4 ipad for Students Augmentation Augmentation is basically substitution with a bit of added functionality. Using Google docs to create an essay allows the student to share the work with others in the class or the teacher. It s still basically the same task, but the possibilities are slightly greater. There are suggested apps for augmentation on the chart that follows. ipad for Students Modification At the modification level, the ability to move a task up on Bloom s taxonomy becomes easier. Modification means that although the task may be same, parts of it have been redesigned to utilize the added functionality of the ipad and to increase the rigor. There are suggested apps for modification on the chart that follows. ipad for Students Redefinition At this point, the ipad becomes a vehicle for reaching the highest levels of Bloom s. Students are able to share knowledge with a much wider audience and in completely different ways. For example, instead of writing a report to demonstrate their knowledge of a topic, students could create a video, an interactive image, an ebook, or an online presentation and share it with others in the class or with the entire world. There are suggested apps for redefinition on the chart that follows. Sharing Student Work For years, researchers have told us that the wider the audience for a student s work, the higher the quality of work the student will produce. The Internet has allowed us to give students an audience that can include the entire world. There are some considerations, however, before you have students engage in such activities. 1. Permission to Use Student Work Before student work is posted online, a Permission to Use Student Work form should be signed by parents. Your school may send this home at the beginning of the year, or it may be something you have to handle. The form is available at It is also attached to the end of this document. 2. Publishing Options Students work can be shared in a number of ways. ipads in the Secondary Classroom Page 4
5 a. Class Website, Wiki, or Blog work from all students can be shared via a class site. b. YouTube student videos can be uploaded for free to YouTube. By using YouTube Channels, you can determine whether the work is private, viewable to select users, etc. and you can disable comments. 3. Considerations - You need to consider how open you want the student s work to be. Do you want anyone, anywhere to be able to view it? Do you want these people to be able to comment on the work? Do you want comments to be immediately viewable, or do you want to preview comments before approving their appearance? Finding Appropriate Apps There are over a million apps available for the ipad through itunes. Finding good ones that are free can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. One way to find free apps for your subject are is to do a simple search. Open the App Store, in the top right corner, type in what you re seeking, for example, free math apps. Another way to find free apps is to download an app app. AppsGoneFree and AppsFire are two good apps that allow you to find apps that are free for a limited time. Once you find an app, how do you determine if it s a good one or not? First, look at the reviews. The sheer number of reviews producing a high average may be enough for you to try an app. You can read actual reviews. If this is an app you will be using with students, be sure to look for in app purchases. 6 Another good way to find apps is to do a very specific Google search. There are hundreds of blogs and websites where teachers evaluate apps for other teachers. Managing ipads in the Classroom If you ve ever been in a large meeting where many of the participants have ipads, you probably know that they can be a huge distraction for the owner. You may even have been guilty of trying to increase your level on Candy Crush when you should have been taking notes. This sort of thing will happen in your classroom as well unless you establish some basic classroom procedures for ipad use. In a 1:1 situation, it is important for students to have clear instruction on when it is appropriate to use an ipad and when it is not. A simple method to ensure that students are attending when you are giving directions or during other times when you need their attention is to have them turn the ipad face down on the desk. Once established, this routine will save lots of time and discipline issues. You should simply be able to say ipads face down and continue with instruction. The only way to ensure that students are engaged in appropriate activities on ipads when they are supposed to be using them is to monitor what they are doing. You HAVE to move around the room and keep an eye on screens. You may also want to establish procedures for the continued efficacy of the ipads. If the ipads are on a cart, students should plug them in when they return them to the cart. Students should treat the ipads with care. Screens can break!
