2 Who Should Attend This program is intended for physician leaders as well as staff and employed physicians with leadership potential. Continuing Education Credit Get rewarded with new insights and credits. CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION (CME): 11 CME The American Association for Physician Leadership is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The American Association for Physician Leadership designates this live activity for a maximum of 11 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. AMERICAN COLLEGE OF HEALTHCARE EXECUTIVES (ACHE) The Illinois Hospital Association is authorized to award hours of pre-approved ACHE Qualified Education credit (non-ache) for this program toward advancement or recertification in the American College of Healthcare Executives. Participants in this program wishing to have the continuing education hours applied toward ACHE Qualified Education credit should indicate their attendance when submitting application to the American College of Healthcare Executives for advancement or recertification.

3 Day 1: Thursday, October 29 8 am 4:30 pm Leading and Managing Strategic Innovation and Change Innovators think beyond the status quo. They develop and promote ideas until they become accepted because they want to make a difference in people s lives. In health care, change is a constant. To thrive as a physician leader, you must lead and manage change while encouraging strategic innovation to make a difference in your patients lives. In this course, you ll learn how to create a compelling vision instead of a burning platform so you can make a successful case for change and spark innovation. You ll gain the tools, techniques and skills required to lead change, not just manage it, and establish your organization as an innovative leader in health care. You ll also be able to: Define the role of the physician executive in leading and managing strategic innovation and change Identify the top reasons why organizational change efforts fail Embrace resistance rather than fight it Describe the six steps of the Blueprint of Successful Change Model Develop a 30-, 60-, and 90-day action plan to transfer key concepts to your organization Describe how to make the case for and differentiate between leading and managing strategic innovation and change Distinguish between a compelling vision and a burning platform presenter: William Marty Martin, MA, MS, MPH, PsyD, CHES Director & Associate Professor, DePaul University Marty Martin is an Associate Professor and the Director of DePaul University s Master of Science in Human Resources. Specializing in health sector management, Martin has launched three innovative degree programs: a dual MBA/MS with Rush University, a health care concentration in the predictive analytics MS, and a health informatics MS. Martin works with health care organizations in Chicago to promote innovation and entrepreneurship, and collaborates with business incubators such as Healthbox. He was recently selected as a Coleman Entrepreneurship faculty fellow. With more than 100 refereed journal articles to his name, Martin s work has appeared in the Journal of Health Care Finance and the International Journal of Computer Science and Technology. He is an internationally acclaimed speaker, author, researcher and coach on topics ranging from managing physician performance to elements of teamwork.

4 Day 2: Friday, October 30 8 am Noon From Autonomy to Teamwork Physicians are trained to be autonomous. Yet this strength that contributed to success in medical training can become a liability when teamwork is required. Health care is collaborative. It requires physicians to serve both as strong team leaders and team members. Clinical teams are the cornerstone of highly reliable care. For physician leaders, highly reliable care means influencing team members to adopt protocols that ensure patient safety. In this course, you ll explore highly reliable care, including how good decisions are made, and the connection between system leadership goals and patient care. You ll also be able to: Describe the three types of human error and team communication techniques that minimize error Identify the characteristics of effective clinical teams, including communication behaviors for physicians to promote teamwork Define how conflict arises within an organization Understand the differences between authority and leadership and how to influence others to change from the status quo presenter: Barry Silbaugh, MD, MS, FACPE CEO, Barry Silbaugh MD LLC Dr. Silbaugh was the first physician CEO of the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE). In that role, he developed education programs focused on patient safety, high reliability, and integrating cultures of medicine and management. In 2009, Modern Healthcare named Dr. Silbaugh one of the 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare. He served on the board of governors of the National Patient Safety Foundation between 2009 and Then, in 2012, he was honored as an ACPE distinguished fellow. Dr. Silbaugh co-authored a book about one of the most memorable airplane landings in recent history, Landing on the Hudson River: Lessons for Health Care (PEJ May/June 2010), with Flight 1549 co-pilot Jeff Skiles. The book outlines key principles of safety and teamwork, which are relevant to health care.
