2 Rice University William Marsh Rice University (commonly known as Rice University and opened in 1912 as The William Marsh Rice Institute for the Advancement of Letters, Science and Art) is a private coeducational research university located in Houston, Texas. Houston is the nation s fourthlargest city, the energy capital of the world, and a dynamic international business and cultural center. The campus is near the Houston Museum District and adjacent to the Texas Medical Center. The student body consists of over 3,700 undergraduate and 2,374 graduate degree seeking students. The University employs 670 full-time faculty and 334 part-time or adjunct faculty members. Rice has a very high level of research activity and had $111.3 million in sponsored research funding in As a commitment to excellence, an uncommon drive toward innovation and 100 years of unparalleled achievement, the University recently concluded The Centennial Campaign, raising in excess of $1billion. The University is noted for its applied science programs in the fields of nanotechnology artificial heart research, structural chemical analysis, and space science. Rice was elected to the Association of American Universities in 1985, and is No. 17 in the current U.S. News and World Report s National Universities rankings. In addition, the Kiplinger Personal Finance magazine ranks Rice as the country s No. 2 Best Values among private universities. Of significance is the fact that the University is listed as one of 30 Hidden Ivies as well as one of Newsweek s New Ivies. The University is organized into eight schools offering 40 undergraduate degree programs, 51 masters programs, and 29 doctoral programs. The Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business Transforming Business Thought The Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business (JGSB) received its initial funding in 1974 through a major gift from the Houston Endowment Inc., a philanthropic foundation established by Mr. Jones and his wife, Mary Gibbs Jones. The JGSB, one of eight academic units at Rice University, is committed to excellence in knowledge creation and in business education. As an integral part of Rice University, one of the nation s most distinguished institutions of higher education, the JGSB offers four primary academic programs: the Full Time MBA, the MBA for Executives, the MBA for Professionals, and the PhD. in Business. Along with these programs, the School also provides the following graduate degrees: a joint MBA/ME with the George R. Brown School of Engineering; a joint MBA/MS with the Weiss School of Natural Sciences; and a joint MD/MBA with Baylor College of Medicine. The Jones School also offers an undergraduate business minor and a full schedule of non-credit executive education through custom-designed programs and open enrollment courses. Page 2

3 Pursuing several initiatives to attract and retain the best faculty and students, JGSB is on a sustained upward trajectory on the outcomes that matter most to our key stakeholders: intellectual contributions of our faculty; quality of faculty in the classroom; quality of the incoming students; and value to alumni, employers, and the community. Most of the metrics associated with these outcomes are now in the top 20 domestically. Following a growth for excellence strategy, JGSB simultaneously hit record highs in terms of quality and overall size of the School. With over 5,000 alumni and broad support from the Rice and Houston communities, the School is nearing completion of a capital campaign, raising $65 million for faculty, students, and programs. The Jones School MBA programs continue to be recognized nationally and internationally for leadership and innovation. Recently, the Financial Times ranked the Rice Full Time MBA program No. 4 Best in Accountancy, No. 5 Best in Finance, worldwide, and No. 11 in the U.S. for the Executive MBA program. In addition, the Princeton Review and Entrepreneur magazine have ranked the Rice MBA as the No. 4 Graduate Entrepreneurship program, nationally, the School No. 8 for Best Professors and Best Administered, and No. 1 in Texas. Businessweek recognized the Rice MBA for Professionals as No. 6 in the U.S., and best in the Southwest and Texas. Through teaching, research, an atmosphere of discovery, and a healthy and collaborative partnership with the business community, the Jones School strives to enrich its students and the global community in business excellence grounded in principles and innovation. The Position Principal Duties and Responsibilities The Assistant Dean of MBA Programs reports to the faculty dean of academic programs and assists and supports the deans in leading and managing the Jones Graduate School of Business, primarily as it relates to the School s graduate degree programs. The Assistant Dean provides leadership and oversight for the Office of Admissions, Career Management Center, Office of Student Services (full-time and professional MBA programs), and Executive MBA Program Office. She/He oversees a team of over thirty professionals, with five direct reports. Specific Responsibilities Executive Leadership Develop and implement strategies to deliver strong value-added academic programs in a supporting and engaging environment to high quality students, leading to graduation of students with substantially increased potential to attain their professional and personal goals, as demonstrated by their near-term employment placements and their long-term leadership positions. 4 Report to the faculty dean of programs, and interface with the Deans Coordinating Council, faculty, and staff to determine and execute strategies that move the school forward in attaining our goal of providing a world class business education. Represent the Dean s office in administering all aspects of the fulltime, professional, and executive MBA programs. Regularly assess the status of the programs with respect to internal performance objectives and external benchmarking. Analyze MBA rankings methodologies and recommend action plans for improving the quality and visibility of the program and the School s recognition in the rankings. Partner with other JGSB and Rice units to leverage resources and build reputation. Serve in the role of student ombudsman, determining appropriate course of action in instances of conflict with School policies and norms. Represent the Dean s office on School and University committees as needed. Provide strategic leadership and integration of international programs and alliances across the degree programs. Staff Management Provide executive-level oversight of Admissions Office, Career Management Center, Office of Student Services, and Executive MBA Program. Advise, mentor, and provide guidance, as necessary, to staff members. Lead, coach and evaluate the performance of direct reports. Evaluate staff annually and provide necessary action to ensure effective and efficient outcomes. Maintain clear goals and objectives, and track progress through performance metrics. Financial Administration Develop and monitor the budget for academic program offices. Work with executive directors to develop and monitor budgets for the Office of Admissions and the Career Management Center. The Person Experience and Qualifications Seven to ten years of significant experience managing people and processes. Prefer at least three years at an institution of higher education, preferably in a senior staff role in a business school. Proven track record of progressively responsible management and leadership. Experience in building relationships with faculty, professional staff, and students. Strong interpersonal skills and organizational abilities. Page 4

5 Proven experience and success in managing responsibilities and projects simultaneously. Ability to identify and analyze issues and develop alternative courses of action using creativity and problem solving skills. Excellent verbal and written communication with both internal and external constituents, strong public speaking and presentation skills. Graduate degree required; MBA degree preferred.
