3 Welcome from Professor Martin Griffin Dear applicant I am delighted that you are considering applying for this position at what is a particularly exciting time for Aston University and an incredibly challenging time for the Higher Education (HE) Sector. The sector is currently experiencing an unprecedented scale and pace of change, combined with a high degree of ambiguity and uncertainty. The Research Support Office (RSO) plays a central role in supporting staff to achieve excellence in their research. The RSO provides strategy and planning support for the University s Research Excellence Framework (REF) submissions, working in collaboration with Schools to ensure that every effort is taken to maximise our REF returns. Our team of Research Development Managers work across academic Schools to provide dedicated research funding support; this successful approach has led to an increase in our research award levels from 11m in 2008/09 to 17m in 2012/13. We are now looking to appoint someone who will build upon this success. I believe that Aston is well-positioned for the challenges that lie ahead for HE. 4 The Research Support Office (RSO) The Research Support Office (RSO), in conjunction with the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, is a key component in the delivery of the University Research Strategy. Working across the Schools a team of Research Development Managers and a European Funding Manager support staff in the development of high quality research bids targeting a range of UK, European and international funding agencies. The RSO also provides support for contract negotiation, and supports the development of research policy within the University through active engagement with the Research Executive group and the University Research Committee. In addition the office has responsibility for the Research Excellence Framework, and as part of this responsibility manages the PURE Current Research Information System, which is used by staff across the University. The RSO works closely with other central services such as the Business Partnership Unit, the Finance Department, the Development and Alumni Relations Office and Marketing and Communications to ensure that research-related support is joined up across the University. RSO employs an effective team-based approach to deliver a range of support for researchers, from one-toone advice, training courses, bespoke workshops, an e-zine and informative intranet site. The office prides itself on its excellent reputation for high quality support, earned through providing a responsive service, which listens and responds to its customers needs. Trends in Research Income Despite the challenging economic environment for research funding, we have continued to see a healthy growth in our overall research funding levels. Our recent successes include a large growth in EU awards, with that funding stream set to increase further in the current year. 6 Job description The Strategic Development Manager will lead the development of strategic research initiatives for Aston University. This will involve supporting the development of new partnerships and collaborations and developing proposals to nationally-funded schemes such as the HEFCE Catalyst Scheme, the PIF scheme, Research Council Doctoral Training Schemes and other large initiatives from Research Councils and national charities. There will also be a focus on the development of relationships with Trusts, working jointly with the Development and Alumni Relations Office. This will entail developing and implementing strategies and writing bid applications to secure major donations from trusts and foundations worldwide against annual income and activity targets. The Strategic Development Manager will work across all Schools to develop new initiatives, liaising with external partners, funding bodies and sponsors as required. The collaboration and liaison with external and internal partners is an essential part of the role. Responsibilities To lead on the development of strategic research initiatives for Aston University in line with the University s Aston 2020 strategy and beyond: To develop a prioritised action plan for strategic funding opportunities available to Aston through a clear understanding of the funds available. Working with Schools, align this with University priorities in a Strategic Development plan. To liaise with academic staff, funder and partner organisations to build relationships and establish partnerships and collaborations as appropriate. In response to open and time bound calls for funding proposals to lead on and project-manage the development of proposals, drawing in other contributions from across the University and externally as required. Develop best practice content suitable for strategic proposals. Work as a member of the Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO) to access funding from Charities and Trusts: Establish relationships with Trusts & Foundations worldwide to secure significant income streams for research. Build rapport with senior influential members of boards of trusts etc. Identify and coordinate applications to philanthropic funding bodies in support of research. Research and prepare funding proposals for Trusts & Foundations in particular to support the University research strategy. Prepare progress reports for trust & foundation donors and steward appropriately for the gift. Any other duties commensurate with the level and aims of this post.

8 Salary & benefits This post is offered on a full-time, continuing basis. The appointment is Grade 9 and the salary range for this grade is 38,511 to 45,954 per annum. Holiday entitlement Pension Contribution pay Relocation 30 days per annum, in addition to 13 days public and university holidays. Eligible staff are offered a defined benefit pension with the University Superannuation Scheme. The University s Performance Development and Reward Scheme provides for salary enhancement for staff who are considered to be performing at an exceptional level on a consistent basis.
