How do I get 24/7 Card Access to the Ware Lab? o Login to Scholar Click on the Courses tab/link Search for the Ware Lab Course Pass the Safety Quiz (under Assignments) with at least an 85% Go to: Print out the waiver portion of the survey Sign the waiver (You will need to take this to the Hokie Passport Office in the next step!) Complete the rest of the survey o Advisor: Dr. West o Go to the Hokie Passport Office at the Student Services Building: Remember to take the waiver you printed out and signed Remember to take your old badge if you have one from the past year (avoids the $5.00 fee!) Fill out the Ware Lab Card Access Form Affiliation: Formula SAE Pay $5.00 for a new badge (Cash or check only) Get your Ware Lab Badge, and post it on the cage with the other team member s badges Your Hokie Passport should have 24/7 Access to the Ware Lab Project Bay Areas

How do I get Ware Lab Machine Shop Certification? o Make sure you have passed ISE 2214 (Manufacturing Processes Lab) with at least a B+ o Sign up on the sheet on the Ware Lab Machine Shop Door The certification session is 1-hour long. Signup sheets are typically on the Machine Shop door. It is offered at multiple times per week. You can attend as many sessions as you need to get your certification. You need to bring the following to the certification class: Your Ware Lab Badge (See Question #1) Safety Glasses (Available from the Formula SAE Bay) Calipers (Available from the Formula SAE Bay) Short-sleeve shirt Long pants As of Fall 2010, to gain certification, your assignment is to manufacture two simple parts. Best tip to save time: Measure twice, cut once. Follow any additional directions given to you after you pass the course to gain certification o Send an to Brice Collamer ([email protected]), the 2012 VT Motorsports Team Leader with the following information when you obtain your certification Name of the certification you just obtained Your Full Name Your PID Your Student ID # 3. How do I get Ware Lab Welding Certification? o Make sure you have passed ISE 2214 (Manufacturing Processes Lab) with at least a B+ o The Ware Lab Welding Certification Course typically takes enrollment just before course request for the upcoming semester. Stay in touch with the Team about when to sign up. o The Certification course is BSE 3494, Advanced Welding Technology, and is a 1-credit class made available to Ware Lab Project Teams o Send an to Brice Collamer ([email protected]), the 2012 VT Motorsports Team Leader with the following information when you obtain your certification Name of the certification you just obtained Your Full Name Your PID Your Student ID #

7 4. How do I access VT Motorsports through Scholar? o Login to Scholar ( o Click on the Memberships Link o Click on Joinable Sites Link o Search for Formula SAE, and join the site 5. What professional memberships will I need? o Become a Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Student Member Go to Click on the Membership link Click on the Join link Fill out the information necessary to get a student membership Costs $10 per year Necessary to attend FSAE Competitions Gets you access to many automotive resources at discounted prices!

How do I get SAE Technical Papers through Virginia Tech? o Go to Login with your SAE Account Click on the Publications link Click on the Paper Search link, and search for the topic of interest When you click on the search result/paper you want, you should reach a webpage that overviews the paper. Record the following Information: [1] Title of the Paper [2] Author(s) Name(s) [3] Month of Publication [4] Year of Publication [5] The Document # o Go to Login/Create an account Under the New Request section, Click on the Article link For the Article Author box, enter the Author(s) name(s) [2] For the Article Title box, enter the title as it appears on the paper [1] For the second Title box, enter SAE Technical Paper For the Month, enter the Month of publication [3] For the Year, enter the Year of publication [4] For the Inclusive Pages box, enter All For the Notes box, Enter the SAE Document # [5] Submit the request Wait for an notification from ILLiad on how to obtain the document. Depending on how much information you enter, it could take up to 3 days for a notification The notification may send an electronic copy of the document to you. IF YOU OPEN THAT DOCUMENT ON YOUR COMPUTER, THAT COMPUTER IS THE ONLY COMPUTER YOU CAN USE TO OPEN THAT DOCUMENT. You can print out multiple copies of the document

