2 A safe (and FREE) way for teachers to text message students and stay in touch with parents/guardians. This is an app/web tool to send out classroom reminders via text message to help take the burden of remembering off of students and to increase their accountability. It is a great supplement to an agenda. Parents/guardians will always know what their child studied each day, when their child has homework, when assignments are due, and when tests are scheduled! This helps the teacher, parents/guardians, and student work collaboratively towards organization and success. A safe (and FREE) way to let your students interact with a lesson using their mobile phones. This is an app/web tool great for AFL (assessment for learning). Students can use smartphones, tablets, laptops, and even non-wifi cellphones (which covers a broad socio-economic spectrum). You can add real-time polls to your lesson and also send out quizzes that will automatically be graded A scanner and OCR. Allows you to take a photo of the text--it scans, recognizes, and reads it to you. This is an app (only available for Apple devices at this time) great for students who have LD or other reading challenges. The student simply takes a picture of the page, and the app will read the text to them. Students can also store the text for future use. 3 A web tool wherein a student pastes complicated text, and the site will rewordify it for them in simpler language. O Neill BYOD Leadership Team This is a web tool that helps students read more, understand difficult English faster, and learn words in new ways. Just paste in difficult English (or enter a web page URL) and click the yellow button. Students will see an easier version, for fast understanding now. They will learn what the hard words and phrases mean with the program s smart highlighting. Students can also just the difficulty level. This is another great tool for students with learning difficulties! Chirp is an incredible new way to share your stuff using sound! Chirp sings information from one phone to another. You can send/share photos, documents, and links to students through this app (made universal for different devices). Chirp is designed for quick and easy sharing between people in the same place. Send out an assignment, reading, quote, or photo to you students. Generate QR (quick response) codes for others to scan quickly and bring up websites, documents, etc on their SMART device. QR codes operate similar to a barcode on that can be found on almost every product we see in stores. Students simply open up their scanning app (free) on their device, scan the QR code, and their device instantly displays the code s link whatever information you want your students to read, quiz you want them to take, video you want them to watch, etc. Create a QR code for your classroom blog/wiki students simply scan it to access your link. Students enjoy QR code scavenger hunts as well!

4 A web tool that shortens long websites, making it easier (and more time efficient) for students to type a link in their bowser address bar. Some links (URLs) you want students to access are very long, and if one character is missed, the link will not function. Why not shorten the links you share with students by using bit.ly, and make it easier? Open a bit/ly account, and it will store and categorize all your shortened links. Google drive is a great way to create documents, collaborate with others, share your documents with your students, etc Google Forms is a useful tool to help you plan events, send a survey, give students a quiz, or collect other information in an easy, streamlined way. A Google form can be connected to a Google spreadsheet. If a spreadsheet is linked to the form, responses will automatically be sent to the spreadsheet. Otherwise, users can view them on the Summary of Responses page accessible from the responses menu. This is great for AFL in your classes. The students come in, see the QR code and start the pop quiz. When everyone is done, the teacher can open the spreadsheet with their responses and discuss their answers as a class. This tool is also great for pop quizzes. You can create a form from your Drive or from any existing spreadsheet. A free service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere. Any file you save to your Dropbox is accessible from all your computers and mobile devices, even the Dropbox website!

5 A web tool that creates and empowers discussion in a back-channel format. Students post questions/comments that other students can answer/respond to, or the teacher can address. Every student has a voice in your classroom with this web tool! Students who are typically shy to join in the classroom conversation can post questions/comments to the back-channel while the lesson is taking place. Students can have constant conversation without having to raise their hands, and can communicate/collaborate together in a 140-character easy-to-use interface. Students can continue the conversation after class as well! Include twitter hashtags to promote further discussion! Blogging tools that can be used as portfolios of student learning and allows students to connect and collaborate with peers. Student blogging has a ton of benefits. It allows for open reflection so that students can take time to reflect on what they learned and teachers can see the thought processes of their students. Blogging develops literacy through different mediums students can share their voice in sound files, youtube videos, slideshows, etc and become fluent in 21 st century literacies. Blogging empowers all students to have a voice wherein they can share with peers (and the world) their learning. Blogging also creates an open archive of learning, where students, parents/guardians, and teachers can look back on the development that has occurred through the weeks, months, and years. Lastly, blogging is a great way to promote digital citizenship and a positive digital footprint.

