2 Issue 3, April 2014 MICA Field Trip: Screen Paintings of Baltimore 8th Grade Students Visit MICA and the Screen Painting Exhibit ByMeganThompson,8 4 WhenmyclassfromtheBaltimoreDesignSchool wenttomicaforthescreenpaintingexhibitwe learnedaboutthehistoryofscreenpainting.we learnedthatitbeganinthe18thcenturyin Europewhenonlyrichpeopleownedscreensand theyhadtopainttheirscreenstokeepthem fromrusting.butwhenitwasdiscoveredthat somemosquitoescarrymalaria,havingscreens becameamatterofpublichealth.thenin1913 whenwilliamoktavecpaintedhisgrocerystores doors,screenpaintingcametobaltimore.then manyartistsbeganteachingthemselvesscreen paintingsoitcontinuedevenafterhisdeath. Afterwewentthroughthegallerywewatcheda documentarybyms.eff,whichreinforcedwhatwe hadlearnedinthegallery.itwasamazingtosee howthetechniquesvariedfromartisttoartist. Selfie Project: A Collaboration between BDS and MICA OnMarch27,2014thestudentsin 9.2begantheirfirstsession,inathree partcollaborationseries,withoneof thefreshmanclassesfromthe MarylandInstituteCollegeofArt (MICA). The9thgradestudentswalkedover tothemicacampustobegintheir collaborationona"selfie"themed project.duringthisfirstsessionour studentsgottoknowthemica freshman,theywereintroducedto"the selfie"project,andtheyallbeganto workontakingtheirownselfiesin preparationforsessiontwo. Duringthenextsessions,the studentswilllearnaboutthecyanotype photographyprocessandbeginto manipulatetheirselfieswiththe assistanceofthemicafreshman.iam lookingforwardtoseeingthefinal selfiesattheendofthiscollaboration!
