As shwn belw (left), the BB&T Building has tw sectins, a high-rise ffice twer segment and a runded parking garage. The address is shwn n the building (belw, right), near the Suth Cllege Street parking entrance. As yu make yur way arund uptwn Charltte, it is useful t knw that the city is laid ut in a grid. Typically, numbered streets run east-west and streets that run nrth-suth have prper names. Yu can determine, frm any directin, where yu are standing in relatin t the middle f uptwn intersectin f Trade and Tryn Streets. The numbered part f any address is designated relative t the 000 starting pint f address numbers at Trade and Tryn Streets. 1

2 This imprtant Trade/Tryn intersectin, named Independence Square (belw, right and left), is easily identified by the 4 upper-bdy statues, ne at each crner f the intersectin. Technically, the street grid is aligned at a 45-degree angle relative t the cmpass. Nrth" and suth streets fficially g nrtheast and suthwest and east and west rutes truly run sutheast and nrthwest thugh they are named as nrth r suth f Trade Street, and east r west f Tryn Street. Whether nrth/ suth r east/west, building address numbers increase as they mve away frm the central Independence Square. Suth Cllege Street is ne-way, heading frm the runded garage tward the main twer f the BB&T Building. The center f twn can be fund 2.5 blcks away, half a blck t the right f the BB&T (as pictured n Page 1), then 1 blck t the left, then 1 blck t the right. Thugh htel receptin desks generally prvide lcal maps fr guests wh request them, click HERE and HERE fr useful uptwn Charltte maps fr cnsultatin as yu make yur travel plans. 2) Parking in the BB&T Building Early bird parking is available fr $10 (fr parkers wh enter the parking garage befre 8:30 a.m.). The maximum, regular parking fee is $20 per day (belw, left). One entrance t the BB&T parking garage (belw, right, in red bx) is n the ne-way Suth Cllege Street, just after passing thrugh the Suth Cllege Street/East 3rd Street intersectin. 3 A secnd entrance t the BB&T parking garage is accessed frm East 4th Street, a ne-way street that brders the BB&T Building and is perpendicular t Suth Cllege Street. This garage entrance invlves veering ff t the left, int the garage tunnel (pictured belw, left, in red val). When the large bwling alley pin, the AT&T sign, and the Firehuse Subs sign are in sight n East 4th Street befre crssing Suth Cllege Street, be prepared t swing left int this parking tunnel. A third garage entrance is als accessed frm East 4th Street, just after crssing Suth Cllege Street, and again requires a left turn int the garage pening (pictured belw, right, in red val). This building cntains three distinct sets f elevatrs fr public use, which include the fllwing: 1 set (4 elevatrs) f parking garage elevatrs service the parking garage ONLY. These elevatrs d NOT take passengers t the NCCTO. These elevatrs can be accessed directly frm the garage n Flrs 2 and 4-11 and in special ways n Flr 1 (street level) and Flr 3 (Overstreet Mall level). The Flr 1 parking garage elevatr bank (belw, left) is adjacent t the Security Statin a shrt distance frm the frnt BB&T Building lbby at Suth Cllege Street level. The Flr 3 parking garage elevatr bank (belw, right) pens int the Overstreet Mall, right acrss the Mall hallway frm McDnald s restaurant. 4 2 identical sets f high-rise elevatrs (6 elevatrs per set, 12 high-rise elevatrs ttal) service the ffice flrs ONLY (NOT parking garage flrs) f the BB&T. One set services the lwer flrs f the BB&T Building and is marked 1-13 (r 2-13, n the first flr) and will nt be f use t NCCTO candidates. The ther set ascends t the higher flrs and is designated NCCTO candidates will use the grup f high-rise elevatrs. These elevatrs can be accessed n Flr 1 and Flr 3, either f which will take candidates t the NCCTO n Flr 20 during the wrk week. (On Saturdays, nly the Flr 1 set will take candidates t the NCCTO; see special Saturday sectin HERE). On Flr 1, the carpeted high-rise elevatr bank (belw, left) at Suth Cllege Street level ges t the upper flrs, On Flr 3, the tiled high-rise elevatr bank (belw, right) n the Overstreet Mall level accesses the upper flrs, First-flr access t high-rise elevatrs t Third-flr access t high-rise elevatrs t upper flrs; nte the carpet n Flr 1 upper flrs; nte the tile n Flr 3 Thugh the 1 garage elevatr bank and the 2 high-rise elevatr banks (1-13 and 14-22) are lcated very clse t each ther within the BB&T Building, their functins and destinatins are ttally separate and are nt interchangeable. Candidates must NEVER attempt t access the NCCTO thrugh use f the building stairwells! Entry drs t the flrs are kept lcked t ft traffic at all times except during emergencies! 4) The Multiple Entrances t the BB&T Building a) Fr Candidates Wh Park in the BB&T Building parking garage: Candidates ultimately will head fr a high-rise elevatr t the NCCTO n Flr 20 after entering the BB&T Building thrugh ne f the fllwing BB&T Building s parking garage entrances: If yu cme in thrugh the East 4th Street tunnel garage entrance and chse the center entry lane, yu may enter the BB&T Building thrugh the Flr 1 dr (left) assuming a parking spt is available n Flr 1. The Security Statin is just beynd this glass entry dr. This is an excellent parking chice fr Saturday candidates, wh unlike weekday candidates, must check in with Security prir t ascending t the 20th flr NCCTO. Each parking garage entrance t the BB&T Building has its wn unique appearance (paint clr r rainbw tile wall). Candidates shuld nte the garage flr number and entryway appearance fr easy return t their vehicles fllwing their CSEs. 4

