3 Grades K 1 - Warrenton Three Course Choices: Awesome Art: The Masters of Design Building the Space Around Us On the Surface NOTE: Students must be at least five years old by February 1, 2014 and enrolled in kindergarten Awesome Art: The Masters of Design Students will learn basic art elements as they explore various art forms through the works of celebrated artists. They will be introduced to a variety of media as they create their own two-dimensional designs. Students will build their awareness of art principles and develop their own art foundations while learning about the fascinating lives and art works of renowned master artists. Building the Space Around Us Look around you. Buildings are everywhere, but what makes a building Architecture? We will investigate this question as we learn about design. Through a series of interactive building activities, we will explore the archetypal house while investigating what makes interior spaces work. We will collaborate and work individually to create a town of our imaginings. Creativity will reign as we follow our imaginations and build the space around us. On the Surface Get ready to think BIG. Geography is about what happens on the Earth s surface that s a lot of territory. In this class you will learn to think like a geographer. You will use maps, and satellites pictures and stories to find out how people use Earth s many kinds of land, and water, and climates. You will see, for example, that people like river valleys more than mountain tops and warm breezes more than icy winds. Then you will use what you have learned to invent your own country from the ground up. Four Course Choices: Art Exploration Origami Geometry Unique Me! Reader s Theater Grades Warrenton Art Exploration Welcome to Art Exploration! Get ready to embark on a journey into different styles of art. In this course you will learn about several artists from various countries and then have the chance to use their unique style to create art projects of your own. Each week you will learn what influences artists to create their work and then develop your own creative idea to produce a different piece of art. During the final class, you will have a chance to show off your work! Origami Geometry Welcome to Origami Geometry! This class will be an all math, all the time class that will feature Japanese paper folding, Origami, illustrating basic principles of Geometry such as angles, shapes, flips and folds. The protractor will be your friend in this class and so will the Japanese soroban, or abacus. You will learn how to count in Japanese and how to figure out how much yen you will need, depending on the exchange rate, to buy a plane ticket to Japan. You ll use math formulas to figure out how long it will take your plane to get to Tokyo from Virginia. When you get to Tokyo, how will math and science help you climb Mt. Fuji? You want to learn Sumo? There s physics involved here! What is the probability that your Origami Frisbee will win in a paper Frisbee-throwing contest? We ll figure that out. If you re up for the adventure, join this mathematical/scientific journey to Japan.

4 Courses for 2/3 - continued Unique Me! Do you like to write about your favorite things and hobbies? If you do then Unique Me! is the class for you! Join us and learn how to use different writing styles as a means of self-exploration. You will write poetry, autobiographies, self-reflections, and use different art mediums to display the unique you! Reader s Theater How can performing a play make you a better reader? Students become excited and enthusiastic about reading when they are presented with the opportunity to participate in Reader s Theater. Students develop scripts, perform in groups, and practice using their voice to depict characters from texts. Through Reader s Theater, students have the opportunity to develop fluency and further enhance comprehension. Final project includes performing a reader s theater play at the end of the program for parents. Four Course Choices: I Survived! Be an Architect! A Nose for News Playing With Shakespeare Grades Warrenton I survived! Step back in time to the year 1607 to Jamestown, Virginia. In this course you will become a History Detective. As a detective it is your job to uncover the keys to survival at Jamestown using your historical thinking skills. During each class we will focus on a primary source to analyze that will help you understand what it took to survive and make Jamestown the first permanent English settlement. Our learning experiences will include hands on activities like learning how to play 17 th Century games to pass the time on the voyage to Jamestown, create a nautical tool sailors used to measure depth, create a product for trade with the natives, learn how to use natural resources to make tools, and learning the secrets of John Smith s map! Prepare to have a blast in the past! Be an Architect! Greetings, Junior Architect! Your newest client has asked you to design their school library. Over the course of five weeks, you will learn the necessary architectural concepts from a Project Architect and strengthen your design and drawing skills to satisfy your client s needs for that library. You will learn to apply your knowledge of multiple subjects and disciplines to design and produce creative forms of architecture. Also, you will be introduced to architectural concepts such as sustainability and green building, to keep your library environmentally friendly for all who visit it. You will work and learn together with other junior architects but will design your own unique and individual library design. At the end, you will present to your client and fellow junior architects your final design, in drawing and small model forms. Are you up for this design challenge? A Nose for News Get ready to write and publish your work! Students will learn how to write for an authentic purpose, with an end goal (publication) in sight. They will also learn the basics of the newspaper business, to include reporting, interviewing, writing, editing, advertising, photography and page layout design. Playing With Shakespeare Welcome to Playing With Shakespeare! During our five weeks together, we will read a novel and do research about William Shakespeare. We will read Hamlet together, then choose parts, design costumes, and perform the play with our group. Your love of literature, reading, and performing will be the impetus for this course. You will learn about expression, delivery of lines, and staging, and culminate with our performance of Hamlet for your friends and families. This course gives students the opportunity to engage in interpersonal skills with other students in performance and language with the author William Shakespeare. Students will enjoy the thrill of live performance, excellent literature, and working together on a joint project.
