2 General Information Summer programs will be held at: Blue Valley Southwest High School Quivira Road Overland Park, KS Registration Information: Registration for summer programs begins on March 9, 2015 at 8:00 a.m. Registration for traditional classroom courses will close on April 8, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. For additional information about these courses please contact Registration for virtual/online courses will close on April 8, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. Registrations may be taken after this date only as space is available. Registration is not complete until payment is received; students with outstanding fees may be removed from class rosters beginning on May 4, 2015 at 8:00 a.m. All courses are contingent on the minimum enrollment and availability of staffing. Students enrolled in a traditional classroom course will be dropped from the roster after two (2) missed classes. Any refunds or registration changes after the registration deadline will result in a $ administrative fee. Students enrolled in a virtual course, who drop a summer school course after 5:00 p.m. on Monday, June 8, 2015, will not receive a fee reimbursement. 3 High School Classes - Traditional Design Fundamentals Driver Education Course #: AR0100S Prerequisite: None Dates: 6/1/15-6/23/15 Room: TBD Times: M-Th 7:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Design Fundamentals serves as a general introduction to all aspects of the visual arts, giving students exposure to a variety of studio disciplines, theory of aesthetics, art history and art criticism. Course #: DE1402AS Prerequisite: Kansas Instruction Permit Age Requirements: Student must th have completed 8 grade. Dates: 6/2/15-6/17/15 Room: TBD Times: M-Th 9:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. Fee: $ Dates and times noted above are for classroom instruction. Driving time is scheduled on an individual basis and is separate from classroom instruction. Students may receive up to six driving lessons, depending on their demonstrated driving skills; each student will receive a minimum of four driving lessons. Driving will be completed by August 1, Students enrolled in credit courses must maintain regular attendance. Students must successfully complete both portions of the course. Daily attendance is mandatory; it is important for students to maintain regular attendance in order to meet course competencies. Please note that any morning or full-day summer camps scheduled during June present possible conflicts for the summer session of Drivers Education. Please consider your ability to commit to the full class schedule before registering for the class. In the event that a student requires additional driving or classroom instruction, or time to complete the course, an additional fee of $ will be charged to cover this instruction. The instruction will take place during the next available session of driver education. 4 High School Classes Online/Virtual All online courses are available through Blackboard. Students may access the virtual courses from any location with internet access. Electronic communication with the instructor and classmates is a key component to online courses. Students will participate in online discussions and communicate with the instructor through Blackboard and the Blue Valley student system. Most resources (i.e., textbooks and handouts) are provided in an electronic format and are available in Blackboard. If a student requires an actual textbook, he/she can check out the book from District Office. *Textbooks are limited in availability; students are strongly encouraged to utilize the webbased materials. Online students are required to complete assignments in a variety of formats. The student will be required to complete all online assignments within the summer school session (June 1, 2015 through July 31, 2015). The virtual courses are designed to allow students to work at their own pace. Each course contains suggested pacing guidelines to help keep students on track for completion. Each virtual student is required to attend During the orientation session, students will receive instructions, materials and other relevant information. Orientations will be held at Blue Valley Southwest (17600 Quivira Rd, Overland Park, KS 66062). Summer semester is a compacted semester (8 weeks) and contains the same curriculum and requirements as the fall and spring semesters. Students are required to complete assignments each week. Any student who will not have access to a computer/internet for more than 2-3 days during the summer semester is encouraged not to enroll in a virtual education course. 5 High School Classes Virtual/Online American Government Course #: SS1208OS Dates: 6/1/15 7/31/15 Grade: 12 * This course fulfills the graduation requirement. Students study citizenship and the working of our system of government. Emphasis is placed on rights, responsibilities, and privileges of citizenship, the development of the U.S. Constitution, the operation of the government, contemporary politics, and current affairs. Business Essentials Course #: BC0234OS Dates: 6/1/15 7/31/15 Grade: 9, 10 This course gives a broad background and contemporary view of business topics and careers. The student explores business economic concepts and the interrelationship of finance, accounting, management, and marketing. Computer Applications Course #: BC0270OS Dates: 6/1/15 7/31/15 Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 *This course fulfills 1/2 of the computer technology graduation requirement. This course offers students a thorough knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, , web integration, database and presentations and is recommended for the student with proficient keyboarding skills using the touch method. 