The Measure Spirometry Program developed by The Benchmarque Group is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge to undertake accurate spirometry within the primary health setting. A core component of diagnosis of COPD is the undertaking of an accurate spirometer. Spirometry is as important for the diagnosis of COPD as blood pressure measurements are for the diagnosis of hypertension. Spirometry should be available to all health care professionals. The Benchmarque Group is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO ) specialising in the development and delivery of nationally accredited clinical skills programs. As an RTO working in the health sector, we focus on the delivery of programs designed to provide nurses and other healthcare professionals with the opportunity to expand their skills and careers. Working in the Vocational Education and Training Sector, we concentrate on skills and knowledge that can be immediately implemented in a vocational context. Skills learnt today can be used tomorrow. The outcome for participants is to gain the skills and knowledge to accurately perform a spirometer and peak flow reading in a variety of settings. Having these skills can lead to significant improvements for client outcomes and safety. 3 Measure Spirometry Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is defined by the World Health Organisation as a preventable and treatable disease state characterised by airflow limitation that is not fully reversible. The airflow limitation is usually progressive and associated with an abnormal inflammatory response of the lungs in response to noxious agents including cigarette smoke, biomass fuels and occupational agents COPD in Australia Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a major cause of disability, hospital admission and premature death. Its is estimated that more than 2 million Australians have COPD. 2 Of those with COPD, it is estimated that 1.2 million have moderate to severe COPD and 900,000 have mild COPD. As the population ages, the burden of COPD is likely to increase. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare estimate that COPD was the seventh greatest contributor to the overall burden of disease, accounting for 3.3% of disability-adjusted life years (DALY) in Having COPD can be a stressful life event and apart from the physical symptoms, a patient may feel depressed, anxious, worried, irritable, isolated and confused. Patient support is all about helping to manage and control symptoms, overcome negative feelings and build confidence again. Smoking is the most important risk factor for COPD. In 2007, 18% of Australian males and 15.2% of Australian females over the age of 18 years smoked daily. 4 Smoking-related diseases have increased substantially in women, and death rates from COPD in women are expected to rise accordingly. The death rate from COPD among indigenous Australians is five times that for non-indigenous Australians, and smoking is a leading cause of healthy years lost by indigenous people both in Australia and New Zealand. COPD costs the Australian community an estimated $8.8 billion annually in financial costs, including health and hospital costs, lost productivity, premature death and lower employment. 5 The challenges posed by the increasing burden of chronic diseases on health systems require development of health service models that have a fundamentally different orientation toward anticipatory and proactive care in addition to acute reactive care not only for individuals with a particular chronic condition (like COPD), but also for individuals with multiple morbidities. 6

4 Measure Spirometry The Measure Spirometry Program developed by The Benchmarque Group is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge to undertake accurate spirometry within the primary health setting. The program uses as it s foundation the current best practice model of care in COPD-X. The COPD-X Plan has been developed by the Australian Lung Foundation and the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand as part of a national COPD program. This Australian and New Zealand guideline is written as a decision support aid primarily for general practitioners and other primary health care clinicians managing people with established COPD. 7 A core component of diagnosis of COPD is the undertaking of an accurate Spirometer. Spirometry is as important for the diagnosis of COPD as blood pressure measurements are for the diagnosis of hypertension. Spirometry should be available to all health care professionals. Spirometry is a simple test to measure the amount of air a person can breathe out, and the amount of time taken to do so. A spirometer is a device used to measure how effectively, and how quickly, the lungs can be emptied.

5 Measure Spirometry The Measure Spirometry Program is delivered as 100% distance based course able to be completed by students within their own time and workplace. On registration for the distance based program, students will be provided with a complete course pack including: Course Folder containing course workbook Written theory assessment Observed activity logbook. 1 DVD containing a series of Video Lectures 1 Textbook Pocket Guide to Spirometry by David P. Johns and Rob Pierce, Third Edition Memory Stick containing Copies of Course Workbook, Assessment Module and additional support material On successful completion of the program, participants will have skills and knowledge in the following three clinical areas: Performing Spirometry Perform Peak Flow Meter Nationally Accredited Unit of Competency in Spirometry The Measure Spirometry Program provides students with the knowledge and skills required to prepare a client for measurement of spirometry and to provide an interpretation as an aid to the diagnosis and management of ventilatory impairment. On successful completion of the unit of competency, participants will be able to demonstrate the following skills and knowledge relevant to measurement of Spirometry: Anatomy and physiology relevant for spirometry measurement Basic pharmacology related to respiratory function relevant for spirometry measurement Complications and contraindications for clients undergoing spirometry measurement Principles and validation techniques of spirometry Protocols for spirometry measurement and conformance to standards Recognition of patterns of normal/abnormal results related to both respiratory disease and technical factors relevant for spirometry measurement

