2 Overview The American Society of Mechanical Engineer s Human Powered Vehicle Challenge is an annual competition that allows engineering students from different universities to design and manufacture land, air, and water vehicles. This competition is used as a capstone project for the graduating mechanical engineering students at Portland State University. The Vike Trike (PSU s competing HPV design team) will be competing in the single rider land vehicle class of the ASME HPV Challenge. Unbeknownst to most cycle enthusiasts, the recumbent cycle is by far the fastest and most efficient human powered land vehicle. In fact, the land speed record of 81 mph was set by Sam Wittingham of Canada, which was recorded by the International Human Powered Vehicle Association. The record speed was achieved using a recumbent bike with an aerodynamic covering, or fairing. Last year was the first time that PSU had entered the competition in over a decade. Utilizing the recumbent style, fairing, and lighter materials, the PSU HPV team hopes to improve on our 3rd place finish in last year s competition. As budding engineers, one of our team s biggest challenges is budget. The major costs in the project are the materials that comprise the HPV and manufacturing that cannot be completed in the PSU machine shop. The ideal HPV is light, aerodynamic, comfortable, and safe. With these design goals in mind, materials must be selected with properties that will meet our design specifications and fit within our budget. With your support, the design will supersede the budget constraints as the determining factor in the Vike Trike s performance.

3 Event Details The ASME HPV Competition is held annually in the spring at a competing university. This year the NASA-AMES Research Center in Sunnyvale CA will be hosting the competition. The competition will consist of three different categories: Vehicle Design, Sprint Challenge, and Endurance Challenge. Vehicle Design Competition: Officials are interested in the design process that engineering teams follow to produce their vehicles. Judges will conduct design judging separate from and without regard to vehicle performance on the test course with an emphasis on originality and soundness of the design. Judging will be based on: a written report, an oral presentation, and examination of the vehicle. Sprint Challenge: The sprint event will include single and multi-rider vehicles and will be a flying start sprint race. Each team will have the preceding distance of 300 to 400 meters for the vehicles to gain speed before entering the timed zone, which will be followed by a 100 meter timed portion straight-away, as well as a minimum of 200 meters at the end to allow the vehicles to slow down. Endurance Challenge: The endurance event is one in which competitors will race in a grand prix style road race of approximately 65 kilometers (40 miles). Vehicles must start the race with a female rider(s) who must complete at least 5 kilometers. No individual can compete in the vehicle for more than 20 kilometers, and all laps by any individual must be continuous. When the lead vehicle crosses the finish line, each team will be allowed to finish the lap it is on to end the competition. In addition to student competitors, representatives from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers will be on hand to judge and run the competition. The event draws many who are interested to see new and groundbreaking HPV designs.

This year s team has been active in volunteering with community organizations, such as Oregon Food Bank and MESA, with plans for further involvement. It is the team s belief that advancement of human powered vehicle technology will benefit society and the environment while addressing issues of personal transportation. Name-Branding Depending on level of sponsorship, your company s name and logo will be sized for display on the Vike Trike fairing and possibly a team uniform. All sponsors will appear on every page of our team website and back of team t-shirt. As a contributor, you will be able to advertise yourself as a sponsor for the Vike Trike. Target Marketing Whether you aim to market to HPV riders, engineers, college students, or cycle enthusiasts in general, sponsorship of the Vike Trike will provide you a good opportunity. Product Placement Any material donations will be featured on the Vike Trike s website. This will include pictures of team testing and implementation of our design with use of your product. One aspect of the Vike Trike website is to educate the public about human powered vehicles. The website will have information to recognize the components used in the design with links directing readers to the company website. Tax-Deductible Contribution Both monetary and material donations for sponsorship will be directed through Portland State University, and as such are tax-deductible.
