LAB FEE: $27.00 COURSE DESCRITION: This class will emphasize design and artistic conception while giving students the important formal elements of graphic design such as color theory, mechanical drawing, typography, along with the most up to date digital tools (adobe suite, Photoshop, InDesign, illustrator). Students will learn the most effective way to visually communicate information while maintaining artistic integrity of an image or advertisement. Students will also create a full-length magazine throughout the course of the semester. Complete with a cover story, Advertisements, cartoons, original fonts, articles, illustrations, etc. This will give the students experience in the many varying fields of graphic design. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students will demonstrate an aesthetic awareness and an appreciation of design through the understanding of design and technology based terms, techniques, and their application.
2 *Quizzes and exercises will be given on manual (by hand) design techniques and vocabulary as well as software based (Adobe Suite) techniques and vocabulary. Students also will be expected to remember essential keyboard commands for Adobe Software. Students will demonstrate an understanding of how formal properties are used to create perceptual and psychological effects and those repercussions in regards to design. *Lectures will be given on perceptual and psychological effects of graphic design. Students will be expected to implement these tools in major projects, then explain/defend the techniques used in-group and single project critiques. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the developments in art and design through a consideration of the relationships between history and technology. *Students will begin by designing by hand then slowly integrate contemporary technology in to creating finish products. We will also study historical motifs of design and how design reflects on the time and mindset of the society it is presented in. Students will demonstrate the ability to recognize major cultural styles and forms of art, design, and depict where their artistic/design style resonates. *Critiques on major and minor projects and essays will be a chance for students to reflect and explain how major styles and shifts in design contribute, influence, and inspire their own artistic style. 3 the Brazosport College Student Guide for more information. This is available online at ATTENDANCE: Attendance for this course will be on a percentage basis. COURSE REQUIEREMENTS AND GRADING POLICY: Your grade in the class is determined by the quality and effort put into the work in and outside of class. This work includes major drawings, attendance, sketchbooks, participation, and effort. Please note: Natural talent is not a substitute for a strong work ethic, however a strong work ethic can be convincing of natural talent. Every Major project grade will be discussed with the student on an individual basis to keep the student in the know about their academic standing in the class (There will be 4-5) Major project grades, depending on the pace of the class). You will be given the chance to re-work 2 major projects, to improve upon the first grade. *Re-working a project does not guarantee that the grade will improve. A 90% and up. B 80%-89% C 70%-79% D 60%-69% F 60% and below Excellent. Shows complete understanding of the project presented, and goes above and beyond what is expected. Above average commitment to the project. Better than what is expected of a beginning drawing student. However. Still has some issues concerning the elements of drawing. Average. Meets the bare minimum requirements of the project. Below Average in all aspects of the project and has major shortfalls which most likely is reflecting in all aspects of the class. Failing you will know before you reach this point. Therefore, you should have no reason to meet it. GRADING BREAKDOWN: 20% Projects: Essays, Quizzes, and Presentations. 30% In-Class Assignments: Attendance in class and work ethic while in class are considered. Portfolio reviews will happen twice in the semester: once at midterms and once at the end on the semester. KEEP ALL WORK until it has been reviewed at
4 these times. Lost work will result in lower grading, even if I have previously seen it in class. 30% Major Projects: More time intensive work (that helps build a solid portfolio) will be critiqued by the class upon completion. Students must be present for critiques. 20% Sketchbooks: Consider this your daily dose of drawing when you do not have class. It is expected that sketchbooks will work as a visual and written journal of your experiences outside and inside of class. They will consist of collage, writings, notes from class and drawings. Every Tuesday your sketchbook will be turned in for me to see its progress, and then returned on Thursday. I will have a sketchbook assignment every week. TESTING The major projects required in this class can be considered your tests. You will have in-class and out of class time to work on those projects. These major projects will have due dates that are non-negotiable, and critique grades cannot be made up. MAKE UP POLICY Make up work will be dealt with on an individual bases. Critiques and in-class minor projects however, cannot be made up. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITES: Students are responsible to participate in classroom discussions and to compose a sketchbook that consists of at least 50 pages (shoot for one or more creative work per day). Students are also expected to have mastery of the chosen medium by the end of the semester. SEMESTER TIME LINE: Week 1: Intro to course and gather supplies. Week 2: Cross contour drawing and color blocking demo. Week 3: Simple color blocking project, begin complex cross contour drawing, complex color blocking project demo Week 4: Finish complex color blocking project. Stencil Demo Week 5: Complete stencil project. Week 6: Begin master copy collage Week 7: Complete master copy collage, Digital editing collage demo Week 8: Digital editing Week 9: Digital editing and collage trade (time permitting)
5 Week 10: Intro story/narrative project, find narrative. Week 11: Continue work on narrative project. Week 12: Narrative project due. Intro Bad Advertisement Project Week 13: Continue work on Bad Advertisement Project Break Week 14: Complete all remaining work, opportunity for re-works.
