reporting of fundraising finances; lead the team in the development of a comprehensive plan that scales up fundraising and supports sustained growth over a 3-5 year timeline; represent Advancement on senior- level committees responsible for decisions affecting the institution; and help establish performance measures, monitor results and help the chief executive officer evaluate the effectiveness of the organization's fund development program. KEY COLLEAGUES Michael Morsberger Vice President of Alumni Relations and Development and CEO, UCF Foundation, Inc. Michael Morsberger is the Vice President of Alumni Relations and Development and the CEO of the UCF Foundation, Inc., at the University of Central Florida. Mike has achieved record- breaking successes at the George Washington University, Duke University, the University of Virginia and John Hopkins University. Mike previously served as vice president of development and alumni relations at the George Washington University, laying the groundwork for the $1 billion Making History Campaign. Prior to joining George Washington, Mike served as vice president of development and alumni relations at Duke Medicine, as associate vice president of development and alumni relations for the University of Virginia Health System, and as executive director of the UVA Health Foundation. From 1995 to 2004, Mike worked with John Hopkins University, advancing from major gifts officer to chief development officer of the university s renowned comprehensive cancer center. A first- generation college graduate, Mike received his bachelor s degree in journalism from Radford University and his master s degree in philanthropy and development from Saint Mary s University of Minnesota. Mike is married to his college sweetheart, Marybeth, and has two daughters, Courtney and Allison. 3

4 Ben McMahan Associate Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, UCF Foundation, Inc. Ben McMahan is Associate Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the UCF Foundation, Inc. As COO, he is responsible for the ongoing operational aspects of the foundation, which includes communications and donor relations, legal, accounting, real estate, information technologies, advancement services, and human resources. Ben retired from Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. where he was the Senior Vice President of Retail Client Services/Affluent Market. He graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Political Science, and served three years in the U.S. Navy before joining the city planning department in Norfolk, Virginia. He traded commodities for Conti Commodities, an arm of Continental Grain for 12 years before joining Charles Schwab and Co., Inc. Prior to Schwab, Ben held broker positions with A.G. Edwards. Ben is past chairperson of the UCF College of Business Dean s Executive Council and also past chairperson for the UCF Planned Giving Board. He has served on the boards of the Central Florida Metropolitan YMCA, the Advisory Committee for the American Heart Association and Hospice of the Comforter Foundation. He previously served on the UCF Foundation Board as a member and vice- chair. Currently, he serves on the school board for Morning Star School in Orlando. Julie Stroh Associate Vice President, Alumni Relations and Executive Director, UCF Alumni Association Julie Stroh joined the University of Central Florida in October 2015 and serves as the associate vice president of alumni relations and the executive director of the UCF Alumni Association. Prior to her current position, Julie served at Ball State University as associate vice president of alumni programs and president and CEO of the Ball State University Alumni Association, utilizing strategic engagement to build a culture of philanthropy. She provided programs and services for over 160,000 alumni, oversaw a 42- member governing board, and led the development and implementation of a five- year strategic plan which aligned the Alumni Association with the university s priorities. She also completed the Alumni Association s first capital campaign match of $300,000, which produced $1.9 million in additional alumni gifts. In addition to leading alumni staff efforts, Julie has also been involved in alumni leadership as a volunteer board member, serving from 2003 to 2012 on the Alumni Association board of directors of her alma mater, the University of Michigan. Her service included four years as treasurer and two as chair of one of the largest and most active alumni bodies in the world. Julie earned her master s degree at the University of Miami and later held several key leadership positions in the university s Office of Alumni Relations. While there she was involved in Miami s successful capital campaign, Momentum2, which raised $1.6 billion. 4

5 Anne Botteri Associate Vice President, Department of Communication and Marketing Anne Botteri oversees the Department of Communication and Marketing at the University of Central Florida Foundation that includes donor relations, alumni communications, and special events. She is charged with developing and articulating the communications and marketing strategies to guide these areas in support of UCF s strategic fundraising, alumni engagement and donor recognition activities, including the creation and production of case materials and development collateral. She also provides communications counsel and support for the UCF Foundation CEO and board of directors. Before joining the foundation, she was Assistant Vice President for Communications and Marketing at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire and Executive Editor of Portraits magazine. Anne led the fundraising efforts that helped create the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm and served as its executive director for five years. She has experience managing diverse communications and marketing teams in news, graphic design, creative services, web and electronic marketing, editorial and writing services, and multimedia production. She has an extensive portfolio of writing and has led creative projects ranging from case statements for capital campaigns to admission view books and a range of development publications and video projects. She has won multiple CASE awards and has served as a speaker and judge for CASE programs. Prior to her work in higher education, she worked in public affairs in Washington DC and served as chief of staff of a federal agency within the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in English at Saint Anselm in 1982 and her Masters in Fine Arts at Southern New Hampshire University in Bill Dean Associate Vice President for Advancement Bill Dean, who joined the UCF in September 2015 brings over 34 years of experience in university outreach, of which 24 years have been specifically focused on fundraising. Working at institutions such as the Johns Hopkins University, the University of Virginia, Duke University, and the George Washington University, Bill has direct experience in annual giving, major and principal gift work, program and staff management, event creation and direction, volunteer management and campaign planning and implementation. He has worked with donors that range from alumni, parents, and grateful patients to corporations, foundations, and organizations. Bill received his bachelor s degree in international relations from Johns Hopkins and from that experience retains an avid interest in international affairs and lacrosse. 5

6 CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS AND QUALITIES The ideal candidate for the position of Associate Vice President, Colleges and Units will have a successful track record as a principal- gift fundraiser, along with senior leadership experience of a comprehensive capital campaign; significant experience in a senior administrative leadership position in a fundraising and strategic planning setting; demonstrated experience in philanthropic partnerships; successful recruitment, training, and evaluation of talented, dedicated, and motivated staff; demonstrated experience working with and managing high- level volunteers including members of a foundation board; a reputation for integrity; demonstrated experience working with a mutually accountable leadership team that shares goals and works effectively together to achieve them; the ability to make timely decisions and to act responsively; an aptitude for nimble and flexible behavior; intellectual depth and curiosity; a commitment to high quality performance, continuous improvement, and personal accountability; a passion for public higher education and for maintaining educational access and affordability in the 21 st century; a commitment to student and faculty opportunity and success; an entrepreneurial mindset with a tolerance for risk and a focus on partnerships; and a demonstrated commitment to diversity. A Master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and seven years of relevant experience; or a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and nine years of relevant experience are required for this position.