5 If yu park n Flr 2 r Flrs 4-11, yu will enter the BB&T Building thrugh a different-clred parking garage deck elevatr bank (as shwn belw). Take ne f the 4 parking garage elevatrs t Flr 1 r Flr 3 and find the nearby high-rise elevatr t the NCCTO n Flr 20. (Saturday candidates MUST g t Flr 1 ONLY and take the high-rise elevatr frm there.) Candidates wh park n Flr 3 f the BB&T parking garage will enter the building thrugh 1 f the 2 third-flr parking deck s rainbw drs. Enter the drs (belw left); turn right; pass Merle Nrman; and immediately turn left at the high-rise elevatrs. OR, enter the drs (belw, right); turn left; pass McDnald s n yur right (ignre the parking elevatrs n the left); and turn right at the high-rise elevatrs. Use the elevatr bank marked Flrs 14 22; the NCCTO is n the 20th flr. b) Fr Candidates Wh Walk in thrugh the Frnt Drs: T enter the BB&T Building frm the frnt f the building at street level, yu will find the entrance drs in the middle f the Suth Cllege Street blck n which the building sits. Tw pairs f frnt drs can be fund rughly in the middle f the building at street level; their general lcatin can be seen in the picture f the BB&T Building (belw, left; drs are within the red val). These frnt drs (belw, middle) are lcated between the cncrete beams (belw, right, within the red bx). The dr buzzer (visible in the green circle belw, right) is used during Saturday Security check-in. 5

6 Once yu enter the building at street level, yu will see the tw first-flr carpeted banks f high-rise elevatrs in the small BB&T lbby (left). Chse an elevatr in the grup marked and take it t the 20th Flr t reach the NCCTO within the BB&T Building. Students wh stay at the Crwne Plaza have n useful access t the Overstreet Mall and therefre, almst surely will enter the BB&T Building at street level since they mst likely will walk a straight path t the BB&T Building r take the htel shuttle t the frnt dr. c) Fr Candidates Wh Walk t the NCCTO thrugh the Overstreet Mall: When the BB&T Building is entered n the Overstreet Mall level, yu will have accessed the building n the third flr. When appraching the BB&T Building via the indr Overstreet Mall frm the nrthernmst ldging facilities such as the Dunhill Htel, Hliday Inn, r Hyatt Huse, yu nearly will have reached yur destinatin when yu see the small rectangular wall BB&T sign n yur right (shwn abve) that indicates yu are entering the BB&T Building n Flr 3. Shrtly thereafter, yu will pass the Merle Nrman shp n yur left (shwn t the right, in green bx) n yur way t the high-rise elevatrs. OR, if yu are heading fr the NCCTO via the Overstreet Mall frm the suthernmst ldgings, such as the Residence Inn, Hamptn Inn, Hiltn Garden Inn, Hiltn Charltte Center City, r the Marritt Curtyard, yur indr rute will bring yu frm the cvered BB&T garage and the suthernmst set f the previusly described rainbw drs (belw). Once yu pass thrugh these duble glass drs, yu will have entered the BB&T Building n the third-flr Overstreet Mall level. Fllw the hallway t the left, pass McDnald s n yur right (shwn, right, in green val). Pass parking garage elevatrs n the left (blue arrw) and cntinue straight frward t the high-rise elevatrs (red arrw) dwn the hall, n the right. 6

7 In summary, candidates n the third-flr Overstreet Mall will apprach the BB&T Building s high-rise elevatrs: ¾ frm the nrthernmst htels, via the indr Mall hallways, after passing Merle Nrman; OR ¾ frm the suthernmst htels, after entering the suthernmst set f rainbw drs and passing McDnald s; OR ¾ after parking n the Flr 3 BB&T garage and then entering the Mall thrugh either set f rainbw drs (ne clse t Merle Nrman, the ther clser t McDnald s); OR ¾ frm the nearby third-flr parking garage elevatr bank, after parking n Flrs 1-2 r Exit yur parking elevatr; exit the parking garage elevatr bank; turn left as yu lk straight acrss the hall at McDnald s (pictured n Page 6, bttm right); and prceed t the high-rise elevatrs just up the Overstreet Mall hallway, n the right. All candidates wh apprach the BB&T s third-flr high-rise elevatrs will pass either Merle Nrman r McDnald s and cme ut at the Overstreet Mall elevatr lbby. The Third-Flr Overstreet Mall-Level Elevatr Lbby All candidates n the third-flr Overstreet Mall level f the BB&T Building will arrive at the three carved-stne murals (left) as they enter the BB&T third-flr lbby with its tw sets f tiled high-rise elevatr banks (right). An elevatr in the grup f 6 elevatrs designated (right, in green circle) will take candidates t the NCCTO n the 20th Flr. Frm this Overstreet Mall Flr 3 high-rise elevatr lbby (tp, right), a lk ONE WAY (shwn t the right, middle) gives a view tward the high-rise elevatrs (red arrw), Merle Nrman shp (blue arrw), and the nrthernmst rainbw dr cming in frm the third-flr parking deck (green arrw).