10 2. There aren t any seniors in the Ware Lab when I have time to be in there. What can I do to learn more? o Go to Click on the Team tab All team members and their addresses are available on this page. Contact a team member you would like to help and see if you can work out a time. o Attend meetings to find out about other events o There is a contact sheet posted on the inside of the Bay Door o If all else fails, but you still have access to the FSAE bay, hang out and learn the bay/ware Lab (where tools/parts/materials are located, read logbooks, etc.). If the bay is open, it s likely that someone will show up eventually. There are always tasks to be completed; even simple things like taking out the trash can help seniors when time becomes a premium! Take an initiative and ask questions! 3. What CAD Package does VT Motorsports use, and how can I get it? o Currently, VT Motorsports uses Unigraphics NX7 o The software is available to all engineering students through the network share o To download and install Unigraphics NX7: Login to Click on Unigraphics Network Share, and follow the installation instructions 4. Where can I find the Rulebook? o Search Google for: 2012 Formula SAE Rulebook o es.pdf o The New rulebook is typically released around September 1 for the coming competition year 5. How can I access the server from home? o Follow these instructions to connect to the Virginia Tech VPN o html

11 6. How can I change my login status on the team server? o Bring up Run ( Windows Button + R) o Enter control keymgr.dll o Click on the Server o Edit the status for your needs.

13 1. What do I tell people on a Ware Lab tour, an Engineering Tailgate, or a Recruiting Event, about our team? o The Ware Lab consistently has tours, and we are a regular invite at any College of Engineering Tailgate. Any public event is an opportunity to advertise/represent our team, team sponsors, etc. Any team member should be able to give anyone who is interested (Faculty, Industry representatives, even recruits) a good idea of our team. Below is a suggested outline on how to give a short presentation/public speech about our team. These spontaneous speeches take a lot of practice to remember the big points and even to put the words together, but they are impressive to potential sponsors/supporters: Introduce yourself, and your position on the team o Part/Subsystem/Sub-team Responsibility o Secondary Responsibilities o Don t be afraid to mention if you are a volunteer! We are VT Motorsports, the Virginia Tech Formula SAE Team o Primarily a Senior Mechanical Engineering Design Project We receive Senior Capstone Design Project Credit towards our Bachelor s of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) o Made up of approximately 18 seniors, 22 juniors, and 5 underclassmen volunteers o Include majors such as Aerospace Aerodynamics Business/Marketing Marketing Team Management Industrial Science Manufacturing Ergonomics o Can use potentially any Major at Virginia Tech: Art Majors Marketing Video Body Design Concepts Team Apparel Materials Science Composites Material Identification Physical Sciences Driver Fitness Our team operates on a 2-Year Design Cycle. o Research, Conceptual, and Preliminary Design during Junior year o Detail Design, Manufacturing, Testing, Competition during Senior year

14 This means that each year a new car is built for competition. The car is about 80% student built. o Designed to be mass produced and marketed to the amateur, weekend autocross racer o We build: Chassis/Suspension (except Shocks, Master Cylinders) Aero/Body; We do all of our own Carbon Fiber components Engine Externals/some Internals and Tuning (We buy the block) Nearly all Driveline Components (Except Differential and Chain, Wheel Outers, Tires) Custom Electronics Other Highlights as they pertain to current developments o Other Fun Facts: 0 to 60 mph in under 4 seconds Gear Limited to about 70 mph Power limited by restrictor from Competition Rules Pull 1.4 to 1.5 g s lateral Typical sports car does about 0.9 g Student Designed, Student Built, Student Driven Typically Test in Parking Lots around Campus Also have access to VTTI/Smart Road. Have access to Motor Mile Speedway Occasionally Each year, we compete in an international competition put on by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) held at Michigan International Speedway. o Compete against about 120 different schools from the United States and all over the world: Rochester Institute of Technology, RIT (USA) University of Wisconsin (USA) Missouri S&T (USA) Oxford Brookes (England) TU Graz (Austria) Western Australia (Australia) Sophia Global Formula Racing o Competition Results Won the competition in 1991 Overall, 10 Top-10 finishes in 23 year team history Recently, Design Semi-finals (top 16) in 2010, 2011 (Japan) (Oregon State USA & Ravensburg Germany 2 schools forming 1 team)

15 We are also responsible for our own budget. We raise about $60,000 in funding each year. o A lot of Material and Service Donations o Donations from Alumni o Some of our European competitors are junior Formula 1 teams, such as TU Graz in Austria, and have sponsorships from Red Bull rumored to be in the $500,000 dollar range Questions?
