1 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF PRINCIPAL GIFTS UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND College Park, MD The University advances knowledge, provides outstanding and innovative instruction, and nourishes a climate of intellectual growth in a broad range of academic disciplines and interdisciplinary fields. THE SEARCH -The, Mission Statement The, seeks an executive director for principal gifts to manage its efforts with its highest capacity prospects and to play a central role in leading the entire program to unprecedented levels of success in a new campaign. Reporting to the vice president of university relations, the executive director will partner with an engaged and passionate principal team and convene senior academic and administrative leaders in efforts to secure transformational gifts in support of the university. As the University of Maryland moves forward with planning for a new campaign, the executive director will work with the vice president for university relations, assistant vice president, development, and the university s and division s senior principal teams to enhance the vision and strategy for the development program. The incumbent will interact with trustees, high-level volunteers and academic leaders. The executive director will also manage a portfolio of approximately 30-50, high-capacity, $5M+ prospects and spend 50% of his/her time traveling. At both the institutional and advancement level, the executive director must be able to develop and translate strategy into plans and operations that enable support across all components of the university and particularly at the top end of the giving pyramid. Critical to the success of this effort will be a robust principal gifts program that engages the university s senior administrators to optimize the impact that every donor has on the institution. This person will oversee the process by which principal gift prospects are regularly reviewed and the strategy used to advance them through the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship stages. The ideal candidate will have at least 15 years of experience in the Advancement field or in higher education, with a proven ability to cultivate, solicit and steward gifts at the principal gift level. S/he also must have superlative interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work well with people at all levels of an organization and handle multiple, complex fundraising activities simultaneously.
2 THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND The is the flagship campus of the State of Maryland and one the nation s premier public research universities. The University of Maryland is strategically located nine miles from the nation s capital, Washington, DC, and 30 miles from Baltimore. It is one of 63 members of the prestigious Association of American Universities. The university has 72 programs ranked in the top 25 nationally and attracts over a half-billion dollars annually in sponsored research grants and contracts. The university s diverse community includes almost 27,000 undergraduates, approximately 11,000 graduate students and more than 10,000 faculty and staff members. The University s proximity to the nation s capital has resulted in strong research partnerships with the federal government. Many members of the faculty receive research funding and institutional support from agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Department of Homeland Security. HISTORY Founded in 1856 by a group of planters, the former Maryland Agricultural College required its all-male cadet students to spend an hour a day working on the college farm, to undergo military training and to take courses in ancient and modern languages, natural sciences, English and math. After a disastrous fire in 1912, the state acquired the college and rebuilt it. The military system was soon abolished, and women were welcomed. The campus rapidly grew over the following decades, and the legislature in 1988 combined several institutions of higher education to form the University of System of Maryland. The College Park campus was named its flagship. ACADEMIC PROGRAMS The University creates and applies knowledge, providing outstanding instruction and nourishing a climate of intellectual growth in a broad range of academic disciplines and interdisciplinary fields. -, Mission Statement Through its many schools and colleges, the University offer more that 90 courses of study for undergraduate students. Graduate programs are offered in engineering, business, veterinary medicine, public health, the performing arts, education, library science, the humanities, math, science and the social sciences, among other areas. The University is ranked 19 th among national public universities in US News & World Reports. It also has 25 programs ranked in the top 10 and 72 programs ranked in the top 25 of the magazine s rankings. The University has produced six Nobel laureates, seven Pulitzer Prize winners, more than 40 members of the National Academies, and scores of Fulbright Scholars.
