2 Speaker Bios Lewis G. Sandy, MD, FACP UnitedHealth Group, Executive Vice President, Clinical Advancement Lewis G. Sandy, M.D., is Executive Vice President, Clinical Advancement, UnitedHealth Group (a Fortune 25 diversified health and well-being company dedicated to helping people live healthier lives). At UnitedHealth Group he focuses on clinical innovation, payment/delivery reforms to modernize our health care system, and physician collaboration. He also is a Principal in the UnitedHealth Center for Health Reform and Modernization, with a focus on payment/delivery innovation and policy. From 2003 to 2007, he was EVP and Chief Medical Officer of UnitedHealthcare, UnitedHealth Group s largest business focusing on the employer/individual health benefits market. From 1997 to 2003, he was EVP of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. At RWJF, he was responsible for the Foundation's program development and management, strategic planning and administrative operations. Prior to this, Dr. Sandy was a program VP of the Foundation, focusing on the Foundation's workforce, health policy, and chronic care initiatives. An internist and former health center medical director at the Harvard Community Health Plan in Boston, Massachusetts, Dr. Sandy received his B.S. and M.D. degrees from the University of Michigan and an M.B.A. degree from Stanford University. A former RWJF Clinical Scholar and Clinical Fellow in Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Sandy served his internship and residency at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. He is a Senior Fellow of the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, Department of Health Policy and Management.
3 Jon Christianson, Ph.D. Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, Vice Chair Jon Christianson received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He is on the faculty of the Division of Health Policy and Management, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota, where he serves on the Division s executive committee. Previously, he was Head of the Department of Healthcare Management, Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. He has held the James A. Hamilton Chair in Health Policy and Management at the University of Minnesota since During his career, Professor Christianson has authored ten books and over 200 journal articles and book chapters, been a consultant to numerous private and public sector organizations, and served on several editorial boards. In 1995, he coauthored a paper that received the Annual Research Award of the National Institute for Health Care Management, and in 2007 he chaired AcademyHealth s annual research meeting. He also has chaired NIMH s meeting on the Economics of Mental Health, and for six years was chair of the health benefits committee for a non-profit organization with 14,000 members nationwide. From , Professor Christianson served on the Subcommittee on Maximizing the Value of Health Investments, Committee on Quality of Health Care in America, Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences, which produced the report To Err Is Human. More recently, he was a member of the IOM s Geographic Adjustment Factors in Medicare Payment Committee. Currently, he serves on the IOM s Board on Health Care Services. He also is Vice-Chair of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, which advises Congress on Medicare. Professor Christianson s recent research and teaching have focused on measurement and reporting of provider performance, physician payment arrangements, health care purchasers, and the health insurance industry. He regularly teaches graduate courses on the health care system and on health care purchasers and health insurers.
4 Mike Finch, Ph.D. MILI CSOM Executive in Residence Michael Finch, Ph.D., received his degree in Sociology from the University of Minnesota. From 1984 through 1998 he was a member of the faculty of the Division of Health Services Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota where he reached the rank of Associate Professor with tenure. From 1998 through 2004 Dr. Finch was Director of Research Programs for UnitedHealth Group. He is currently a member of the Graduate Faculty at the University of Minnesota with appointments in the Carlson School of Management and the School of Public Health. He teaches the required Healthcare Marketplace course for MILI and is one of the instructors for the Medical Industry Valuation Laboratory. Dr. Finch is widely known for his work on the cost, quality and financing of health care in the public and private market and is nationally recognized has as an expert in research methods and evaluation. Finch has been a principal on over a dozen federally sponsored grants and contracts, including HCFA s National Post-Acute Care project, the Second Generation Social HMO demonstration, the NIMH funded Youth Development Survey and the NIA funded Evaluation of the Medicaid Demonstration. He has conducted major studies on the effects of surgical volume on outcomes in hospitals, guideline performance for diabetes, the cost and financing of end of life care and hospital safety. His latest book explores the role of physician communication in health care.
