1 1. Using the IPad and Browsing the Web a. Hardware Controls i. On/Off Button To turn the ipad on, just press and hold the on/off button. To turn it off, press the on/off button until the red slide to power off appears on the screen. The on/off button also puts the ipad to sleep by pressing it once and releasing. ii. Screen Location Lock/Mute In prior releases of the ipad and ios, this button, which is directly above the Volume Controls, would stop the screen from rotating. Beginning with ios 4.2, this button can now be made to lock rotation and mute the volume. The choice is yours and can be found in the Settings App. You can also lock/unlock the rotation by pressing the home button twice then sliding the bottom icons all the way to the right. The lock/unlock is the last icon on the left. iii. Volume The top half is to increase the volume of the ipad, which gives you an on screen graphic, informing you of volume levels. If you hold the lower half down for 2 seconds, this will mute the device. iv. Headphone Jack Here you can plug in ear buds or headphones to watch videos or listen to itunes. v. Dock Connector This is the port for external connections such as connecting the ipad to your PC. vi. Home Button This is the only button on the face of the ipad and serves many functions. 1. Move to another program just one button press, will bring you back to the main screen, which allows you to then move into another App. 2. Fast Home If you wandered far away from home, just double click the home button and you will be taken there immediately. 3. Spotlight Search from the Home Screen, clicking the button once brings you to the Spotlight Search, which allows you to search everything located on your ipad. b. Default Apps i. Calendar ii. Reminders iii. Contacts iv. Notes (Simple, but there are better ones to be had) v. Maps Address and Directions vi. Videos Play any video file that is on your ipad locally. vii. 2 viii. itunes This is the itunes store which lets you store and download music, books or videos directly to your ipad. ix. App Store If there is an App for That, and there usually is, you can download here. Both free and paid versions. x. Setting All the configurations and turning features on and off. xi. Safari Web browser. xii. xiii. Photos xiv. ipod no longer need to carry one of these around separately. xv. ibooks xvi. Newstand c. Browsing the Web i. Clicking in the address bar makes a keyboard appear. Type in the address here. ii. To the right of the address bar is a search bar. The default is Google Search, but can be changed in Settings if you prefer another search provider. iii. When looking at a news site for example, you will see an icon appear to the right in the address bar labeled Reader. If you click in this, all photos and graphics will be stripped from the page, allowing you to read the body of the website in a more mobile friendly view. iv. On the upper left of the browser screen appears a left and right arrow representing forward and back like that in your desktop web browser. v. Box with and Arrow when you click on this button while on a web page, additional functionality appears: 1. Add Bookmark 2. Add To Reading List this is new with ios 5.0 allowing you a running list of web page links you would like to put off reading until later. 3. Add to Home Screen have a website you frequent often? This will allow you to make it a button on your home screen. 4. Mail Link to this page for sharing webpages, automatically opens the mail app and inserts the link to the page you were looking at. 5. Tweet if in the setting page you enable your Twitter account, this will share the web page address with all of your followers. 3 6. Print if you have an AirPrint capable printer on your network, you can print directly to it. vi. Book Marks here you can save any websites you would like to frequent, view history, and reading list. vii. Two boxes with a number in the middle this is the Page Juggler. Safari can keep up to 9 web pages running simultaneously. d. Finger moves and keyboard short cuts i. Finger Moves 1. Tap With the tip of your finger, and not too hard or long, directly touch an icon, song, or app control to select it. 2. Drag Keep your finger pressed on the screen and slide it around to different areas. This can be used for various controls such as volume controls. 3. Slide Only used for the Unlock/Confirm button to shut down the ipad. 4. Flick Can be up or down to scroll through a web page or side to side as in a ebook. 5. Finger Spread and Pinch Using your thumb and index finger, you can zoom in and out of web pages in safari, photos, etc. 6. Double Tap Can be used to toggle between full screen and wide screen in videos as well as quickly zoom in on some apps. 2. Mail, Calendars and Contacts a. Exchange Server Connect to your office Outlook automatically. Clients can access their , address book and calendar over the air from the in house exchange server. b. Hosted Exchange Server hosted exchange refers to a service where a provider makes an e mail box and space available on a server so its clients can host their data on the server. The provider manages the hosted data of its clients on the server. Clients can access their s, address book, task management and documents from different places and seamlessly with the ipad. Any e mails sent or received, calendar updates, or contact changes are routed to the ipad through push technology. c. Google Apps Same as above but also includes a cloud based version of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software. 4 3. How to Multi Task and Use Folders a. Multitasking Double click from the home screen. This will slide open from the bottom and present you with any applications that are running in the background. Click on the app to open. Swiping from side to side lets you go through the list. Hold down the icon until a red X appears in the upper left hand corner of the icon. Then hit the red X to close. b. Grouping Apps Hold down one finger on an app until it shakes. Next drag the app icon into the other icon you wish to group it with. This will create the folder. Tap into the title bar of the new folder. When the keyboard appears you can then customize the name. Click the home button to exit edit mode. 4. Adding Files to your ipad and Syncing a. Sharing Files Between ipad and Your Computer i. Cloud Syncing 1. Dropbox an easy to use service that allows you to sync files online and across all computers whether Windows, Mac or mobile. It creates a folder on your desktop which will allow all parties to share the same files without having to them. The service is free up to 2GB of storage. 2. Box.net web based file sharing service similar to drop box. The exception being files need to be uploaded to their website, so there is no offline sync like with Dropbox. 3. icloud is a cloud storage service offered by Apple and built into the ios. The service allows users to store data such as music files on remote computer servers or download to multiple ios devices, and personal computers running Mac OSx or Windows. It also replaces Apple's MobileMe service, acting as a data syncing center for , contacts, calendars, bookmarks, notes, to do lists and other data. b. Other File Management i. Backing Up Your Files When using cloud based services such as Drop Box, Box.net and icloud, tethering and backing up to itunes is mostly unnecessary. You can even update to the latest ios over Wi Fi when on your office or home network. c. Productivity i. Pages (Word Processing) ii. Numbers (Spreadsheet) iii. Keynote (Presentation) d.