6 A video-conferencing app/web-tool that allows you to take your students anywhere in the world for free! With Skype, you can communicate and collaborate with other classes, no matter where they are, for the purpose of learning together. You can also find guest speakers and invite them into your classroom via Skype. Teachers can also take their students on a virtual fieldtrip anywhere in the world! A free, online mind-mapping and brainstorming tool! Mind-maps made easy! Bubbl.ue is a great tool to use for critical thinking. This tool simulates thinking, helps organize thoughts, and enables students to explore/analyze relationships between those thoughts. Mind-maps are stored in a personal archive for the student to come back, visit, and add to. This is a great tool to use for visual learners as well. Dragon Dictation is an easy-to-use FREE voice recognition app powered by Dragon NaturallySpeaking. This universal app allows students to easily speak and instantly see their thoughts recorded in text. In fact, it s up to five (5) times faster than typing on the keyboard. This tool is great for students with LD or other difficulties with writing. This tool allows students to focus on their thoughts, and later edit for submission to the teacher.

7 An online social networking and microblogging tool. The majority of students have a Twitter account why not get them following you? Post supplemental materials for lessons, challenges for students, and homework reminders. Engage students to collaborate with each other and with the world! Twitter is also the best kind of PD for teachers and it s all for FREE! Follow innovative educators implementing 21 st century learning in their classrooms, follow hashtag conversations about important educational topics of interest, and share and collaborate with educators all over the world! A behaviour management and data collection app and web-tool. ClassDojo helps teachers improve behavior in their classrooms quickly and easily. It also captures and generates data on behavior that teachers can share with parents/guardians and administrators. If teachers choose, they can use this app to give students real-time feedback while in class - it will sync with the main ClassDojo website. Better learning behaviors, smoother lessons, and hassle-free data - and it's free for teachers! An app and web-tool that makes creating a bibliography a breeze! On the website, students can create MLA, APA, and Chicago style citations in seconds by entering the book s title or ISBN. On their mobile device, students can simply scan the book s barcode and the citation will appear for them. EasyBib also make citations for a variety of other mediums (i.e. websites). Students can build, manage, and export their works cited list.

8 Like Facebook, Edmodo is a social learning network for teachers and students. Edmodo makes it easy for teachers and students to stay connected and share information. Students can use their mobile device or personal computer to send notes, access/submit assignments, post replies, and check messages outside of the classroom. Edmodo is a safe version of Facebook for students and teachers to communicate and collaborate for educational purposes. Evernote lets teachers and students take notes, sync files across their devices, save webpages, capture inspiration, and share their ideas with friends and colleagues. Evernote is an easy-to-use, free app that helps teachers and students remember everything across all of the devices they use. Stay organized, save ideas, and improve productivity. Evernote lets you take notes, capture photos, create to-do lists, record voice reminders--and makes these notes completely searchable, whether you are at home, at work, or on the go. Explain Everything is an easy-to-use design app that lets teachers annotate, animate, and narrate explanations and lessons. This is an app available on Apple and Android devices. Teachers can create dynamic interactive lessons, activities, assessments, and tutorials using Explain Everything's flexible and integrated design. Teachers can even upload their lessons for students to watch online. Explain Everything also acts as an interactive whiteboard.

9 Allows students to make interactive multimedia graphic organizers and mind-maps that they can share and collaborate with others. This is an app and web-tool in an engaging tool that allows for a collaborative mind-mapping experience. Easy-to use, with great features and a slick interface. Students can include photos, videos, and maps in their mindmaps! Students can share their popplets on their social media, blogs, and via . Popplets can be exported as a PDF and jpeg as well. A cloud-based presentation software and storytelling tool for presenting ideas on a virtual canvas. Prezis captivate audiences by zooming through a story/lesson. Professionally designed templates get users started. Prezis visually explain how ideas relate to one another. Students and teachers can incorporate images and videos into their presentations/lessons as well. Prezi is cloud-based, so students and teachers can create, edit, present, and share prezis from any device, anywhere!
