2 Cook the World! (Kenny MacKay) If you love to cook and experiment with new flavours then join Kenny MacKay on his tour of world food. Over the course of eight weeks, Kenny will take you through a myriad of interesting dishes, help you to understand the flavours of different cuisines and learn how to cook fresh local produce in exciting new ways. You will create dishes such as Vietnamese spring rolls, Mexican beef empanadas and Spanish orange and almond tart. The course is tailored to suit all levels of cooking, so whether you are a beginner or a bit more advanced there will be something for everyone. Recipes for all dishes will be provided and the food can be enjoyed together at the end of the class or taken away. Kenny has recently moved to Lewis from Glasgow where he worked at some of the city s best restaurants including the Ubiquitous Chip and the award winning Stravaigin. Here he was head chef for over 3 years and this, combined with his love of travel have given him the opportunity to experience many different types of food and help fuel his passion for cooking. Tuesday pm /9/2015 Introduction to Counselling (Donnie MacDonald) This course has been designed for students who have no previous experience of counselling. Students will be introduced to the purpose and basic concepts and processes of counselling, including reflective practice. As an introductory course it provides underpinning and basic knowledge of the subject. It does not however permit those who have achieved it to refer to themselves as qualified counsellors. Students will be enrolled on the SQA unit Counselling : An Introduction. Assessment for this will be via written work and a role play activity.
3 Tuesday //2015 Investigating Archaeology (Dr Mary MacLeod) This Unit introduces candidates to archaeology by looking at archaeological sites and finds, research methods, and sources of archaeological information. On completion candidates will have a basic understanding of archaeology and the responsibilities under the law in relation to archaeological sites. It will provide useful underpinning knowledge and skills for progression to further study in this area. This Unit is suitable for candidates with no previous archaeological experience but who have an interest in history and/or archaeology. Tuesday pm 50 29/9/2015
4 Machining Metal Lathe work (James Macleod) An introduction to metal turning using a centre lathe. Produce turned components to given tolerances using various methods. Understand how to accurately measure turned dimensions using a range of measuring instruments. Tuesday pm /9/2015 Equipment required Boiler suit & safety boots are required VHF Radio Course (Iain Angus Macaulay) The RYA SRC radio operator qualification authorises the holder to operate a short range marine VHF radio with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on a vessel and is a legal requirement for marine VHF users throughout the world. 5 Welding Skills (Roddy Ferguson) General manual metal arc welding practice on mild steel plate from 3-mm, various joint designs and MIG/MAG welding practice. Individual requirements can be catered for. Wednesday pm /09/2015 Hairdressing skills (Kareen Morrison) This is a practical course aimed at students that have no hairdressing experience and would like to build basic skills. It would suit anyone working in the care sector to develop abilities or anyone who would like to improve skills for personal use. Each week a different area would be covered and students should be aware that some sessions will require willing models for practice under supervision. This is a SQA unit. Content Basic hairdressing skills: Shampooing, head massage, blow-drying, styling, setting, perm winding, colour application, long hair design, gents clipper cutting & shaving. Wednesday pm //2015
6 ARTISTIC DESIGN IN HAIR COLOURING (Elspeth Robertson) This is a Level 6 SQA unit that will help hairdressers to develop artistic colouring techniques which reflect the emerging trends within the ever evolving hairdressing industry. I.T skills will be required for completion of a folio and investigatory piece of work for assessment. By undertaking this unit it will also contribute to CPD. On completion of the course a folio of work will have been completed to showcase the work undertaken. Tuesday pm //2015 Introduction to Theology (Rev I.D Campbell) This class will look at the major themes of Systematic Theology and introduce the participants to source material on each of the topics. A major part of the work will be discussion of writings from some of the key theologians of both the past and present. Suitable for anyone interested in exploring the key issues of theology. 