1 Idaho Humane Society Job Description Senior Director of Development The Idaho Humane Society is a community-supported open-door facility that provides shelter, medical care, adoption services, humane law enforcement services and much more to over 20,000 animals annually. Since its incorporation in 1945, the Idaho Humane Society has become one of the most recognized and beloved nonprofit organizations in the community. Department: Classification: Job Relationships: Development Regular, full-time, exempt Supervised by CEO Supervises: Special Programs and Events Coordinator Donor Communications and Events Director Development Database Administrative Assistant Salary: Benefits: DOE Paid time off accrual, eight paid holidays, retirement plan, health insurance, dental insurance and supplemental insurance. All employees receive discounts on veterinary care and retail store pet supplies, as well as veterinary care credit and one free adoption annually. Position Summary: Plans, develops, implements and oversees all fundraising activities for the Idaho Humane Society. Directs activities of the development department and provides leadership and direction to staff. The Senior Development Director is accountable for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors through personal contact, direct mail and newsletter campaigns, and online solicitations, fundraising and awareness events, foundation research and grant request writing, planned giving, monthly giving, matching gifts, solicitation of corporate gifts, donor acknowledgement and management of donor records. Promotes the organization in the community to ensure a broad base of funding resources. Serves on the senior management team and has direct access to the Board of Directors to implement all fundraising efforts.
2 Duties and Responsibilities Plan and Implement Resource Development/Fundraising Activities Works with the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Board of Directors, staff and volunteers to implement fundraising plans and support the IHS mission and programs through resource development. Develops and implements annual development plans with budget goals for restricted and reserve funds, grants, direct mail, web-based campaigns, major donor, and enterprise revenue. Prepares reports for administrative staff and Board of Directors for each meeting. Oversees scheduling and production of direct mail solicitation; evaluates and selects donor lists and acquisitions for solicitations. Researches, writes and prepares grant proposals from foundations and corporations. Ensures grant funds are tracked, and completes all required grant reports and documentation is completed on deadline. Develops major gifts and the planned giving program to increase donor base and garner major gifts. Coordinates with CEO and Board to ensure successful requests to donors and prospects. Oversees the relationships with all major grantors and large donors. Develops new sources for major and planned gifts and the capital campaign. Produces marketing collateral for major gift requests and coordinates follow up, including acknowledgements. Creates donor recognition and appreciation programs. In coordination with volunteer committees, plans, oversees and manages annual fundraising events to meet revenue goals. Secures corporate sponsorships, plans printed programs and speakers, and manages logistical aspects of events. Designs and implements opportunities or programs specifically for the corporate or business communities to become more involved with financially supporting the IHS. Develops and implements workplace giving solicitations including corporate employee giving programs, United Way and Combined Federal Campaign. Trains board members in fundraising and attends board meetings as requested by CEO, and assists board members to develop individual action plans and goals to meet their annual board commitment. Acts as organization spokesperson as assigned. Actively promotes IHS programs and services. Understands and promotes the IHS mission and lives the organization s core values. Organize, Develop and Maintain Fundraising Records and Administers Budget Maintains clear, complete and current records on contributions, grants and prospects including acknowledgements, receipts, and proposals. Ensures ongoing integrity of donor database through regular updates, reports, quality assurance of data entry and reviews of acknowledgement letters. Ensures in-kind donation records are maintained and acknowledgments are produced. Maintains and reports information and data for capital campaign giving, major gift-giving, planned giving, direct and web-based mail campaigns, and uses this data to enhance, change, and redirect specific programs or strategies related to these fundraising efforts.
3 Works closely with CEO and CFO to develop departmental budget, grant budgets and bimonthly updated income projections. Assists with writing of annual report. Special Focus Designed To Be Kind Capital Campaign Supports capital and endowment campaign efforts. A priority duty is the execution and successful completion of the organization s current Designed to be Kind Capital Campaign. Responsibilities include coordination of key stakeholders in identifying and securing solicitation meetings, executing or staffing solicitations alongside select campaign volunteers, and following up on solicitations via telephone and written correspondence. The position also oversees the implementation of all day-to-day activities of the campaign, including but not limited to: ongoing correspondence, ongoing follow-up with campaign volunteers, campaign meeting minutes, financial and solicitation reports, etc. Develops, refines, and periodically updates overall capital campaign plan including specific goals, timelines and responsible parties. Maintains a full understanding and ability to articulate the objectives of the campaign and remain current on campaign progress including facility planning and construction. Assists in the management of the capital campaign fundraising budget in concert with the Chief Financial Officer and the Capital Campaign Committee. Collaborative Responsibilities Coordination of Publicity, Marketing, and Public Education Activities Coordinates with the Director of Marketing to create and monitor marketing objectives, strategies, advertising and promotional campaigns of IHS. Works closely with the Marketing Director on design concepts for direct mail, and web-based campaigns. Coordinates with the Communications and Outreach Coordinator in providing strategic vision and direction related to the development and implementation of the Idaho Humane Society s print and visual media communications, the IHS website, public relations and advertising. Work to leverage media to achieve attendance and participation goals in campaigns and events. Coordinates with Director of Marketing and Communications and Outreach Coordinator to develop media strategies, produce press releases and cultivate media contacts to increase positive coverage of the IHS programs, mission and events. Coordinates with the Volunteer Coordinator to recruit and develop volunteers as fundraising resources including donations and support for community events. Coordinates with leadership of all functional groups, including Shelter, Animal Control, Veterinary Medical Center, Volunteer and Foster to promote programs. Understands and articulates all program objectives and accomplishments. Staff Supervision Supervises support staff. Will direct, train and evaluate development team. Supervises, motivates, empowers and conducts periodic reviews of support staff.
4 Recruits with Volunteer Coordinator, supervises and supports volunteers and interns for development department. Actively supports associate staff and volunteers and promotes the development of skills related to the advancement of the goals and mission of the IHS. Provides quality service to staff and volunteers recognizing their individual contributions to the organization and effectively communicates verbally, in writing and electronically with all functional groups. Qualifications Required: o Excellent verbal and written skills as well as organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to be self-motivated and disciplined. o Experience with developing and maintaining productive working relationships with board members, donors, directors and staff. o Proven experience in designing and managing development and donor relations programs. o Ability to work with wide diversity of individuals, including high level corporate executives and managers. o Sincere interest in IHS mission and vision. Desired: o Prior successful experience securing major gifts and managing a planned giving program. o Experience using donor database software. o Working knowledge of social media tools. Education/Training o College degree, preferably in related field such as nonprofit management, marketing, communications, public relations, or business and a minimum of 5 years of proven successful experience in the area of fundraising and development. Working Conditions Indoors in air-conditioned/heated office, outdoors at shelter or on-location for various activities. Regular hours are Monday to Friday a minimum of 40 hours per week; some evening and weekend hours may be required, especially when the IHS hosts special events. May be required to maintain availability when away from the shelter as directed by the CEO/CFO. Limited exposure to animals.
