This course has been edited to include a unit on photography, as in the past few years a majority of students now have their own camera, and have expressed interest in improving their photography skills. Suggested name change to Graphic Design 11 because less focus is placed on Desktop Publishing software and a greater focus is on design. Students will learn how to use industry standard image editing and print software. Students will learn elements and principles of design. Students will learn creative photography skills. Student final projects will be appropriate for a college or work portfolio.
2 Rationale: This is a specialized course that allows the student to develop personal attributes and skills to explore career paths in desktop publishing, photography and graphic design industries. Organizational Structure: Unit Title Time Unit 1 Image Editing Software (Photoshop) 25 hours Unit 2 Photography 20 hours Unit 3 Graphic Design Unit 4 Portfolio Projects Unit / Module Descriptions Unit 1: Image Editing Software Students will learn how to use PhotoShop through a variety of hands-on tutorials, assignments and individual instruction. Students will learn how to format text, arrange elements and use images creatively. Students will explore image manipulation, photo restoration and retouching. Photoshop Basics Retouching photos Changing Colours Editing Brushes/papers/Fills Using Layers Image formats Special effects Unit 2: Photography 20 hours Students will be learn how to use the settings on a digital camera, common terms, how to correctly save, transfer files, share photos. They will learn about the rules of photography and apply this knowledge to their photography projects. Students will explore the history of photography and research famous artists. Digital Camera Terms Using a Digital Camera uploading/saving Rules of Photography Types of photographs portrait, still life, landscape, action Lighting History Famous Artists/Photographers
3 Unit 3: Graphic Design Students will be introduced to the elements and principles of design, typography, and careers. Students will explore colour theory and various design styles. Students will be exposed to a variety of print media formats. They will be made aware of the design process and learn how to plan a design and evaluate their success. They will research the current industry and post-secondary opportunities. Principles & Elements of Design Colour Theory Common Design Mistakes Designing an advertisement Career Research Typography Elements of a layout Unit 4: Portfolio Projects Students will apply their knowledge learned from the earlier units to create a variety of print media. These projects will be collected in a portfolio for evaluation at the end of the course. Portfolio projects may include flyers, logo design, business cards, greeting & invitation cards, newsletters, CD covers, brochures, yearbook pages and t-shirt designs. Portfolio projects will demonstrate creativity, writing skills, and an understanding of graphic design.