7 Computers for All (Derek MacLean) Computers for All will show you how to do the following safely in an informal easy way: How to use the internet safely How to send an e mail How to use Skype How to book tickets online How to get pictures from your camera onto your computer (An SQA certificate on Internet safety will be awarded for successful completion of the Internet Safety Element)C Monday pm /09/2015 ipad and iphone The Basics (Derek MacLean) Using ipad and iphone will show you how to use iphones or ipads safely in an informal easy way. 8 ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) (George Banks) The range of BCS (British Computer Society) subjects at Level 1 provides individuals with the opportunity to gain basic knowledge and skills in Word Processing, Databases, Spreadsheets and PowerPoint. ECDL and ECDL Advances allows those with existing skills to develop further. Flexible 25 per unit various start dates throughout the year Interior Design for Beginners (Kate MacDonald) Ever thought of doing something with that spare room? Got a creative streak but afraid of making expensive decorating mistakes? Then this could be the class for you! It will be low- tech, laid- back and fun but be prepared to start seeing everything in a new light! During this ten week course you will discover the fundamental principles of interior design and learn how to develop your own personal style and be inspired to use colour with confidence. You will have the opportunity to share and develop ideas using mood boards and find out how to inject life into any room, be it classic or contemporary. Tuesday pm 50 29/09/2015
9 Woodworking Skills (Donald Duncan MacIver) Come and be creative! Make a name plaque for your home, funky picture frames, planters, clock surrounds, wherever your imagination takes you in ten weeks! Wednesday pm 70 22/09/2015 Simple Furniture Making (Russell Crawford) A practical course exploring wood and joining methods used. Learn and develop the skill necessary to make simple furniture and finish it to a high standard. Alternatively, take along a favourite piece that has seen better days and repair it. Tuesday /09/2015
10 Ùlpan Gaelic for Beginners (A Murray and D J Cunningham) The fast and effective way to learn Gaelic! Ùlpan targets conversation reinforced with reading and writing. Students learn through the repetition of key structures and through speaking and understanding. The emphasis is on use! Students will be given the opportunity to work towards SQA accreditation. Tuesday and Wednesday Free 15/09/2015 CMI (Chartered Management Institute) (Billy Mackinnon) This qualification provides an introduction to the Chartered Management Institute s Level 3 Certificate in Management. This introductory certificate is intended for people who are considering a move into a first line management role or those who are new to such a role. Tuesday pm //2015
11 RYA Day Skipper Theory (Ken Kennedy) On completion of this theory course candidates can achieve RYA Day Skipper certification which proves they understand basic weather, navigation, berthing and anchoring procedures etc. Tuesday pm //2015 Electronics (Dr Chris Macleod) Course on analogue and digital electronics. Learn about the operation and design of basic circuits like amplifiers, radios and power supplies. Suitable for hobbyists, prospective radio amateurs or as a taster for people considering studying electronics at a higher level at college or university. Assumes a basic (high-school level) knowledge of algebra. Tuesday pm 60 29/09/2015 Introduction to Computer Networking (Alexander Peck) This course is suitable for candidates who have an interest in computer networks. This is a low entry practical course that will enable candidates to set-up a small computer network. Candidates will also be shown how to test and troubleshoot a small network installation. It will also provide candidates with information about the different types and features of networking components and the physical network topologies used in industry. Candidates will be made aware of the need for standards and protocols in computer networks.
12 Tuesday pm //2015 Web Design (George Banks) This course covers the skills and techniques needed to create your first website and is designed for novices who have always wanted to build a site but lack the skills or knowledge to do it. This course will help you to understand how a web page works. You will know how to create a hosting account and domain name for your website. You will know how to use a web editor to make your website. You will be able to create links and images for your website and publish your website online. Tuesday /09/2015 Upcycling (Catriona Murray) From shabby to chic! Want to breath new life into an old piece of furniture but don t have the know-how or confidence? Well why not come and learn with us! In this course we will be covering the basic techniques of furniture painting using chalk paint (no sanding or priming required!), paint distressing/ageing and waxing; an introduction to decoupage and basic upholstery where wanted. We will show you how to plan your project help you chose colours and finishes and give you the confidence to get started on your own project with us! You will learn to love rescuing and transforming unloved items.
