2 What is Baja SAE? Sponsored by SAE International, Baja SAE was founded in 1976 and has since grown to become a premier intercollegiate design series. The goal of the competition is to give real world experience in design, manufacturing and marketing through the production of an off-road vehicle. Students control every aspect of the process, from design to fabrication to team management and marketing. Their only constraints are a ten horsepower Briggs and Stratton Intek Model 20 engine, which all teams must use, and funding. At the end of the academic year, there are three competitions (West, Midwest and East) where teams from across the country and around the world compete for the title of best vehicle. The competitions consist of static events, such as technical inspection, design presentations and cost reports, as well as dynamic events, such as maneuverability, suspension/traction, sled pull, mud-bog, acceleration and the signature four hour endurance race that pushes vehicles to their limits. About the CWRU Baja SAE Team The competition season marks Case Western Reserve University s thirteenth consecutive year of participation in the collegiate design series. Since 2001, the CWRU Baja team has been known for creative designs that challenged conventional thinking, such as the first implementation of a mid-engine vehicle in the Baja competition. The team works year round on design, manufacturing, and testing, to prepare for competitions. In recent years the team has focused on designing cars that use high performance materials to be both durable and lightweight. 3 In addition to attending the national competition, CWRU Baja plans to attend an additional regional event this year, the University of Louisville s Midnight Mayhem. Regional events exist to give local Baja teams the chance to train drivers and test new ideas before going to a national event, providing a critical advantage to teams that attend them. For this season s vehicle design, the CWRU Baja team aims to improve on previous designs by improving the steering and suspension geometry and making improvements to the drivetrain of previous designs, while cutting weight and bulk. New components will be extensively tested on the team s older vehicles to ensure quality performance before they are integrated into this year s car. Additional focus will be given to making the car durable, which is important for allowing the car to last the entire endurance race. The vehicle will be made lightweight by utilizing high-strength aluminum and fiber composites. Finally, there is an emphasis on making the vehicle highly serviceable, facilitating hot-pit repairs when something does inevitably break. 2 C W R U B a j a S A E T e a m S p o n s o r s h i p P a c k a g e

4 Benefits for Students The CWRU Baja program benefits students in a variety of ways. Students are able to experience the managerial, financial and logistical problems of working on an engineering problem. Baja provides a platform for students to apply and combine the knowledge they have gained in their classwork at CWRU, as well as an opportunity to work with other people that have a variety of skill sets. At each competition students are given the opportunity to interact with engineers from around the world. In addition to this experience, Baja maintains a strong Alumni connection to past members. This gives current students an unparalleled opportunity to communicate with Alumni on issues relating to Baja, as well as engineering opportunities after CWRU. The Baja SAE Collegiate Design Series is well known and respected as an indication of engineering students ability to work out and solve real world problems. Engineering firms look favorably upon engineering experience and Baja provides students with an opportunity to solve a real life engineering problem. This provides younger team members with an advantage when looking for internships and cooperative experiences, while enhancing the prospects of upperclassmen when looking for full time jobs or graduate schools. Benefits of Sponsorship By sponsoring CWRU Baja you will help educate and train the next generation of engineers. Our engineering team members gain valuable experience in design, analysis, and develop knowledge of machining and fabricating methods that companies look for when hiring interns, coops, and full time employees. While SAE sponsors like Briggs & Stratton provide the engine for every team s vehicle, each Baja team is responsible for the funding of all other components. Last year CWRU Baja spent over $11,000 just to build the vehicle, and roughly $12,000 to attend competitions. To help offset these costs, CWRU Baja is currently seeking for sponsorships in the form of monetary donations, part donations, discounts, or any other form of sponsorship your company is willing to contribute to the team. 5 Sponsorship Levels Sponsor-For donating any amount, your organization will receive: Your organization s name and a linked logo on our website Bronze-For donating at least $500 or an equivalent number of parts/services, your organization will receive the base level benefits in addition to: A small logo on one of the car s body panels Silver-For donating at least $1000 or an equivalent number of parts/services, your organization will receive the bronze level benefits in addition to: A medium logo on one of the car s body panels (replaces the small logo) Personalized thank you plaque Gold-For donating at least $2500 or an equivalent number of parts/services, your organization will receive the silver level benefits in addition to: A large logo on one of the car s body panels (replaces the medium logo) An invitation to our Sponsors Day, allowing your organization to witness the car in action and get to know the team Platinum-For donating at least $5000 or an equivalent number of parts/services, your organization will receive the silver level benefits in addition to An interactive driving day, allowing members of your organization to try their skills at driving the CRWU Baja cars.