6 Driver Education Course #: DE1402OS Prerequisite: Kansas Instruction Permit Age Requirements: Student must have completed the 8 th grade. Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 Dates: June 1-18, 2015 Credit: 1/4 Pass or Fail Fee: $ The classroom phase of the course will be taken in an online format. The course involves lectures, discussions, and tests over basic principles of car control, turns, parking, the driver s physical and psychological factors in driving, Kansas driving laws and natural laws affecting driving emergency procedures. Students must obtain an instruction permit prior to the first day of the course. Students will be required to log driving time with a licensed Driver Education instructor. Students must pass all online assignments and assessments with an 80% or better in order to pass the course. Driving must be completed by August 1, Emerging Technologies Course #: BC0456OS Dates: 6/1/15 7/31/15 Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 *This course fulfills 1/2 of the computer technology graduation requirement. This project-based course will focus on the use of emerging technologies as tools for learning. This is a dynamic course with content that is updated frequently to reflect new technologies that students will be expected to use within the full range of classes taken during their high school program of study. Therefore this class is recommended for 9th and 10 th graders. Students will employ college readiness skills and technology literacies and apply these skill sets in assignments for other courses. Students will also be introduced to the tools, processes, and self-management skills required for online classes. Health & Wellness Course #: HE0098OS Dates: 6/1/15 7/31/15 Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 This course is designed to meet the general informational and educational needs of students in the areas of health issues and wellness. Students will gain practical information to support healthy, life-long decision-making. Subject matter includes nutrition, prevention and control of disease, injury prevention and safety, personal health and wellness, mental and emotional health, substance abuse, abuse and misuse, family life and sexuality, consumer and community health. 7 History of the Western World Course #: SS1300AS Grade: 10, 11, 12 Students study modern western civilizations, primarily European, dating from the Renaissance to the present. Emphasis is placed on the use of important concepts from political science, economics, geography and sociology. Students demonstrate knowledge of the development of the modern western world and apply their knowledge to understand current world affairs. Personal Finance Physical Education Course #: BC0204OS Dates: 6/1/15 7/31/15 Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 Course #: PE1000OS (1st Semester) Course #: PE1001OS (2nd Semester) Dates: 6/1/15 7/31/15 Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 *This course meets 1/2 the graduation requirement. This course is designed to cover the important skills in personal finance that every person should have before leaving high school. Course content includes basic business decisions such as getting and keeping a job, employee pay and benefits, checking accounts, banking services, income tax, investing, insurance, credit, consumer protection, consumer decision-making, and an introduction to economics. This course is directed toward developing and improving physical fitness knowledge and ability, knowledge of rules and interest in physical activities with individual and small group sports. Students will be required to complete both online assignments as well as logging fitness hours using a heart rate monitor. During the summer semester, students will be required to complete and document 10 hours per week of physical exercise. Organized sports or activities will not be counted towards the exercise requirements. 8 U.S. History: Understanding the Contemporary United States Since 1865 Course #: SS1230AS Dates: 6/1/15 7/31/15 Grade: 11 *This course meets 1/2 of the graduation requirements. Students will begin this course studying the foundational themes in our nation s creation, i.e., creation of government, federalism, rule of law, etc. The emphasis of this beginning unit will be how these foundational themes defined the nation in This prerequisite knowledge is a necessity to understanding the contemporary United States and will be used as a building block from which to study all future events. 9 High School Classes Credit Recovery/Online CR - Biology Course #: Semester 1 - SC1100AS Course #: Semester 2 - SC1101AS Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 *This course fulfills the graduation requirement for one Biological Science. Biology is the study of all living things and how they interact with their environment. This introductory course is designed for students who desire a general overview of biology including the survey of plants, animals, human beings, ecology and genetics. CR - English Language Arts 9 Course #: Semester 1 - EL0300AS Course #: Semester 2 - EL0301AS Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 English Language Arts 9 is a skillbased course, focusing on themes of identity and the individual s journey as a hero. The curriculum contains a balance of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing skills. For comprehension and pleasure, students read novels, plays, short stories, poetry and non-fiction. Students write narratives, poetry, and exposition. The class includes the study of literary terms, vocabulary and conventions, as well as the application of research skills. To enhance comprehension and pleasure in the sophomore year, students read challenging novels, plays, short stories, poetry, and non-fiction. Students analyze literature and poetry through expository, persuasive, and narrative writing techniques. 