6 Measure Spirometry Self Directed Delivery The current self directed model of delivery allows access to a broader range of students regardless of geographic location and allows people to complete the program at a pace that suits their current lifestyle and workplace balance. The underlying rationale recognises that students are better able to learn when they can control the flow of their experience, or when their learning is self-directed. Onsite Delivery In addition, organisations have an option to book this course as an onsite delivery program. The cost for onsite delivery is $ (Inc GST). This cost includes delivery for a group of up to 12 students including the provision of venue, catering, equipment and assessment. Onsite courses offer organisations the opportunity to book and schedule courses to meet the specific needs of their own staff. Onsite courses booked with The Benchmarque Group can be contextualised to meet the specific needs of your organisation and can be scheduled for a date and time to best suit your staff. On successful completion of this course participants will receive a Nationally Accredited Statement of Attainment for Measure Spirometry (Code HLTHPS004). 7 Frequently Asked Questions When can I start? You can start this course immediately. The program is designed to be 100% self directed. Once you have completed your registration and payment, you will be sent a complete set of course materials including all relevant learning materials, resources and assessment portfolio. Why would I complete a self-directed course? The current self directed model of delivery allows access to a broader range of students regardless of geographic location and allows people to complete the program at a pace that suits their current lifestyle and workplace balance. The underlying rationale recognises that students are better able to learn when they can control the flow of their experience, or when their learning is self-directed. Who do I talk to if I have a question? The Benchmarque Group has an allocated program manager for this course. At any time during your study you can them directly at spirometry@benchmarquegroup.com.au and receive an reply or request a call back. Or if you prefer, you can call The Benchmarque Group on , Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm and we can help you over the phone. Will I need to do a test? Yes. As a nationally accredited course, we are required to gain evidence of your competency. Included in the materials we supply is an assessment portfolio. This portfolio needs to be completed and returned to The Benchmarque Group for assessment. Do I need access to a Spirometer? Yes. It is important that you have access to a Spirometer to complete your log book activity. The log book activity is designed to be completed within your workplace using workplace equipment. How long does the program take to complete? The program will require approximately 40 hours of study including essential reading, external reading and completion of the assessment portfolio. The assessment portfolio also requires you to undertake some workplace based activities.

8 Frequently Asked Questions What do I receive at the completion of the program? At the completion of the program, successful students will receive a nationally accredited statement of attainment for Measure Spirometry. A nationally recognised statement of attainment lists the individual unit or units of competency that a student has completed. It is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). What is observed practice? Observed practice is when a student demonstrates within their workplace, skills and knowledge learned as a part of a course or program. The observer s role is to confirm the transfer of skills to the workplace not to assess competency. As a Registered Training Organisation, we are required to gather evidence of a student s ability to transfer skills and knowledge from the classroom environment to the work environment. We use workplace observation as evidence of this transfer. Do I need a doctor to observe my practice? No. Whilst a doctor would be an ideal observer, the requirement is that your observer is of equal qualification to you or above. For example, an enrolled nurse cannot observe the work of a registered nurse, but an enrolled nurse can observe the work of another enrolled nurse. This is why we refer to this process as peer observation. How do you gain evidence of competency? You are required to complete the assessment portfolio including short answer questions as well as submitting a completed logbook and workplace based activity. We assess competency in 2 ways. You are required to complete the theory assessment online via The Benchmarque Group Website or submit a written assessment and you are required to undertake observed practice in your workplace. How long do I have to complete the assessment? We encourage you to complete your assessment within 16 weeks of receiving your learning package, however, you have up to 12 months to submit it. During this time, we will send you some friendly reminders. What if I cannot complete the assessment? If you are unable to complete your assessment, contact us and we may be able to assist you.

