Those not eligible or those signing up for courses requiring fees must pay by cash, money order or Visa or Mastercard. Are you eligible A limited number of academic courses are funded by the BC Ministry of Education making them tuition-free for eligible students who meet the following criteria. Your child: 1 is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident or convention refugee and 2 attends a BC school in the school year and ordinarily resides in BC with parent/guardian 3 has a BC Personal Education Number (PEN) IMPORTANT: ONE academic course tuition-free per eligible student. Full attendance is required. 2 Transfers A $35 fee will be charged for all requested transfers unless recommended by the Burnaby School District. Refunds for courses requiring a fee A $35 registration fee will be retained for all requested refunds for courses requiring fees. Requests for refunds must be made in writing and include original receipt. July 10 is the final day for transfers and refunds. Course Locations & Cancellations Courses and their locations cannot be guaranteed. Course offerings are subject to sufficient enrolment and may be moved or cancelled prior to the course commencing. For updated information visit Learning Support Students If your child has an IEP or an IEP/Fraser Health Care plan and is currently receiving additional learning support from an Educational Assistant at school, you must register by May 15 and indicate this at the time of registration. First priority for students requiring additional learning support will be given to Burnaby School District (SD41) regular session students. Learning Support Services will contact you to ensure that the Summer Session course meets your child s specific learning needs. Due to vacation schedules, placements and support cannot be guaranteed. Non-Burnaby School District students must register in person and bring all documentation required for registration and a copy of their child s IEP. Non-Burnaby School District Students Students who do not attend a Burnaby School District (SD41) school must register in person. A BC Personal Education Number (PEN) number is required to take a tuition-free course. The following documents are also required: 1. Proof of residence (2 required) Completed Agreement of Purchase; or Residential Tenancy Agreement; or Property tax notice; or Hydro/utility bill; or BC Driver s License; or Documentation from a government agency or financial institution AND 2. Proof of citizenship (1 required) Canadian Birth Certificate; or Citizenship card with photo ID; or Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) documentation AND 3. Copy of the student s most recent school marks Student s most recent report card; or Transcript of academic record

Designed to assist with the transition from Grade 7 to Grade 8, this course will prepare you for some of the classwork and expose you to life at the secondary school level. An introduction to the Math 8 and English 8 curriculums with an emphasis on research and study skills will be included. Students will gain an understanding of the expectations and behaviours required for success in Grade 8. 8 ACADEMIC COURSE DESCRIPTIONS One Tuition-free academic course per eligible student Art: Inspired by Nature (Primary) Designed to nurture your child s creativity this course takes full advantage of nature and the outdoors in art making activities. Students will be introduced to natural materials to show them how they can work with Mother Nature to create original works of art. Brain Gymnastics (Intermediate) Give your brain a fun workout every day! Learn strategies to see fascinating puzzles from different perspectives and find creative solutions to interesting challenges. This course will help students improve their skills in creative problem-solving and critical thinking such as observing, comparing, analyzing, evaluating and drawing conclusions. Drama - Developing Skills Through Play (Intermediate) This class will provide students with the opportunity to learn and practice several drama skills. Activities will include: drama games, Story Theatre improvisation, character building, script work and physical and vocal warm-ups. English Language Learners These classes are designed to provide opportunities for elementary students to improve their English language skills in an interactive and social environment. The focus is on listening, speaking, reading and writing along with increased vocabulary development. Grade 7 students may register for either the Program or Secondary Program. Essay and Report Writing (Intermediate) Learn an easy to follow formula to help communicate ideas and focus thoughts while adding style and meaning to your writing. Students will practice fundamental skills of paragraph organization, topic development, effective conclusions, and revision/editing skills. French Introduction and Enrichment (Intermediate) Looking to maintain or improve your child s French during the summer? Thinking about Late French Immersion? This activity- centred and communicative-based course will keep students moving and having fun in French. Open to beginners and novice students. Fun in the Sun With Reading (Primary) Develop an appreciation for the enjoyment of literature, increase confidence with the printed word and get a jumpstart for September. The development of literacy, critical thinking and higher level thinking skills will be stressed while participating in a variety of literary experiences. Grade 7/8 Transition This course is for students that have successfully completed grade 7 and would like exposure to life at the secondary level. An introduction to Mathematics 8, English 8 and expectations and behaviours required for success in grade 8. Imagination Quest (Intermediate) Your imagination can take you anywhere! An ipad can help you in that journey too. In this creative, imaginative course students will learn critical thinking, spontaneous problem solving skills, and the power of group work while building spaceships! Children will document their exploration via ipads and explore their ability to problem solve in critical and creative ways. Improv for Kids (Primary) Would you like to improve your confidence and communication skills while moving your body and having tons of fun? If the answer is yes come join us for Improv for Kids and let your imagination come to life! Manga Mania and the Graphic Novel (Intermediate) Bring Manga characters to life by exploring drawing, rendering and painting techniques. Develop your own story full of adventure and delight. Your imagination and love of drawing are all you need. Math Workshop (Primary and Intermediate) Students will be involved in activities that review and further develop their numeracy skills in the Number, Patterns and Relationships, and Shape and Space strands of the curriculum. Students will be exploring concepts concretely, pictorially, and symbolically. Modern Music (Intermediate) Students will expand existing skills and develop new ones in a fun, interactive environment featuring their favorite contemporary songs and rock classics. We ll work on songwriting, composition, instrumental skill/vocal skills and on stage performance techniques and incorporate technology (ipads) into music creation. Students will gain greater mastery of improvisation, both as soloists and in groups/combos. Odyssey of the Mind (Intermediate) Do you like working with hammers and saws? Do you enjoy crafting? Are you interested in how to make a vehicle move by itself? Design it! Build it! Make it go! We ll think, act and make our way through creative problems that include construction, vehicles, drama and art. Learn new ways of thinking about everyday problems. Join us on an Odyssey of the Mind! Performing Arts Workshop (Intermediate) This performing arts course will help to further develop and expand students knowledge of performance, composition and the rehearsal process of music and drama art forms. This course will focus on the composition of simple musical compositions, choral singing, African drumming and dramatic performances. Students who have successfully completed Kindergarten can participate in this hands-on course which is designed to stimulate minds in playful ways through engaging activities in a social setting. (French Immersion) Students who have successfully completed French Immersion Kindergarten can participate in this hands-on course which is designed to stimulate minds in playful ways through engaging activities in a social setting. For students who have successfully completed Grade 3. Grade 4 can be a challenging year for some students. Grade 4 organizational skills and behavioural expectations will be explored. Basic reading, writing and math skills will be covered in a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. Join the fun. 8

Skill Development (Primary and Intermediate) These courses provide your elementary-aged child with the opportunity to practice and review Language Arts and Mathematics foundation skills in individual and group settings. Sports and Rec (Intermediate) Continue to develop your physical abilities through a variety of athletic activities. Skill development, game strategy, physical fitness and recreation opportunities will help you hone your athletic skills. Learn the health benefits of regular physical activity and how to access opportunities to be active in the school and community through this fun and informative course. Participants will learn to set goals, develop a plan, and work towards improving fitness levels and developing new physical activity skills. Surprising Science (Primary and Intermediate) Students in both the primary and intermediate programs will have fun while learning scientific principles and methods through active hands-on experimentation. Writer s Workshop (Primary and Intermediate) Do you have a burning desire to be an author? Primary students will work together to build ideas, frame their thinking and use writing to communicate their thinking in a powerful way. Intermediate students will be taken through the steps of the writing process in order to further develop their skills in drafting, editing, revising, and critiquing their writing. Are you interested in participating in a play or musical? Students will have an opportunity to build their own sets and props during art activities and perform in their own play or musical. Enrichment & Recreation (Going into grades 2-4) During this course students will be involved in leadership activities, sport and recreation activities, art workshops and a variety of fun activities to help them build character, explore their passions, and learn to be leaders through a variety of action based, enjoyable activities. 10 Byte Camps 2D VIDEO GAME DESIGN (Ages 11-14) Create your own wacky characters, cool game play and fun levels in your very own on-line game! Students will start the week making short animated films, and each day new programming skills will be taught to help them make the animations interactive. The final project is a video game built from scratch that will go online and is handed out on take-home USB sticks! Have a look at for hundreds of great games from previous years! Lots of time during the week is devoted to outdoor activities so that your child is fresh for new challenges. June 29 - July 3 9am - 3pm 8500 (No class Tuesday, July 1) Burnaby North Secondary $210 3D ANIMATION (Ages 11-14) Dreaming of a career with PIXAR? Ever wonder how those awesome 3D animated movies like Shrek, Toy Story and The Incredibles are made? Spend the week learning how by modeling, animating and telling your own stories in 3D. You ll use wonderful (& free!) 3D software to design characters that jump off the screen and then make them come alive by adding voices, soundtracks and completing your own animated short film. Final projects will be posted online and handed out on take-home USB sticks to show off to friends and family. July am - 3pm 8507 Burnaby North Secondary $250 CLAYMATION MOVIE PRODUCTION (Ages 9-12) Make your own clay characters come to life, just like Wallace and Gromit! Participants will get to build their own clay characters, sets and props; develop their own script; shoot their movie scenes; and then learn to edit and add sounds and special effects to complete the whole project.
