1 Educational Services Course of Study Information Page Course Title: Desktop Publishing (Course #469) Rationale: A continuum of courses, including advanced classes in computer technology is needed. At Union Mine High School, the 4x4 schedule creates an immediate need for additional elective options. This course provides the opportunity for students to increase their desktop publishing skills through a yearlong (one term) course. In addition, this course offers students the opportunity to explore desktop publishing as a possible career option. Course Description: This course takes students beyond the fundamentals of desktop publishing introduced in previous computer technology courses. Students will work with a variety of desktop publishing applications and learn how to create professional quality print and web ready publications for business and the consumer. Emphasis will also be placed on exploring desktop publishing certification and career opportunities. 2 Educational Services STANDARDS The currently adopted District Technology Standards support this course (see El Dorado County Technology Competencies - Grades 9-12). In addition, the National Technology Standards due on December 1, 1999, from ISTE also support this type of course (see Foundation Standards 3, 4, and 5). Further, the District s Strategic Plan supports the integration of School-to-Career components within courses of study (see Focus Group - School-to-Career). Finally, most colleges and universities support substantial preparation in the area of computer technology for their entering students. 4 Department: Business Course Title: Desktop Publishing UNIT #1: GOAL: Introduction to Desktop Publishing. Students will be introduced to the concept of desktop publishing, key terminology, compare word processing application features to desktop publishing application features, and explore the history of desktop publishing. OBJECTIVES Explore the varied definitions of desktop publishing. Understanding key terminology. Compare and contrast the features of word processing applications and desktop publishing applications. Explore the history of desktop publishing. students will search for definitions of desktop publishing and current articles discussing the topic, and include a summary of their findings in an interactive notebook. Students will create and regularly update an interactive notebook of terms related to desktop publishing. Students will create a retrieval chart that compares and contrasts the features of word processing and desktop publishing applications. the student will create a short summary and time line for the development of desktop publishing. 5 Department: Business Course Title: Desktop Publishing UNIT #2: GOAL: Introduction to the Desktop Publishing Process and the Creation of a Simple Project. Students will be introduced to the process of desktop publishing. OBJECTIVES Explore the types of software applications page layout and photo editing/graphics used in desktop publishing, including professional applications, as well as freeware and shareware. Explore the types of desktop publishing documents. Explore design principles for non-designers. Explore basic document set-up and the impact on printing. Explore the concepts of theme and style as it relates to desktop publishing. Explore the clip art collections of desktop publishing applications and those available on the Internet. Explore the process for modifying clip art. Using Internet resources and several desktop publishing applications, students will determine the category and primary use for each application and record their findings to share with the class during a discussion. Students will create and regularly update an interactive notebook of desktop publishing projects that are categorized according to: intended audience, purpose, and limitations on production. Students will read Chapters 1-6 of The Non-Designers Design Book and complete the exercises and quizzes. Students will open a variety of desktop publishing applications and determine the set-up options and record their findings on a retrieval chart. Students will draft a design of a simple greeting card and determine the theme for the card, ie., birthday, holiday, etc. Students will explore a variety of desktop publishing applications and Internet clip art collections and determine those graphics that best fit their greeting card theme and style. Students will practice resizing, re-coloring, and enhancing their chosen clip art images and then incorporate their final draft into their greeting card. 6 OBJECTIVES Explore designing with type for non-designers. Explore typical desktop publishing font collections. Explore the concept of balance as it relates to page layout. Students will read Chapters 7-13 of The Non-Designers Design Book and complete the exercises and quizzes. Students will explore a variety of desktop publishing application font collections and determine those fonts that best fit their greeting card theme and style. Students will explore the non-printing horizontal and vertical guidelines of a variety of desktop publishing applications. Students will explore the impact of balance by dividing their greeting card page into distinct areas and reposition their text and graphics within those areas. Students will determine the best layout for their greeting card based on their theme, style, and the concept of balanced page layout. Explore the effective use of frames, boxes, and borders. Students will explore the great variety of options for using frames, boxes, and borders by visiting selected web sites and evaluating the effectiveness of their use. Students will evaluate the effective use of frames, boxes, and borders and incorporate those aspects that enhance their greeting card. Explore various peripheral devices (hardware) that enhance desktop publications. Students will scan images, use the digital camera, video camera, and photocopy machine to create images and text. Students will use the scanner, digital camera, video camera, and photocopy machine to add features to their greeting card. Explore the impact of such non-computer techniques as cut and paste, paste-up, etc. Students will create the various aspects of their greeting card on separate pieces of paper and then use cut and paste techniques to create an effective design. 7 OBJECTIVES Explore the use of placeholders during the layout process. Students will use the software applications available in the classroom and Internet resources to visit web sites that contain copyfitting text files and download appropriate samples for their greeting card. Students will explore various templates and determine the uses for placeholders. Understand the concept of copyright as it relates to desktop publishing. Students will examine a variety of desktop publishing products and determine the copyright/author. Students will create a logo or signature graphic for their greeting card. 8 Department: Business Course Title: Desktop Publishing UNIT #3: GOAL: Introduction to the Desktop Publishing Publication. Students will be introduced to the publication process as it relates to desktop publishing. OBJECTIVES Explore the types of templates and wizards found in desktop publishing applications. Using several desktop publishing applications, students will determine the templates and wizards available in each application. Students will select several templates and analyze them for: layout, font use, graphics, balance, and record their findings in their interactive notebook. Explore the impact of paper (type) on a desktop publishing product. Students examine a variety of desktop publishing products and determine the type of paper used in the project. Students will select a template project and print the project on a variety of paper and evaluate the impact of paper choice. Using Internet and print media resources, students will explore the variety of paper products available for desktop publishing and create a retrieval chart that details the best type of paper and source for several different types of desktop publishing projects. Explore the requirements of commercial printing establishments. Students will choose a sample project and take it to a printer to determine the pre-press requirements for that type of desktop publishing project and orally present their findings. Students will be introduced to career opportunities in the desktop publishing. OBJECTIVES Explore the types of employment opportunities in the desktop publishing field. students will determine the types of jobs and their descriptions available in the desktop publishing field. students will determine the outlook for careers in the desktop publishing field. Students will visit a local desktop publishing concern and interview an employee whose primary job is in the desktop publishing field. Explore the option of self-employment in the desktop publishing field. Using the Internet and print media, students will generate resources for copyrighting assistance. Using Internet and print media resources, students will explore the pros and cons of creating a web site for a desktop publishing business. Students will explore the process of choosing a name and registering their business. Students will explore the financial requirements for establishing a desktop publishing business, including income and sales tax requirements. Using Internet resources, students will explore the options for finding and working with clients and printers and create a resource list for a desktop publishing business. Students will create a business or select a local business and design and publish several of the following products: business cards, resumes, brochures, display ads, logos, newsletters, bookmarks, calendars, stationary, and a basic web page.