9 The Fine Print... The Benchmarque Group Pty Limited delivers a range of nationally accredited courses and unit of competency programs. These are collectively referred to as our courses. Course Confirmation - Along with this application, you may have received a tax invoice for your course. The tax invoice acts as a confirmation of the receipt of your registration. This invoice will indicate the total cost required for participation, full payment of the tax invoice is required to guarantee your participation in the course. Cancellation, Refund and Transfer - If a student cancels their registration; they will need to provide notice in writing prior to the commencement of the course. Should notification be received 14 days or more prior to the course commencing, The Benchmarque Group Pty Limited will refund 90% of your course fee. Should notification be received less than 14 days prior to the course commencing, no refund will be provided. If a student is unable to attend a course a substitute student may take their place at no additional cost. Enrolled students who fail to attend without notification will not be entitled to a refund. Transfers to other course can be organised. Please provide notice in writing at least 14 days prior to the commencement of the course to allow time for transfer. A $10.00 course transfer fee may be incurred. The Benchmarque Group Pty Limited will make appropriate financial arrangements to guarantee the refund of course fees when:! The course is cancelled or discontinued; or! The customer has a acceptable reason for discontinuing the course (e.g. medical). Alternatively, a substitute course or date may be offered and mutually agreed on. Record Keeping and Access to Records - The Benchmarque Group Pty Limited will keep a record of your participation in secure, confidential storage, including copies of any relevant qualification, statement of attainment or certificate of Attendance you have obtained. As the student you are able to access this information at any time on request. When you contact The Benchmarque Group Pty Limited, you will be required to establish your identity by answering some questions regarding your original registration. Please allow up to five (5) working days for The Benchmarque Group Pty Limited to retrieve your documents from our archive system. Certificates - On the successful completion of your course, The Benchmarque Group Pty Limited will issue you with a qualification, statement of attainment, or certificate of attendance depending on the course you have completed. This will include your name, completion date, and the name of the qualification, unit of competency/s or course achieved. Should you fail to meet the minimum requirements of a course, you will be provided with two (2) additional opportunities to re-submit course/program work, submit additional evidence, or demonstrate competence as part of your course/program fee. Additional opportunities remain at the discretion of the individual facilitator. Nationally recognised qualifications are issued when you are assessed as competent in a nationally recognised qualification. Nationally recognised statements of attainment are issued when you are competent in units of competency, but less than the amount for a full qualification. Certificates of attendance are issued for industry training that is useful for your employment, but not part of the nationally recognised training system. Qualifications and statements of attainment issued by The Benchmarque Group Pty Limited are recognised throughout Australia by other Registered Training Organisations, so, if you choose to undertake further course, your training with us may give you recognised prior learning into other course. Revocation of a Qualification or Statement of Attainment - The Benchmarque Group Pty Limited may revoke a qualification or statement of attainment should it be deemed that it was obtained as a result of misleading or deceptive conduct, issued in error by The Benchmarque Group Pty Limited, or as directed by ASQA. Qualifications or statements of attainment may also be revoked if the participant is unable to provide full payment for the completed course, on the basis that all reasonable efforts have been made to receipt payment. A final notice of revocation will be issued, providing a period of fourteen (14) days to remit payment for the full amount. Complaints and Assessment Appeals - Students who undertake courses offered by The Benchmarque Group Pty Limited retain the right to lodge complaints about the service received and to lodge appeals against decisions made regarding competency. The Benchmarque Group Pty Limited will respond personally to any written complaint made by a customer within five (5) working days of receipt. The complaint will then be investigated and resolved in a timely manner and the outcome will be advised appropriately. A full copy of our Complaints and Assessment Appeals Policy is available on request. Access and Equity - The Benchmarque Group Pty Limited will ensure every attempt is made to allow access to our courses for every individual regardless of disability and in accordance with equal opportunity legislation. The Benchmarque Group Pty Limited also ensures that at all times customers are treated in an ethical and responsible manner that is consistent with the principles of social justice.
