3 Session Description Based on K-12 research, examine Webbased tools and mobile apps that can enhance K-12 teaching. Bring your smart device and ideas to share.
4 Session Objectives 1. To present and demonstrate practical technological tools (Websites, programs, and mobile technology apps) and technologicallyfacilitated techniques that teacher candidates can use to increase the engagement, effectiveness, and efficiency of their teaching. 2. To demonstrate technologically-facilitated techniques that can replace or enhance traditional practices in the K-12 classroom.
5 Session Objectives 3. To present trends and best practices of technology use in the K-12 classroom based on research conducted by the presenter in two school districts and from an analysis of professional literature in order to bridge research and practice in teacher education. 4. To provide a forum in which higher education faculty can share technological tools and techniques that they either encourage in their programs, or that they have witnessed in practice by cooperating teachers and/or teaching candidates.
6 The Emerging Technology-rich Classroom Traditional: Lecture. Read from a textbook. Memorize facts. Work individually. Do worksheets. Do written homework. Take written tests. Written classroom management notes. Emerging: Less lecture, more handson application. More group activities. Student research. Production of multimediabased products. Use of mobile technology (maybe students own). Emphasis on assessment (exit tickets).

10 Research In early summer, 2015, teachers in 2 school districts (one urban and one rural) in Northeastern Pennsylvania were surveyed. 153 teachers completed the survey.

18 Research Results Summary Many teachers indicated they: Do not have access to much technology in their classrooms. Are unfamiliar with many of the technologies listed. Younger teachers indicated teaching with technology enhances their classrooms while some veteran teachers indicated disdain with focusing on technology vs. methods.
19 Research Results Summary Overall, teachers indicated that all teaching candidates should know: Traditional productivity tools. Software employed by district (learning management, grade management). Specialized apps to support various subject areas and specific tasks.
