1 Online Course Options- Summer School, 2014 Students will have an opportunity to take courses online during the summer but will be required to pay a higher cost than the face to face courses offered through Alexandria City Public Schools. 1.0 credit courses: $400 Please note: a free and reduced fee of $60 has been established for students taking Economics and Personal Finance Only. All other original credit courses will remain at $ elective credit courses: $200 The online courses being offered are for students who have not taken the class previously (original credit). If the student has taken the course previously and did not earn a passing grade, they are expected to attend summer school face to face to make up the credit. Students can begin their online courses starting in June when summer school registration begins and the end date is August 18, 2014 (for underclassmen). This is a firm end date. While students can finish earlier, students will NOT be extended beyond the 8/18 date. In fairness to both students, teachers, and counselors, students need to have the course work completed in order to be properly prepared for their upcoming Fall, 2014 courses and counselors need time to make sure the courses are part of student transcripts and make any necessary schedule changes for the fall as a result of successful completion. Any senior that is taking an online summer school course will be have an end date of August 1 st in order to participate in the August graduation. Upon registration and payment, students will be required to participate in an orientation session to be educated in online course navigation and resources available to them before they can begin work. There will be orientation sessions weekly throughout June. Orientation Sessions will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:45-4:30 PM in B234 at TC Williams High School King Street Campus. June 4 th June 11 th June 16 th June 18 th Students taking courses for original credit online will be expected to work independently without a face to face requirement at the school. However, there will be weekly support sessions held by the online learning mentor assigned to support an understanding of course navigation, expectations, and pacing. That mentor will also be available for regular

2 calls and s. Students will also have an online teacher assigned to them within their course. Their teacher is also available to meet virtually on a regular basis throughout the summer. Students who need access to a computer for online course work will have the opportunity to note that on their registration form and laptops will be distributed on Tuesday, July 1 st between 10:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. at the King Street Campus student helpdesk. Computers cannot be issued prior to that time due to their usage in testing, etc. Any high school student who has been issued a computer for the school year and is registered for a summer school online course will NOT TURN IN THEIR COMPUTER AT THE END OF THE YEAR. Instead, they will keep their student issued computer and return it to the student helpdesk at TC Williams King Street Campus upon completion of their summer school online course. Returning students will not be issued a new laptop/machine in the fall until they turn it in. Please note: diplomas will not be issued until the laptop is turned in as well. Please note: SPECIAL NOTE FOR STUDENTS REGISTERING FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION COURSES ONLINE THIS SUMMER: Students registering for 9th grade PE/Health Online: Students must register for both PE (.5 credit) and Health (.5 credit) courses. Using the registration link found in the information packet, click on the radio button in front of each course under "select" and then click "register" at the bottom of the page. These are listed in the packet as VA-PE 9-10 and VA-Health 10 Students registering for 10th grade PE Online: Students can register for 10th grade PE using the registration link found in the information packet. This is listed in the information packet as VA-PE 9-10 Please note: Due to Virginia legislation, this course does not include a Driver's Ed component. The only way a student can take Driver's Ed online is through the Virginia Department of Education. Students can take this independent of the online program if they choose. The link to access the course is here: The cost of the course is $109. Students taking SOL courses: Seniors: Seniors intending to graduate in August will take the SOL (if necessary) with the face to face group of students during the time allotted SOL testing timeframe. Information regarding SOL review opportunities as well as time, date, and location will be from the online learning mentor once dates have been finalized graders: These students taking SOL courses have two options. The first is to take the test during the time allotted SOL testing timeframe in late July/early August. The second is to take the SOL exam in September.

3 Please note: On average, original credit courses take 90 hours per semester, 180 hours to complete a 1.0 credit course. If a student begins a course on June 15 th, he or she would need to commit ~3-4 hours per day in order to complete the course by August 18 th. If a student does not complete a course in the time allotted, there will be no refund provided and students will earn failing grades on any remaining assignments. By registering for the course, students are making a commitment to put in the amount of time required for successful completion. Students have 10 days after their orientation session attendance in which to drop the course and receive a refund. 5 Online Course Registration Guide-Summer 2014 Step 1: Click on the ACPS Online Course registration link. Step 2: If prompted, then select your school from the drop-down list. Step 3: Select courses. Select the course or courses in which the student needs to be enrolled by filtering or searching and checking the appropriate box. Please NOTE: You are able to view short course descriptions or prerequisites by clicking on the course. Step 4: Review the requests. 1. In the field marked "select counselor" students should select "counselor name not listed" from the dropdown menu 2. If the student is newly enrolled in ACPS and has not yet been issued a student id #, input the word "summer" into that field. Click Change Course to return to the course selection screen, or click Next if your selections are correct. Step 5: Submit course request. If the student already has an account, then simply use their username and password to log in. Students who are new to Edgenuity will need to create an account by completing the information requested and clicking save. (Only a portion of the required fields are shown below.) Students and parents will receive their log in credentials in a separate e- mail. Course requests are sent to school staff for review and approval. If approved, then students will be sent instructions for payment to the address provided. Once payment is received, students will be added to the course(s). Copyright Edgenuity Inc.

6 Payment: Once a student enrollment is approved by ACPS, the vendor (Edgenuity) will contact families to collect payment.
