1 Sexual & Reproductive Health Western Australia 2015 Pap Smear Provider Course The Pap Smear Provider Course develops the essential knowledge and skills required for nurses to provide Pap smears and preventive health checks for women on behalf of a supporting doctor. Enrolled Nurses and Aboriginal Health Workers with appropriate skills and experience are also eligible to attend. The course meets the National Standards for Nurse Pap Smear Providers. Preventive health issues included in the Pap Smear Provider Course: Taking a women s health history Screening for chlamydia Breast awareness education Continence advice and education The Pap Smear Provider Course does not cover: Advice on contraception or postnatal issues Taking a full sexual history Checks for sexually transmitted infection other than chlamydia and gonorrhoea Course Content Pap Smear Provider (PSP) 3.5 day theory (25 hours) Cervical Screening HPV and cancer of the cervix; guidelines for screening; Pap smear procedure and pelvic examination; cytology and laboratory reporting; notification and management of results; management of women with abnormal smears. Pap Smear Consultations Taking a women s health history and brief risk assessment; documentation; legal and ethical issues; nurse Pap smear provider role and scope of practice; clinical practice session. Preventive Health Issues for Women Chlamydia screening; continence; menopause; breast health Women s Health Issues Vaginal infections; common gynaecological problems The Pap Smear Provider Course is designed for working with well women only, and assumes that the supporting doctor is available for immediate referral if any abnormalities are detected, and to manage any issues outside the nurse s scope of practice. Wherever possible, nurses providing cervical screening are encouraged to complete further modules from the theory component of the Certificate in Sexual and Reproductive Health (Nursing), in order to be able to provide more comprehensive and holistic sexual health nursing care. The Nuts and Bolts of Sexual Health and the STI Clinical Management module in particular are recommended. The Pap Smear Provider Course can be counted towards completion of the Certificate in Sexual and Reproductive Health at a later date. The Pap Smear Provider Course consists of a theory component of 25 contact hours plus self directed learning and a clinical component of a minimum of 20 hours. All participants completing both components of the Pap Smear Provider Course will be entitled to a certificate from SRHWA, and Registered and Enrolled Nurses are also eligible to apply for the Certificate of Competence as a Nurse Pap Smear Provider from the WA Cervical Cancer Prevention Program (WACCPP). Pap Smear Provider Theory Dates: 23 rd - 26 th February th - 28 th May st August - 3 rd September 2015 Venue: srhwa, 70 Roe St, Northbridge Cost: Prerequisite: $700 GST free (Only valid for 2015 courses) Before course commencement, pre-reading and activities are required approx 6 hrs

2 Pap Smear Provider Course Clinical Practicum All participants require a minimum of 15 Pap smears, and at least 20 hours of supervised clinical practice, plus demonstrated competence, to meet the National Standards for Nurse Pap Smear Providers and complete the Pap Smear Provider Course. Practicum Options Placement at SRHWA The full clinical practicum at SRHWA is 21 hours - made up by six clinics with a duration of 3.5 hours each at the SRHWA clinic in Northbridge. Participants are supervised at all times by experienced SRHWA Registred Nurses who have been trained in clinical instruction. Note: Placements need to be booked at least six to eight weeks beforehand. Details on booking the practicum will be discussed during the theory component of the course. Please note: All assignments due must be submitted before commencing clinical practicum. Rescheduling of clinical practicums after confirmation will incur a fee of $80.00 Costs: $480 (or $80 per clinic) GST free Placements are limited - bookings need to be made early with: Clinic Administration Officer clinic.adminofficer@srhwa.com.au Supervision by an SRHWA nurse in their own workplace SRHWA instructing nurses may also be available to supervise nurses in their own workplace. The workplace is responsible for organising specific Pap smear clinics and booking all clients. Pap smears and preventive health checks are conducted on behalf of a supervising doctor whose Provider A nurse with existing skills and experience in women s health and cervical screening (or who is able to obtain clinical experience in their workplace after attending the theory component) may contact the Nurse Educator to discuss an accelerated clinical practicum. There is a minimum of 7 hours clinical practice under direct supervision of an SRHWA nurse or SRHWA-approved preceptor. Number is used for pathology purposes. This doctor is responsible for the overall care and follow-up of the clients. Nurses wishing to choose this option must contact the Nurse Educator to negotiate the number of hours. This depends on the competency already achieved by the nurse. A minimum of 7 hours is required. Costs: $80.00 per hour, plus travel and accommodation expenses. Supervision by external SRHWA-approved preceptors A few nurses outside SRHWA who are experienced in sexual health and cervical screening and trained in clinical instruction have been approved by SRHWA as clinical preceptors. Participants wishing to do some clinical practicum with an approved external preceptor must first discuss their plans with the Nurse Educator. They can then contact the preceptor/s directly to arrange mutually suitable times for clinical placement. Completing part of the clinical practicum at SRHWA is strongly recommended, as is working with more than one preceptor. Costs: There is a $ administration fee for the clinical placement to be completed entirely externally with non- SRHWA preceptors. Signature: Date: Fees and Refunds Policy An applicant s place in a course is not confirmed until SRHWA has received full payment of course fees. Course fees must be paid in full at least four (4) weeks prior to the course starting. Payment may need to be made earlier to secure a place in a course in high demand. A course will be cancelled (or the dates changed) if minimum numbers have not been confirmed four weeks prior to the course start. Course cancellations or changes in dates will be notified as soon as possible and a full refund made. Participants are advised not to book travel arrangements until they are notified the course has been confirmed. Refunds A cancellation for a course must be given in writing. If cancellation notice is received by us: More than four weeks prior to the course/workshop starting then a full refund less an administration charge (of $50, or $100 if the course fees are greater than $500) will be made. Less than four weeks prior to the course/workshop starting no refund will be made - unless there is a waiting list for the course/workshop and the place is filled, in which case a full refund minus the above administration charge will be made. Deferment to a later date is treated the same as a cancellation. Substitution: A substitute may be nominated to attend in place of a participant after payment of the above administration charge (provided that there is adequate time for the substitute to complete any pre-course requirements). An application for a refund will be considered in exceptional circumstances. Any request for special consideration should be made in writing to the Manager of Education and Training.
