Vancouver Film School is excited to attend SXSW Just as SXSW presents a unique convergence of independent films and emerging technologies, VFS offers 13 world-class postsecondary programs spanning every aspect of the entertainment arts. To celebrate our SXSW attendance, we are offering up to $150,000 in scholarships across our programs in amounts spanning from $1,500 to $10,000 for the following start dates: April 29, 2013 June 24, 2013 August 26, 2013 A year at VFS is all about transformation and industry preparation. From day one, you are provided with unparalleled resources and totally immersed in your craft. By graduation day, you will have created more than you ever imagined possible. Please read the following instructions carefully, as incomplete applications will not be processed. scholarship application deadlines Scholarships are awarded on a first come, first served basis, so we encourage you to submit your application immediately. The following are the final submission deadlines for each class start date: April 1, 2013 for the April 29, 2013 class June 3, 2013 for the June 24, 2013 class July 29, 2013 for the August 26, 2013 class scholarship application process Incomplete applications will not be considered. 2 scholarship submission instructions Applying is easy but you must include the following: 1. The completed application form and questionnaire (see page 3). 2. A clear copy of a government-issued photo ID indicating your date of birth and legal name. 3. Contact information for two references preferably instructors, academic advisors, or employers. 4. A resume detailing your work history and education. 5. Transcripts from any institution you attended within the past five years (copies will suffice). Acting Essentials is ideal for those who feel a need to expand their foundation as an actor and for those without a portfolio sufficient to gain entrance into VFS s one-year professional Acting for Film & Television program. ACTING FOR FILM & TELEVISION Successful completion of VFS Acting Essentials and an invitation from the Acting faculty or An audition that meets Department standards: Applicants may conduct auditions in person or submit their audition by DVD or YouTube or by similar means. To schedule your in-person audition, call our Inquiries Department at For those applicants submitting their audition by DVD or online link, the audition must be specifically created for your VFS application. Please note, DVDs will not be returned. The video must be a maximum of six minutes in length and must be in the following format: 1. State your name on camera. 2. Maximum one-minute demonstration of a contemporary monologue. 3. Maximum one-minute demonstration of a short contemporary scene (applicant should be on camera and the reader off camera). 4. If desired, a maximum one-minute demo of a special skill (e.g., singing, dance, physical action, etc.). 5. Maximum two-minute video interview providing answers to the following questions: Why did you choose your audition pieces? How long have you wanted to act? Who inspired you to pursue an acting career? What are your strengths and weaknesses as an actor? If you couldn't be an actor, what would you choose to be? FOUNDATION VISUAL ART & DESIGN No program-specific entrance requirements. The Foundation program is ideal for those needing to develop a portfolio required to enter one of VFS s professional programs or for those who enjoy more than one entertainment arts discipline and are unsure of what they wish to pursue as a career. page 2 of 9

3 The following programs require either the successful completion of the VFS Foundation Visual Art & Design program or the specific requirements listed below. 3D Animation & Visual Effects A visual art portfolio of your work that includes life (preferred), still, or character drawings and 3D computer work (maximum 12 pieces total). To gain admittance and begin studies in 3D Animation & Visual Effects, some 3D experience is required. However, if you do not currently have sufficient 3D experience you may be given conditional acceptance based on the strength of a combination of your other computer artwork (e.g. Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) and your drawing skills. CLASSICAL ANIMATION A visual art portfolio of your work that includes still-life drawings, life drawings, and character sketches (maximum 12 pieces). DIGITAL CHARACTER ANIMATION A visual art portfolio of your work that includes life (preferred) or character drawings and 3D computer work (maximum 12 pieces). As this is an advanced program, your 3D work must prove that you currently have sufficient skills to excel in the program. DIGITAL DESIGN A portfolio of art, audio, video or interactive work (maximum 12 pieces). It is recommended that the portfolio highlight various components of digital media. ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS MANAGEMENT A one-page (maximum) description of an entertainment product or project that you would like to bring to market and how you intend to accomplish this. FILM PRODUCTION A one-page (maximum) synopsis of a film project that you are passionate about making. Provide the film genre and use references to other movies to explain how you would make the film. GAME DESIGN A one-page (maximum) synopsis of a game that you are passionate about creating. Explain the concept, vision or idea and include the genre of game and an explanation of who does what to achieve what. Include a diagram of the world and what the controls for the game would be (e.g., an Xbox controller). MAKEUP DESIGN FOR FILM & TELEVISION A portfolio that consists of sketches and/or photographs that best illustrate your artistic vision in makeup design (maximum 12 pieces). This can be in the form of a CD, DVD, colour photocopies, sketches, or photographs. SOUND DESIGN FOR VISUAL MEDIA A maximum 500-word letter of intent on why you wish to take the Sound Design program, in addition to an optional CD or web portfolio of your work in sound and music (maximum 5 minutes). WRITING FOR FILM & TELEVISION A one-page (maximum) synopsis of a feature film or television project that you are passionate about making. Provide the film genre, utilize references, and describe the two main characters and their conflict. page 3 of 9

7 rules & regulations 1. Scholarships are awarded on a first come, first served basis but will not be considered for a start date after the deadline outlined on page 1. We encourage students to submit their scholarship applications as soon as possible. 2. Scholarships will be awarded based on the applicant s talent, creativity, discipline, and focus, as well as the selection criteria outlined for this scholarship. The judging committee will consist of faculty and representatives from VFS, as well as scholarship providers. The decision of the judging committee is final. 3. Recipients must meet all admissions requirements and be accepted into VFS. 4. While individuals who have previously received scholarships or bursaries are welcome to apply, scholarships and bursaries cannot be combined. 5. Applicants must be at least 19 years old or have graduated from high school. 6. Employees and contractors of Vancouver Film School, scholarship partners, and members of the VFS scholarship selection committee and their spouses or immediate family members are not eligible to apply for this scholarship. 7. Scholarships cover part of the costs for tuition and specific program supplies. The scholarship recipient is responsible for all additional costs necessary to complete the program of study (including remaining tuition, housing, transportation, food, and incidentals). If the recipient cannot commit to attending VFS for any reason within two weeks of being notified that he or she has been selected to receive a scholarship, another scholarship recipient will be chosen. 8. VFS reserves the right to cancel this scholarship initiative at any time, at its sole discretion, in the event of any administrative conflict or error. VFS reserves the right to modify the rules of this scholarship in any way or at any time as long as reasonable notice is given.