10 High School Classes Credit Recovery/Online CR - English Language Arts 11 Course #: Semester 1 - EL0308AS Course #: Semester 2 - EL0309AS Grade: 11, 12 English Language Arts 11explores the ongoing struggle between the needs of the individual and of an ever-changing society in America. Students interpret and analyze works by various American authors. Through reader response, essay, technical writing, and a research project, students begin to further develop personal styles of writing. Students will also continue to focus on critical thinking within the contexts of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing. CR - Contemporary Communications Course #: Semester 1 - CA0324AS Course #: Semester 2 - CA0325AS Grade: 12 Contemporary Communications is a year-long course that will focus on collegiate-level and corporatelevel communication skills through a technologically innovative, fastpaced, advance course of study. Students will develop abilities in technical reading and writing, oral presentation, desktop publishing, researching, and reading contemporary and classical fiction and nonfiction. CR - Algebra I Course #: Semester 1 - MA0806AS Course #: Semester 2 - MA0807AS Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 Students will master algebraic skills essential for the study of higher mathematics. This course is designed to bring together past experiences in algebraic concepts and extend these experiences through the real number system. 11 High School Classes Credit Recovery/Online CR - Algebra II Course #: Semester 1 - MA0814AS Course #: Semester 2 - MA0815AS Grade: 10, 11, 12 Students continue the study of the real number system with an introduction to the complex number system. This course allows the student to develop a mastery of algebraic techniques and a thorough knowledge of elementary functions and the graphs of these functions. Topics studied include properties of the real number system; polynomial and exponential functions, applications of geometry, probability and statistics and conic sections. CR - Geometry Course #: Semester 1 - MA0810AS Course #: Semester 2 - MA0811AS Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 Students are provided the opportunity to extend knowledge in algebraic concepts through the study of geometric relationships. Students communicate mathematical ideas and geometric arguments by a variety of means including 2-column proofs, flowcharts, paragraphs and indirect arguments. Topics include transformations, congruence, linear and quadratic equations, right triangular trigonometry, the basic ideas of coordinate geometry, direct and indirect proofs, and applications of formulas, ratio and proportion, statistics and probability. 13 High School Classes Frequently Asked Questions: Traditional Classes Q: Will my student need any supplies? A: Students enrolled in Driver Education are not required to purchase supplies. Q: Does my student need to have an Instruction Permit in order to take the class? A: All students enrolling in the Driver Education program need to have a valid Instruction Permit prior to the first day of class. If your student already has a valid Instruction Permit, make sure that it will not expire during the driving phase of the program. A student will not be allowed to drive in the vehicle without a valid Instruction Permit. Q: Where can my student get an Instruction Permit? A: The Instruction Permit is issued by the Division of Vehicles. The closest office in our area is located at the Great Mall of the Great Plains (intersection of 151st Street and I-35). Q: Where can my student drive with an Instruction Permit? A: The Kansas Highway Patrol web site has information about the Instruction Permit requirements and conditions at the following link: Q: On a Restricted License, is my student allowed to drive to school activities/practices or religious activities? A: Students are allowed to drive to school and home. If the activity/practice is on the grounds of the school the student attends then he/she may drive to and from the activity/ practice. For example: If a student attends Blue Valley Southwest and is playing soccer for BVSW, he/she may drive to and from any practices/games relating to his/her participation as long as the activity/practice takes place on BVSW school property. He/she cannot drive to a practice/activity that is not located on BVSW property (the school they attend). Another example: A student attends Blue Valley High and is on the golf team. All practices and events take place off of BVH property. This student cannot drive their vehicle to the practice site. A student cannot drive to religious activities on a Restricted License unless an adult driver is in the vehicle with him/her. Q: What is a Less Restricted License? A: Students who are 16 years old but less than 17 who have held an Instruction Permit for one full year and completed 50 supervised driving hours are able to drive with fewer limitations. Q: What