1 Art and 2016/17 courses
2 ART AND DESIN Edinburgh College has one of the largest college art and design departments in Scotland. You can choose from a wide range of courses from art and design portfolio building, visual communication, interior design, textiles and fashion, computer arts, 3D animation and contemporary art practice. Whichever area of art and design you choose, our experienced teaching staff are here to support you to produce a portfolio that will get you noticed. All our art and design courses have a focus on practical briefs, exciting opportunities to undertake projects which will give you creative work experience. Edinburgh is the perfect place to develop your creative skills, with events and exhibitions throughout the year. Being in the creative capital of Scotland has also allowed us to build exciting links with industry, leading to work placements, live project briefs, gallery based projects, visits to art and design studios, and guest speakers. Regular visits to local studios, galleries and workshops are a key part of our course delivery and students also have opportunities to participate in study trips further afield for example London, Paris, Berlin and Basel. Candidates will be asked to bring a portfolio of recent practical and contextual art and design work to their interview or complete a set task depending on the specific course applied for. You can prepare by collecting together your art and design work, visiting some exhibitions and thinking about what you can tell us about yourself and your interest in art and design when we meet you at interview. LET S LOW May - June 2016 The Let s low festival is a two month creative explosion giving audiences the chance to enjoy performances and exhibitions from Edinburgh College students covering everything from music, theatre and dance to photography, sculpture, illustration and much more. AWARDS Our students are often in the news, winning national awards for example the D+AD, Show Racism The Red Card, SQA Star Awards and the Scottish Digital Business Awards. EXHIBITIONS At the end of the year our students exhibit and launch their careers as part of the Let s low Festival. This year our exhibitions and industry events include high profile venues including the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, Summerhall and the Fruitmarket allery. 01 Edinburgh College Performing Arts 02
3 ART AND DESIN DAN WJ PRASAD // MENSWEAR DESINER I obtained an MA in menswear from the prestigious Royal College of Art in July 2014 where I developed and worked very closely with a tailoring house in Italy. My final collection was produced by the last standing menswear couture house Brioni now owned by the Kering roup. My time at RCA was a great stepping stone for the next stage of my career and gaining employment in the fashion industry. I obtained my first job with E.Tautz within two weeks of graduating from R.C.A. Prior to entering R.C.A I was successful in gaining direct level entry into year two of BA Fashion at Edinburgh College of Art after studying in the Art and department at Edinburgh College; this was possibly the most important part of my education. I spent three years at Edinburgh College, firstly studying the Foundation Diploma in Art and before progressing onto the HND in Textiles. My aim at Edinburgh College was to build an exciting portfolio and gain the knowledge and experience to successfully enter art college. Not really knowing what I wanted to specialise in during my Foundation Diploma, I was guided into an area of design that I previously hadn t considered. The teaching was not only impeccable but inspiring and the support that the Art and department provided, shaped me into a student that was knowledgeable, excited and competent within my specialism. In fact so much so that I decided to stay for another two years to gain even more experience within fashion and textiles by studying the HND. This provided me with the confidence and belief in my own work and chosen career path. The most important part of my time at Edinburgh College was that it provided me with the time to understand what path I wanted to follow. I now am employed as a Menswear er for E.tautz. I work on collections for runway, twice a year we show at London fashion week (LCM London Collections Men). I also work on the ready to wear line for our store in Mayfair along with a seasonal womenswear collection, shown twice a year at London Fashion Week (Womens). I am forever grateful to the staff of the Art and department and fashion and textile team for believing in and inspiring me. PARTNERS We are the first college in Scotland to offer Art & qualifications from the prestigious University of the Arts London (UAL) Awarding Body. UAL is Europe s largest specialist arts university and their innovative courses prepare students to enter the best arts courses at the best arts universities, across the UK.
