1 COURSE OF STUDY/CONTENT STANDARDS INFORMATION PAGE Course Title: DIGITAL IMAGING (Course #635) Rationale: Course Description: A school-to-career course for the digital artist. Students learn industrial graphics programs: Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, as well as the operation of peripheral devices, such as: scanners, digital cameras, and graphic slates. Copyright law is a critical component of this course. 2 Students will gain digital literacy through the use and practice of computer graphics applications. ARTISTIC PERCEPTION - Standard 1: The student will demonstrate an understanding of works in the visual arts by analyzing and interpreting what the artist presents in visual form. 1. Students will compose a work that uses at least three different kinds of digital edges feathered, anti-aliased, and hard edge combined together to create a compelling composition. Students are modeled examples of edge detail and their execution on the computer. Students are modeled examples of edges used together for variety, emphasis, and unity. 3 Students will master computer graphics applications to be able to manipulate artistic content. Students will gain knowledge of layering, channels, and constructive and destructive filter effects to be able to compose a collage in three dimensions. CREATIVE EXPRESSION - Standard 2: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the forms, elements, and principles of visual arts. 1. Students compose a work made up of at least five layers with the following attributes: clipping groups, blending modes, layer masks, and complex selections saved as alpha channels. Students will compose an unflattened image on the computer. Work will be assessed by instructor on-screen, and then compare with printed output for final editing. 4 Students will demonstrate a knowledge of the history of computing. Students will understand copyright law as it pertains to the digital artist, including the historical development of copyright. HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT - Standard 3A: The student will demonstrate an understanding of major visual arts traditions, styles and media in a variety of times and places. 1. Students file form VA with the copyright office in Washington D.C. to copyright one of their original works. 2. Students become familiar with Legal Guide for the Visual Artist through written homework assignments. Text, videos, regular chapter homework, and assignments on copyright law. 5 Students will demonstrate a working knowledge of copyright and be able to protect their own intellectual property. HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT - Standard 3B: The student will demonstrate an understanding that the visual arts and artists reflect, play a role in, and influence culture. 1. Students watch videos Revenge of the Nerds and answer quiz questions on the history of computing. 2. Students will develop a working knowledge of how computing has affected all aspects of our economy and culture. Modeling, interjection of historical content in all teaching. Students accept commissioned work and develop contracts that describe payment, copyright protection of the artist, time lines, and exclusions. 6 Students will develop a working knowledge of what qualities are present in a visually compelling digital image and what tools can be used to achieve them. AESTHETIC VALUING - Standard 4A: The student will demonstrate an understanding that specific criteria can be developed and used to assess the qualities and merits of works of art. 1. Students will understand how to flatten files and the different kinds of graphic file compression schemes available on the computer. 2. Student will demonstrate a working familiarity with the concepts of image size, resolution, pixelization, and more. Modeling, practice, physical assessment of the file by both students and instructor. 7 Students will demonstrate an understanding of what makes a good composition graphically on the computer. AESTHETIC VALUING - Standard 4B: The student will demonstrate an understanding of form and meaning in the visual arts. 1. Students will hand color on the computer an old or damaged photograph paying particular attention to composition, visual weight, and the elements of design. 8 Students use the knowledge and experience gained in digital imaging to enhance their appreciation of all art forms and to improve their qualifications in the job market. CONNECTIONS, RELATIONS, APPLICATIONS - Standard 5: Connecting and applying what is learned in each art form to learning in other art forms, subject areas, and careers. 1. Students develop digitally produced advertisements after discussion of what makes a compelling advertisement. 2. Students develop digital portfolios exhibiting their skills for prospective employers. 3. Students perfect digital resumes that can be transferred to employers via the internet.