is the minimum age for a Full License? A: Students are no longer subject to restrictions when they are 17 years old. Q: How many students are in the Driver Education class? A: The number of Driver Education classes is dependent on enrollment and availability of staffing; each has a limit of 25 students per class. A: Summer Design Fundamentals classes are rigorous and require daily attendance. Each day is equivalent to one week of art class during the school year; missing a single day will likely result in a lower grade. Q: Can my student make up a missed class or turn in a late assignment? A: No, Design Fundamentals is a studio class/program where all work must be completed during class and all of the assignments must be turned in by the second-to-last day of class for Portfolio grading. Q: How is the class graded? A: Design Fundamentals is taken for 0.5 credit of Fine Arts and is graded on the four point system (A=4 points; B=3 points; C=2 points; D=1 point; F=0 points). 16 High School Classes Frequently Asked Questions: Virtual/Online Classes Q: What are the requirements to enroll in a virtual education course? A: Students must have access to a computer with internet access. Students are required to have the full version of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Access and Excel) if they are enrolled in the Computer Applications course. Students enrolled in other virtual courses must have a word processing program available to them. For a specific list of technology requirements visit Q: Can my family take a vacation during the summer programs? A: Although virtual courses have a flexible schedule, students are required to complete coursework within a specific timeframe. It is highly recommended that students who will miss more than one week of instruction NOT enroll in a summer course due to the compacted semester. *The summer semester is less than 8 weeks and students are required to complete the same curriculum as during a typical semester. Q: How much time should I plan for my virtual coursework? A: Each virtual class requires approximately 8-10 hours per week. Students are required to complete assignments, readings, quizzes and online discussion forums. Q: The classes are full. Can my student be added to a wait list? A: The Summer Programs do have wait lists. The wait list criteria are based on content, facility, equipment and teacher availability. For additional information about the wait lists, contact High School Credit Recovery Classes Credit recovery students are required to attend a weekly meeting with their instructor. The dates and times of these meetings will be distributed during the course orientations. Credit recovery courses are available ONLY to students who have previously failed a course. Students should enroll in the corresponding course in which they previously failed (semester 1 = fall, semester 2 = spring). Student transcripts will reflect both courses (traditional course and the credit recovery course). Students who need to complete 2 or more credit recovery courses are strongly encouraged to enroll and pay for one course at a time. *Students who complete the first credit recovery course early (before July 1, 2015) can enroll, pay and complete a second credit recovery course. 17 Student Course Request Enrollment Directions 1. Please navigate to to begin entering your course request. 2. Enter your district username and password to access your account (ParentVue/StudentVue). 3. Select Course Request from the HOME screen. The Home Screen is where you can see current events from your school; access the School Calendar, Course History, Course Request, Grades, etc. 4. To begin selecting your course offerings, please select Click here to change course requests 5. You are now ready to start searching for course options. Enter the Course ID and click Search Courses You may also search by Department or Course Title.

18 Student Course Request Enrollment Directions 6. A list of courses containing the course title will appear. You are now ready to make your selection. After making your selections, please select Click here to move selected request to Selected Course Requests To see the course description, just click on the triangle to the left of the course title. *This example shows the student requesting Emerging Technologies as a course and Entrepreneurship as an alternate. 7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 until you have entered your desired summer course request. ***Do not use the Back button in your browser, please use the buttons within the program. 8. You should now be back on the Selected Course Request screen and see your course selections, please verify that you have selected the summer courses you wish to take during the summer term. 9. You are now ready to select Lock Course Request which will lock in your choices. 10. You should now see the message that your Course requests are locked in. 11. Select Close in the upper-right corner. Thank you for participating in the Online Course Request process. Fee Payment System will open on Monday, April 13, Now that you have completed the summer enrollment process, please wait until Monday, April 13th before proceeding to the fee payment section of ParentVue to finalize your child's enrollment in the Blue Valley Summer Program. (Fees do not generate until the summer schedule is simulated in our student information system.) Payment must be received by Friday, May 1st. Any course that is canceled because of low enrollment and/or staffing will trigger an automatic refund of your payment.
