5 GENERAL INFORMATION OBJECTIVES This week long forest science course provides an understanding of Australian forest management, the economics of wood production and other forest services. The course will cover both planted and natural forests and will provide an appreciation of environmental issues and international strategic trends in the forestry industry. DATE AND VENUE February 2015 The University of Melbourne Water St, Creswick, Victoria Creswick is located in west-central Victoria, 129 km northwest of Melbourne and 15 km north of Ballarat. This former gold mining town had the original School of Forestry established in 1910 and has since had a long association with forestry education in Victoria and Australia and is currently a campus of The University of Melbourne. WHO SHOULD ATTEND The course is aimed at potential managers as well as consultants within the forest industry. The course will be of particular relevance to those who may have recently joined the industry with little formal training in the science of forest management. WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND A fuller understanding at a professional level of forest science and management and its application in Australia will assist you to become champions of our industry. This course will provide you with the understanding to improve your personal and business performances and to view your operations within national and international contexts. In order to facilitate exchange and discussion, the course is limited to about 35 participants. Early booking is advised to avoid disappointment. INVITED SPEAKERS The course presenters and the after dinner speaker have been invited from across Australia to share their extensive knowledge of the forestry industry. REGISTRATION The registration fee is $2530 per person. Registrants from organisations that are Patrons of the Gottstein Trust pay $2000, whilst Subscribers to the Gottstein Trust only pay $2275. This price includes GST and covers the presentation sessions, lecture notes, field trip, morning and afternoon teas, lunches each day, and special dinners on two evenings, but not accommodation or breakfast. ACCOMMODATION A block booking has been made at the Novotel Forest Resort Creswick, 1500 Midland Hwy, Creswick for $194/night (single) including breakfast, for the nights of Sunday 15 th February through to Thursday 19 th February inclusive. 6 GOTTSTEIN TRUST FOREST SCIENCE COURSE LECTURERS AND SPEAKERS Professor Mark Brown is the Professor of Forestry Operations and Director of the Forest Industries Research Centre, University of Sunshine Coast. Mark leads research across the entire forestry value chain, aiming to build a strong industry-focused collaborative research program for Australia. Senator Richard Colbeck is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture in the Federal Government with particular responsibility for forestry, fisheries and agriculture. Senator Colbeck is a proud Tasmanian and has a strong affinity for regional communities and agricultural industries. Mr. Rob de Fegely has over 30 years experience in the Australian forest industry. Rob is currently the Executive Chair of Cape York Timber, Non-Executive Director of VicForests, Senior Associate with Poyry Management Consulting (Australia) Pty Ltd and President of the Institute of Forests of Australia. Dr. Geoff Downes is currently Manager, Forest Quality Pty Ltd. Geoff has a background in tree biology and wood quality as a Principal Research scientist with CSIRO. He continues work undertaken to better understand and measure wood variation. Mr Peter Fagg has over 40 years experience in native forest management in Victoria. Peter has experience in the low and high elevation mixed species forests of East Gippsland and the mountain and alpine ash of the Central highlands. Peter also worked with box ironbark and river red gum forest managers, for both commercial and environmental outcomes. He has overseen the production of Victoria s native forest silviculture guidelines. Mr. Ross Hampton is the CEO of the Australian Forest Products Association. Ross has had a long exposure and association with the issues confronting the Forest and Forest Products sector and is a major champion of the industry. Ms. Claire Howell manages Australia s National Forest Inventory, in the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences. Claire led the national review of Australia s framework of criteria and indicators reporting progress towards sustainable forest management. Professor Peter Kanowski is Master of University House and Professor of Forestry in the Fenner School of Environment & Society at the Australian National University. Peter's roles comprise academic and professional leadership; research and teaching focused on forest and environmental policy, and on sustainability; and policy learning and development, and community engagement. Dr. Phil Lacy is the Manager, Technical Services for forest services company, PF Olsen. Phil is a Registered Professional Forester with recognised skills in plantation management and prescribed burning. He manages a team of specialists providing GIS, forest modelling, inventory, forest certification and contractor management systems. Dr. Nick O Brien is the Director, Investment Analytics for New Forests Pty Ltd, responsible for the modelling and analysis for forestry asset acquisitions. Nick is a forester with 20 years experience in carbon accounting, plantation nutrition and silviculture. Mr. David Paul has 20 years experience in the forest sector, both as an operational forester and a forestry consultant. David is a forest management specialist with experience in forest development, technical forestry and forest valuations throughout the Asia Pacific region. David also provides strategic advice on forest management and market related issues to a range of domestic and international clients. Mr. Chris Philpot is the Campaign Director of the Make it Wood campaign for Planet Ark. Chris has experience in media and stakeholder liaison and campaign management, securing funding for third sector NGOs and building brand profiles. Professor Roger Sands, now retired, was Head of the New Zealand School of Forestry, University of Canterbury. He previously served as Director of University Studies at the School of Forestry, Creswick. Roger has extensive international experience in silviculture, physiology and sustainable forest management. Dr. Jacki Schirmer is a Senior Research Fellow, at the University of Canberra and an Adjunct Fellow at the Fenner School of Environment and Society, ANU. Jacki's research focus is on understanding how changes in natural resource management impact the health and wellbeing of people living in rural communities. Mr. David Smith is a Forest Biosecurity Officer with the Victorian Department of Environment and Primary Industries and an Honorary Research Fellow with the University of Melbourne. He has been a forest pathologist / entomologist for over 14 years, working in forest health research and surveillance. Mr. Richard Stanton is the National Secretary at Australian Forestry Standard Pty Ltd. Richard is responsible for oversighting the revision of the Australian Forest Management Standard and has been involved in the forest and wood and paper products industries for many years. Dr. Andrew Sullivan is head of CSIRO s Bushfire Dynamics and Applications Group. Andrew was involved in developing, designing and coordinating the production of the CSIRO Grassland Fire Spread Meter, the Fire Spread Meter for Northern Australia and CSIRO-Modified McArthur Mk 4 Grassland Fire Danger Meter. Dr. Ashley Webb leads the development and delivery of soil research to support sustainable and profitable agricultural and forest industries for the NSW Department of Primary Industries. Ashley is passionate about sustainable forest management practices, particularly as they relate to catchments, and has extensive experience researching forest soil and water management issues. Dr. Chris Weston is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Forest and Ecosystem Science, University of Melbourne. Chris background is in forest nutrient recycling, with 20 years of overseeing postgraduate students.
