A Message from the Principal FAME A really great start to the season last night! What a truly talented group of technical and acting students. The audience enjoyed it hugely and my thanks to the staff who trained and worked with the students and to parents who have helped with make-up, costume and backstage. It has been a true team effort and a wonderful one! ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Yesterday, the English Department took 32 students from across KS 3 and 4 to see A Midsummer Night s Dream. It was a great success and clarified key aspects of Shakespeare s language, showing the students the value of seeing a live performance. The students, I am told, are still chuckling about aspects of the performance today and many parents have already ed their gratitude. Thank you to all. INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW EVENT Some of our Year 12 students organized an International Humanitarian Law Event in our Red Gym on Thursday. Practically all of our secondary school visited and the event was hugely successful. The red paint for handprints led me to suspect there was a LOT of extra cleaning needing in the Red Gym that afternoon!!! Mrs. Ann McPhee Interim Principal of the

6 6 Global Classroom News Upcoming Dates: Last day of March term: Student Leadership Song deadline Wednesday 25 March: Creative Writing competition deadline Tuesday 10 April: Global Orchestra Journalist Deadline Thursday 16 April: Illustration competition deadline Friday 17 April: Open Mic competition deadline Book Club Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson is the next Book Club choice and will be made live for discussions and exploration next week. Ultimate Reading List The GC Book Club tutors have developed a Nord Anglia reading scheme that will open to schools in September. There are talks of a reading challenge to read through a list of books throughout the year taking part in corresponding activities on the Global Classroom. The suggested list has been shared with students on the Global Classroom, asking them to vote for the Ultimate Reading List and input any additions. This can be found in Primary and Secondary Have your say, Primary Culture Zone and Secondary Lifestyle and Interests. This will also be available next week on NAU for teachers to cast their vote. The Great Debate New motions are now open - Primary Every child must learn a musical instrument. Secondary Shows like the X-Factor do more harm than good to the music industry. Young Journalists Masterclass 4 is now live on the Global Classroom site for all secondary students. Young Journalists Academy The Current Affairs task for the Academy is now live, and students have started to work on this. The deadline for the current affairs task is Friday 1st May. 7 7 TV Show review: New Tricks Starring Alun Armstrong, James Bolam, Amanda Redman, Dennis Waterman, Denis Lawson, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Tamzin Outhwaite and Larry Lamb Reviewed by Hannah Leigh To be perfectly honest, I first heard about New Tricks from my grandparents. I love them dearly, but I occasionally fear that we don t share the same taste in television. They like watching football, whereas I prefer 8 Out of 10 Cats, for example. So you can imagine my surprise at finding a TV series that is both engaging and entertaining but most primarily I can watch with my grandparents back in England. New Tricks is a crime series about retired detectives who try and solve cases that the police couldn t years ago. The show is based around the idea that once you re a detective, you re always a detective and there s always a way to put those skills to use. However, not only is the show centered about the life of older policemen and women, but also about the extraordinary lives they have lead and are leading today. Have you ever imagined Sherlock giving away his daughter at her wedding? Or Nancy Drew facing the perks and not so of old age? What I particularly enjoy about this show is the subtle humour involved within it. At times I find crime shows can be a little draining intense, even. They are solid blocks of storyline that need the air holes of humour to put the audience at ease. The humour incorporated within this show isn t just the rare line that could be interpreted otherwise but intentional banter between characters, again making the show more light-hearted and representing to the audience the bond between the retirees. On the other hand, I sometimes find it difficult to follow the plot of the show, as the detectives work so quickly that a new witness or name can be thrown into the vat of quotes, evidence and people that make up a forgotten case within minutes. I doubt this is the fault of the actors (who, for the most part, were starring in previous detective series), but rather that of the scriptwriter. Although I praise their humour, the scriptwriter can occasionally make the show confusing hard to follow. In conclusion, I enjoy watching this TV show because of its subtle humour, enjoyable characters and entertaining storylines even if it does have quite confusing plots. I would rate New Tricks as being 4 out of 5 stars and would recommend it to anyone interested in entertaining crime shows or just wants to get themselves stuck into an interesting storyline.
