2 MA Art and Design Practice (Spatial and Interior Design) At Bucks New University, you will join a creative and vibrant community, benefiting from an approach to teaching that prioritises the importance of hands-on experience. Our MA in Art and Design Practice gives you the opportunity for interdisciplinary study under an art or design route, whilst allowing you to focus on a particular area for your research. Spatial and interior design is a multifaceted discipline in which traditional and new technologies are being applied and adapted to form original spatial solutions and propositions. The increasing demand for complex spatial environments that can inform and communicate is creating new possibilities for graduates, educated across design disciplines, who are familiar with a diverse range of media and materials, as well as a strong individual design language. Postgraduate courses in spatial and interior design have traditionally focused on architecture, interiors and landscape. However, today the spatial arts are seen as including design for interactive and performative spaces. On our spatial and interior design specialism, opportunities to challenge, test and develop spatial concepts will be offered through multidisciplinary discussions and critique as well as exploration of representation through different media. Through theoretical and material based research, you will define and extend your design processes and thinking to create innovative experiences and spaces. The final self-initiated research project will require the development of the concept, design, realisation and documentation for a complex spatial environment. Is this course for me? We are looking for graduates of interior design, spatial design, performance design, or related areas who wish to develop their conceptual and practical approach to the subject. You may be a recent graduate, or have considerable experience in interior and spatial design, looking to enhance your art or design practice. Specialist course team Our tutors have specialist expertise and active practices across landscape, architecture, interiors, exhibition design and curation. 3 Course content Personal Project 1 On this module you will test and explore initial ideas for practical projects and routes for enquiry and research. This may be structured through a series of tutor initiated design situations. Alternatively, it may be queries where you are asked to identify particular issues and question potential methodologies for practice-based research. Material Creativity This module encourages you to broaden your creative thinking and material knowledge across a range of disciplines from the handmade to digital manufacture. Whilst developing your subject specific expertise, you will be able to work with new materials and within other discipline areas. This will help further your experience, develop a more holistic understanding of your own practice and enhance your future employment prospects. You will have access to a range of workshops and be able to broaden your skills through experimenting and material testing, as well as practical and conceptual research. Art and Design Research Methods This module introduces you to issues that underpin research approaches in design and the creative arts. It will explore what we mean by research methods, such as qualitative and quantitative methods appropriate for practice-based subjects as well as the ethical issues related to undertaking research. In addition you will be introduced to project management processes and techniques to enable you to design research projects at master s level and to understand the legal issues associated with creative projects such as intellectual property rights (IPR) and public liability. Personal Project 2 This module requires you to consolidate your research ideas through the ongoing practical and theoretical investigation of your practice in art or design. Building on initial experimental enquiries in stage one, it will require a more in depth study of a technical, theoretical and conceptual nature depending on the research questions being refined. Visual and Material Cultures (VMC) Thesis This module enables you to identify key issues related to your developing practice, to examine them, and place them into cultural, social, political, critical, technical or commercial contexts. It also provides an opportunity for you to identify relevant research sources, and to use appropriate analytical tools. You can achieve this by preparing a proposal, a first draft and then a final VMC thesis. Personal Project 3 During the final study period you work exclusively on the realisation and resolution of your personal projects. You will build on, and refine, ideas and research approaches developed in stages one and two, including the VMC thesis, culminating in an exhibition of work and a viva voce. This body of work represents the conclusion of individual conceptual, theoretical and practical work. As part of this module, you will engage with issues in your practice, such as sustainability, globalisation, social imperatives, changing demographics, political and economic contexts as well as the applications to design solutions and artists work

In addition to tutorials, seminars and lectures, you will benefit from guest speakers, group critiques and visits. There may also be opportunities to attend evening lectures, as well as go on study trips and take part in exhibitions and competitions. Entry requirements To apply for this course, you will be expected to hold a good undergraduate degree in a related field. Alternatively, those with experience in the area may also apply. In your application you will need to include a short research project proposal. All applicants are interviewed with a portfolio of previous work. For international students, these interviews may be held over Skype or telephone upon submission of your portfolio.
