Join IndyHumane; local celebrities including Brad Stevens, head coach of the Butler Bulldogs; Blue, the Butler mascot; 8,000 humans; and over 5,000 dogs as Mutt Strut kicks off the month of May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Now in its eighth year, the greatest spectacle in dog walking brings people from across the country and across Indiana to walk the famous 2 ½-mile oval. This year promises to be bigger and better than ever! We re expanding Party on the Plaza, producing an opening ceremony that will rival the Indianapolis 500 (or we ll get close, anyway), and struttin our stuff like never before!! 9 HUMANE SOCIETY OF INDIANAPOLIS OUR MISSION The Humane Society of Indianapolis is the leading voice for the welfare of animals and improving their quality of life. IndyHumane is the first choice in providing direct services for shelter cats and dogs, including adoption, foster home placement, behavior training, appropriate medical care, and affordable spay/neuter services. As the voice for the animals, IndyHumane brings together like-minded animal-focused individuals and groups to educate the public about animal welfare issues and concerns. OUR HISTORY Since 905, the Humane Society of Indianapolis (Indy- Humane) has provided shelter and care to animals in need on their way to loving homes. Originally started to help both animals and families in need, IndyHumane eventually switched to focus solely on animal care. In its current location at 79th and Michigan Road since the 960 s, IndyHumane s facility now spans over 32,000 square feet on 3.5 acres and provides love and shelter for more than 5,000 animals per year. In a caring and nurturing environment, the work of Indy- Humane deepens the bond between people and their companion animals. FUNDING The Humane Society of Indianapolis, an Indianapolisbased, independent, nonprofit 50(c)(3) organization that receives no government funding, is supported solely by contributions, grants, bequests, investments, and adoption and service fees from individuals, companies and foundations. Any donation, regardless of size, demonstrates a deep personal commitment to help care for the 5,000+ animals brought to our door each year. The Humane Society of Indianapolis is independent from the Humane Society of the United States and receives no funding nor is managed by HSUS or any other local/ state animal welfare agency. 8

It costs between $400 and $600 to care for each homeless animal s stay at IndyHumane. IndyHumane took in more than 5,000 animals in At any one time there may be up to 325 animals being cared for by IndyHumane; not including the hundreds of animals in foster care outside the shelter. IndyHumane works with other local animal welfare organizations, including the city shelter (ACC), Indy Feral, Indy Pit Crew, etc, to care for and adopt out as many animals as possible. In 2008, Marion County shelters euthanized more than 2,000 animals due to a lack of funding and space. IndyHumane is independent and local. We receive no United Way, HSUS or government funding.