5 Mark J. Werner, MD, CPE, FACPE National Director of Clinical Consulting Mark J. Werner, MD, CPE, FAAPL is a Director with The Chartis Group and National Leader for Clinical Consulting across all practices with a particular focus on clinical transformation, healthcare innovation, population health, physician leadership and alignment, provider-payor relationships and the translation of strategy into clinical operations. Dr. Werner brings over 25 years of experience providing transformational healthcare leadership in integrated health systems, academic medical centers, clinically integrated networks, multi-specialty physician groups and health plans addressing the imperatives of value creation, value-based payments, patient and provider engagement, and innovative consumer-centric solutions for high quality affordable healthcare. He has worked in progressive organizations on the leading edge of healthcare transformation, accountable care, clinical integration and the creation of a new medical school. Before joining The Chartis Group, Dr. Werner held positions as the Chief Clinical Innovation Officer for Fairview Health Services, President and Chief Physician Executive of Carilion Clinic and its associated hospital system, Chief Clinical Officer for Medica Health Plan, as well as leadership roles within several academic health centers. He led one of the first accountable care organizations in the nation, led the transformation of a hospital operating company into a clinician led integrated clinic model, and led network, value-based payment and population health strategies for an innovative health plan. Throughout his career, Dr. Werner has focused on creating the core capabilities and capacity to thrive as an organization responsible for the health of a population realizing the value of new care models and recognizing new economic value derived through clinical integration, physician leadership and engagement, provider-payor partnerships and new payment methodologies. He has led multiple technology platform assessments and implementations particularly for electronic health records, data management and clinical analytics. Prominent within the national physician leadership community, Dr. Werner serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Association for Physician Leadership (formerly ACPE). He has previously served on the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Child Health Financing and remains a member of numerous boards and advisory groups across the healthcare industry. Dr. Werner is a national presenter and advisor on critical areas in healthcare. Dr. Werner received his medical degree from Vanderbilt School of Medicine with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. He completed his residency in pediatrics at Vanderbilt and a fellowship in adolescent medicine at Cincinnati Children s Medical Center. He went on to complete a program in medical management at Carnegie Mellon University through ACPE. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry from Rice University where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude.
6 Jude Wimberger, MBA Medtronic, Director of Value-Based Healthcare Strategy Jude Wimberger is a Director in Healthcare economics and is responsible for managing the development and implementation of the Medtronic Value Based Healthcare strategy. Since joining Medtronic in 2005, Jude has had leadership experience in many functional areas including product marketing, portfolio management, business strategy, customer operations, and project management. For the last 6 years, Jude has specialized in the integration and execution of enterprise wide strategy; managing cross-functional and global teams. As part of this work, he led the integration of the Economic Value strategy; one of three key growth drivers for Medtronic, and also served as a global functional lead for the Covidien integration. Jude graduated from the full-time MBA program at the Carlson School of Management in During the MBA program, Jude was a member of the Carlson Consulting Enterprise. Jude has additional work experience in information technology both as an emerging technologies instructor at Anoka-Ramsey Community college and as an independent IT consultant for from Jude is actively pursuing a leadership development coaching certification through the Strozzi Institute Somatic Coaching program based in Northern California and is an active aikidoist (practitioner of Aikido - Japanese martial art). Through the study of Aikido, Jude actively trains at the Shuharikan dojo in St. Paul and has trained in Japan. 7 William Knutson, MBA Care Choice Cooperative, CEO; Cather Consulting; MILI Executive in Residence Bill is a senior healthcare executive and consultant with extensive experience in strategy formulation, physician integration, campus development, service line formation and operational performance. Bill held numerous leadership positions in the HealthEast system in Minnesota; most of his 20 years leading St John s Hospital as Vice President/Administrator. His numerous consulting projects in hospital and senior services include developing/implementing: a neurologist/hospital call system, a medical tourism hospital, senior living campus, geriatric physician practice, payer contracting for a national primary clinic group, critical access hospital strategic plans and has served as an advisor to medical device startup companies. Bill is CEO of CareChoice Cooperative, a group of 40 LTC facilities currently an HCIA-2 awardee developing a value based payment model. He recently participated in the development of a virtual ACO in rural Minnesota (Southern Prairie Community Care) under the MN DHS IHP program, and is part owner in a wound care company and partner in a physician practice and consulting group for post- acute services (LTCPros). He has recently been appointed as an Executive in Residence at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. Bill has a Master s in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.
