Humphreys, MLS, is Deputy Director of the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM). As Deputy Director, she shares responsibility with the Director for overall program development, program evaluation, policy formulation, direction and coordination of all National Library of Medicine activities. Betsy also coordinates the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) project, which produces knowledge sources to support advanced retrieval and integration of information from disparate electronic information sources, and NLM s activities related to health data standards. She contributes to the development of NIH and HHS policy on a range of matters, including health information technology, public access to research results, clinical trial registration and results reporting. Betsy received a BA from Smith College, where she elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and an MLS from the University of Maryland, College Park. She is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics, and a Fellow of the Medical Library Association. She is the recipient of a number of awards, including the Marcia C. Noyes Award, which is the Medical Library Association s highest honor, the first Cornerstone Award conferred by the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries, the Morris F. Collen Award of Excellence from the American College of Medical Informatics, considered the highest honor in the field of medical informatics and the rank of Meritorious Executive in the Senior Executive Service, conferred by the President of the United States :30 a.m. Break Foyer sponsored by McGraw-Hill Medical
3 10:30-11:30am Speaker, Sally Gore Ballroom Sally Gore, MS, MS LIS, is an embedded research librarian and informationist at the Lamar Soutter Library, UMass Medical School in Worcester, Massachusetts. She serves on grant-funded clinical and community outreach research teams, providing information, data, and knowledge management services for the projects. Prior to this, she was Head of Research and Scholarly Communication Services, overseeing the Library s efforts at collaboration with researchers on campus, as well as all scholarly communication endeavors, including escholarship@umms (Institutional Repository). Sally earned her graduate degree in Library and Information Science from Syracuse University and an MS in Exercise Physiology from Ithaca College. He originated Patient Safety Awareness Week in 2003, an event which is now recognized internationally. Mark also pioneered efforts to address diagnostic errors in medicine, and his research in this area has been supported by the National Patient Safety Foundation and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. In 2008, Mark founded and chaired the Diagnostic Error in Medicine conference series, in 2011 the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine, and in 2014 the journal Diagnosis. He has an extensive background in biomedical and health services research, with more than 80 peerreviewed publications. Mark is professor emeritus of medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
